Day 3 - got sick on a plane :(

#1

Day 3…have been feeling pretty good. A little dizzy at times, slight headache. But overall doing well. Got to the gym first two days too.

Today: For breakfast I had two cups of coffee with cream. A couple of hours later I blended a shot of espresso. almond milk, 1 tsp coconut oil, scoop of collagen powder. Drank it on the way to the airport.

Had some water and hot tea on the plane. Was feeling fine. Then nausea hit hard and quick. Got to the restroom just in time. (Even got out of my seat with the seat belt sign illuminated! Such a maverick.)

Then I felt perfectly fine again.

What do you think that was about???

PS - The title of this post reminds me of the title of a Kenny Chesney song, that is a lot more fun than what happened to me.

There’s a reason they have the little bags in the pouch in front of every seat, you know. Maybe just airsickness?

LoL…I saw it there and felt bad for the people around me.

I’m on an airplane constantly! I don’t think airsickness was it.

Do you normally drink almond milk with coconut oil and collagen powder? Coconut oil can be hard on the stomach. Not sure about the collagen powder.

Coconut oil is normally hard on the other end of the digestive tract I believe. My guess would be you overloaded on liquid without enough sodium to balance it out. The dizziness also indicates this as the problem. Did you add any salt or Lite-Salt to any of these beverages? Or take any electrolyte tablets/mixers?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

I agree with Justin. The dizziness and headache are symptoms of a lack of sodium, which we excrete more readily when we stop loading up with carbohydrate. (It’s called the keto or Atkins “flu,” by the way.)

Try to get between 10 and 15 grams of table salt (NaCl) a day. The dietary recommendations for sodium published by most governments are inadequate, the U.S. recommendation woefully so.

Why are you not eating a real breakfast?

(Carl Keller) #8

I got light-headed once while doing keto. I increased my sodium and haven’t had the problem since.

#9

@Regina I was rushing to get out of the house. I thought the shake would tide me over. I’ve had 2 eggs cooked in bacon fat and spinach first two days.

Thanks everyone! I walked to the store tonight and bought pink Himalayan salt and Natural Calm. Hoping light-headedness will go away soon.

On a happy note, bought Ketone sticks and it is dark purple. That was quick!!!

@KristenK
I think the empty stomach with just coffee and some fat coupled with just starting keto 3 days in, rushing around to get out to the airport on time so you had to skip breakfast, and the bouncing around while taking off and flying just might have been a bad combination. I always have something before travel. It takes 3minutes to scramble a couple of eggs and if you fly then you should have some carry on food because keto can be hard in an airport or eating in flight meals. Or just have some hard boiled eggs in the fridge when you’re in a pinch for time.

But going long hours on just coffee drinks isn’t recommended. Too much caffeine can make you really jittery in ketosis. And it’s a diuretic too so you’re going to dehydrate as well. I think most all of us end up cutting back on caffeine because we don’t go up and down with our energy like the afternoon low energy carb burnout, coffee and snack break thing.
