Dates

Hello from Saudi Arabia …
I started a month ago, and it is very comfortable for me system and I felt his wounds in sleep and in digestion. My question about Dates is basic with our Arabic coffee on a daily in Saudi . I have not eaten it for a month :exploding_head:
Is there a problem with eating one piece a day? Thanks

I understand this issue well. My wife’s family is from Pakistan. My father-in-law lives with us, and he orders dates by the crate.

There are many different kinds of dates, but I would estimate that most “regular-sized” dates would be about 15g net carbs per date, and pretty much as fast-absorbing sugar. I would not consume a date while on a ketogenic diet, but perhaps somebody who is highly insulin sensitive can tolerate it.

As for that graphic, most of the claims are hyperbole or fiction.

The problem is I wouldn’t be able to stop at just one.

I was thinking of making the date nut bread a la Wheat Belly fame and looked up all the macros etc. by entering recipe into chronometer. One slice of 10 works out to 9.2 gross carbs with 3.5 fibres for less than 6 net carbs, which in my opinion is worth it.

noooo my friend I would not waste your precious carbs for the day on a small slice of unsatisfying date bread.
opt those 6 carbs for halloumi or a big salad or like an entire bar of 100% bakers chocolate

Might depend on your insulin response. Maybe do a few experiments. Try different times of day, exercise etc and see if there is an impact.

It is true that there are many types of dates and degrees of sugar in which there are also different stages of maturity as increased sugar in one pill (such as the difference between green bananas and yellow dotted with brown),

It is important to us as an interest we also offer to visitors on occasions and family visits

Thanks

Mostly we eat 1, 3, 5 or 7 dates, and some of them make it a core meal :ok_hand:t2:

Deglet Noor dates are less sweet - one date minus the fiber is 4.5 grams carbs. So, if you love dates in your food culture, up to 4 dates may be workable at times, provided you don’t eat lots of other carbs.

HOWEVER, if you have a deranged metabolism it’s a different matter. Dates are high sugar, Deglet Noors have 4.4 grams of delicious sugar each. So, slowing down the sugar arrival in the system by eating the dates with butter or cheese or coconut may be advisable.

Personally, I use about a half cup of chopped Deglet Noor dates to sweeten my large savory pot of kashmiri chicken, 6 servings.

That’s about 50grams divided by 6, so about 9 grams per serving along with a little more from onions/spices/yogurt/veg salad - so around 20 grams. Which is totally workable for an IF one-meal-a- day. Also, as I’m fat-adapted and able to stay in ketosis at a 50 gram daily intake of net carbs, it works as a second meal, etc.

Thought this was going to be a post looking for a Keto person to date, not about dates the food.

Thanks for the great information.

Can you please send me pictures.

What would be indication of a bad or good insulin response? What I’m asking is, if I were to test my insulin response, what kind of results would I be looking for? Thanks

(Ethan) #16

There aren’t really insulin response tests you can do at home. The best you can do is test glucose and ketones

Keep in mind a teaspoon of sugar has 4 carbs.

I think putting a couple into a large recipe can be ok. Eating straight I personally would not any more than I would eat date sugar or coconut sugar or cane sugar

Dates? Wow. Not low carb at all.
The ketogenic diet is high fat, moderate protein, and very low carb.
I’ve eaten the fresh fruit (not dried) dates in the past before keto. I do understand which ones you refer to.

As many have said, if you choose to continue to eat them, you may not remain in ketosis.
If you are metabolically deranged in any way, you may want to check your priorities.

No one is going to give you the green light to eat them on the ketogenic diet. You’ll have to do some n=1 testing to see if a small amount is a problem.

Basically you likely have a decision to make. Keep a carby food you love in your diet, or remain in ketosis with all it’s benefits. Probably you cannot have both.

You’re welcome~ Here’s what the box from the U.S. distributer called “Trader Joe’s” looks like, I chop them myself.

Due to the carbs, I don’t nibble much while chopping
