Counting carbs in veggies?

Hi everyone,

When using MFP, and inputting all of your food, do you completely disregard the carb content in vegetables? I’m eating broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, asparagus, and spinach and am unsure if I should be freaking out about the carbs in them.

Your opinion and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you count the carbs in everything, but make sure you subtract the fiber.

LoL :joy:

Don’t worry the veggies your eating have a net 2 carbs per cup you could eat 10 cups or 2lbs

My favorite is California Blend

Kale tends to be higher. I think its a good idea to track everything till you get to know by eyeballing.

I also like the Cali blend. I toss them in some olive oil, seasoning, and sprinkle some grated cheese on top and pop them in the oven for a few minutes. So yummy!

Guess what I’m having tonight

Is “Cali blend” frozen? Fresh? Where do I find it?

(Mike W.) #8

Brussels sprouts are about 1 carb per even after subtracting fiber, FYI.

(Dan Dan) #9

It’s both

Any store in California I’m cheap so I buy at 99cent store

(Trish) #10

Frozen typically. I buy a few bags whenever it’s on sale.

True. They’re not something I would sit and eat 20 of, though, even dripping with butter. An actual serving of them is probably closer to 5 or 6 of them, at least the way we eat them. And size does vary a bit.

#12

So you can go over in carbs by eating too big of a salad?

(Richard Hanson) #13

I try not to eat a lot of vegetables, no more than a cup or two each day and then only as an excuse to eat butter or cheese or bacon bits or olive oil or … all of the above. Roasted baby asparagus spears wrapped in bacon and smothered in a hollandaise sauce. That is my idea of a veggie. One spear per slice of bacon please.

Lettuce, radishes and cukes are low. Watch out for peppers, tomatoes and onions though.

I love vegetables and would not consider living without them, but because I want to keep insulin low I treat them with caution. It will take a while to get a handle on the carb count, but with a little practice it gets to be second nature.

I mostly agree, but I allow eating a lot of raw kale, chard, arugula, and spinach. Its VERY hard to get a lot of net carbs with these when they are raw.

I guess I’m just thinking more along the lines of a vegetables importance in removing toxins, and providing essential vitamins and nutrients. It seems as thought a lot of folks on the keto diet avoid veggies simply because of the carbs.

Some people have to keep carbs very low to see results. It’s an individual thing.

Wait, doesn’t the California Blend have carrots? Aren’t carrots just, like, sugar?

On a side note, it’s funny, because I never realized before going keto HOW GOOD tons of butter on veggies is. Like, we always buttered them a little as a kid (mostly in… I can’t believe its not butter…yuck!) but maybe its the Kerrygold I use now. I have switched, and oh man! So good. Creamy, and actually brings out the flavor MORE!

Edit:

Just to be clear, I wasn’t being obnoxious with the sugar question. Just making sure my understanding is correct.

Also, I stopped using I can’t believe its not butter a long time ago, but was still using “regular” sticks of butter. Started buying the kerrygold blocks and it has changed how much I love butter. the other stuff had no flavor.

1 medium sized carrot has 4.3 grams of net carbs. Just how many do you expect to eat in that California blend?

Maybe carrots are not the ideal choice of vegetable for a keto diet but there are a lot worse things you can eat. A few slices of carrot in a blend is a non-issue.
