Coffee & Water

(Laura C) #1

Since I started Keto, I have upped my water intake to 3 liters a day. I have 8 ounces of Keto Coffee in the mornings and sometimes I will have it later in the afternoon around 4 or 5 (caffeine doesn’t keep me awake at night for some reason). I can count my two 8 oz cups of coffee as water intake right?

Wow, I seem to struggle getting one liter of water in a day.
I know Im “supposed” to drink more, but Im up 2 or 3 times a night if I keep drinking water through the evening.

My dietitian said it counted.

My father lived on coffee and always made a pot to drink before bed.

Yes.

I struggle with my water intake on the weekends while I’m at home but during the week at work it’s easy for me to drink it throughout the day. I drink 16 ounces before work and another 16 when I get home from work and then drink the other 64+ ounces while at work. The getting up to go pee at night is quite annoying!

Caffeine is a mild diuretic, but not enough that the liquid doesn’t help keep you hydrated. Tim Noakes advises drinking for thirst and not overdoing it. He worked hard to get runners to hydrate themselves, and then the sports-drink people started pushing hydration to the point that runners started landing in the hospital and even dying. He had to start advising people not to drink so much!

Listen to your body and you’ll be fine.

3 liters is a lot…make sure you watch your electrolytes. Too much water can be as bad as not enough water.

Thank you Matt! I have not shown any symptoms of my electrolytes being low since I upped my water intake but I will definitely keep an eye out for any that may arise.

I drink at least 4L water each day. When I was tracking my fluid intake for a few weeks (stopped as I quickly realised I drink way more than the minimum), I counted just 50% of the liquid in my coffees due to the diuretic effect.
