Coffee lovers call out

(Susan Hogan) #1

HI there

Please help me regain my love of coffee. I am bereft!

So here is the rub…I am early in my Keto journey after years of abusing my body with a low fat lifestyle - fool me! This involved artificial sweeteners, the non Keto friendly type. I’ve been using Erithrytol since signing up for keto which has meant adding 3 (yes 3!) tsp per coffee. I don’t eat anything else sweet or even crave anything else sweet but weight loss has been slow so I decided to try hard to quit ANY sugar substitute after reading up on advice on Diet Doctor.

It’s no good. Tea fine, a bit of lemon juice in my Earl Grey and wonderful. Coffee - its awful!!! And I love coffee. So what can I do? I clearly need to add something to sweeten or give up something which has been my fasting lifeline - black and strong (I might add it’s decaf). Any suggestions folks? I appreciate it’s early days but I know that this course of action is not working for me. I need something to make it work.

Thanks in anticipation

how about just heavy wipping cream? makes it sweet enough for me …
i also like to make an espresso and top it off with hot water “americano style” makes it less bitter and adds volume.

This. Try it for a week. You’ll get used to it. I can’t stand anything sweet in my coffee anymore, and I used to be “2 tsp of sugar and some 2% milk” for years!!

Had this am with hwc as well.

What is this decaf you speak of?

Hey Susan! I was in exactly this same boat. I had to wean myself off the expectation of a sweet flavor slowly, plus using heavy cream really helped too. I still can’t do black coffee without cream, but the cream really sweetens it up, especially as I got more used to not tasting overtly sweet stuff like sugar and sweeteners all the time.

The other awesome thing is cold brew coffee, either purchased (but check the label for both carbs and any junk ingredients) or made at home. I only use cold brew in the summer, I add some MCT oil and HWC, but even without those things it’s not as bitter as normally brewed hot coffee, I never miss the sugar in it. There’s fancy equipment out there for making cold brew but I just mix (a lot of) coffee grounds with water and put it in the fridge for a couple of days, shaking it well a couple of times each day to keep the grounds mixed with the water.

Hope that helps!

I love coffee but never have liked it with sweetener or sugar of any kind. How about adding salt. Salt takes the bitterness of coffee away. You could also try some of the Ballistic Keto MCT oil powder. Its not sweetened but perhaps the flavored part of it will give you that little bit of something something (other than a sweetener) you’ll like https://ballisticketo.com/shop/

I’ve read this suggestion before from someone else. Or maybe it was you. Super curious to try it. How much salt do you add, roughly? Does it work in both hot coffee and iced? Thanks so much!

I use quite a bit in mine because I really like the taste of it in my coffee. I don’t know how much i use measurement or weight wise, I just give it 15 shakes into my cup (I brew 20 oz of coffee). Im not an iced coffee drinker but I would think it would work, it would just take a lot more stirring for it to dissolve.

Is there a problem? I use pink or blue packets in my coffee and drink lots! :grinning: I tried to get off it but thats how I like it… it may not be good for me, but overall doesnt seem to have an ill effect.

When I started I used sugar in my coffee. And a lot of it.

I switched to sweetener, (sucralose) about 5 packets in one cup! After a stall, I wanted to cut it down so I went from 4, 3, 2 and now I’m adding only 1 packet.

I doubt I can enjoy black coffee :pensive:

I like sweetener in my coffee but when I am fasting I cut it out and found that adding salt really does help. I sprinkle some pink rock salt and give it a good stir. I do this whether water fasting or crutch-fasting with a little butter and HWC in my coffee. Much less butter/HWC than when I am eating, but enough to get me through the fast. Somethimes I don’t need it - not sure why.

I sometimes use erythritol but most of the time, I’m using stevia drops (SweetLeaf). I just happen to like the vanilla creme flavor. It’s kinda expensive but it’s what I keep coming back to after trying other things. Same with my heavy whipping cream, I always end up back there after not liking other things as much as I want to like them.

I drink my coffee with sugar free French vanilla creamer, and it’s really good!! occasionally add a little bit of cinnamon too!! Hope you find something that works for you, life without coffee is no kinda life I wanna live!!!:relieved:

Is that something you make yourself? Or something you buy? Do tell! I was a Bailey’s junkie a couple of years ago, still miss that.

I use a French press/cafetière to make my coffee, half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a splash of vanilla extract in with the coffee before pouring on the water makes a delicious drink and both those things bring a natural sweetness too. Add a tbsp or 2 of HWC makes it even better!

Hi Susan, I’ve started keto 6 months. Lost 22 lbs in first 2 months. Then nothing for 4 months until I quit all the recipes with keto approved sugar substitutes, coconut and almond flour. Just lost 8 more lbs in past 2 weeks by sticking to keto basics. I use Terrasoul Cacao butter and Perfect Keto salted caramel collagen in my coffee. It’s like a Starbucks latte. So good. Sweetens coffee just enough. Adds to your fat macros and for me at least- weight loss!

I started out on heavy whipping cream, but I got suckered into buying a keto creamer that is actually quite good. It is Finaflex 100% Keto Creamer and it does have sucralose. I’m not sure how healthy it is, but it claims to have MCTs and collagen, and is probably better for me than the International Delight that I used to mix in my coffee. I don’t know if I’ll buy more once it’s gone (it was expensive) but I do like @Natasha’s suggestion of vanilla extract + cinnamon + HWC.

Wow thanks for all the really great suggestions. I shall try and report back those that I can. Based in the UK we only have limited access to some of the more specialist keto products but I am going to check and see what I can find out. Salt sounds interesting!

Much appreciated xxx

This sounds lovely! I am a big fan of both cinnamon and vanilla so it may be a winner!
