Coconut oil alternative

(Brandon Schenz) #1

Ok, I love butter, bacon, sausage, etc., but trying to use coconut oil makes me gag. I can’t stand the taste of coconut, kind of how cilantro tastes like soap to @richard.

anyone have any other alternative, especially like when baked for in recipes like @Brenda’s fudge…

Coconut Oil Substitute?

I like Avocado oil for the things you’ve mentioned.

Refined coconut oil doesn’t taste of coconut. I believe that it’s just as good for you.

If I can’t use butter, coconut or olive oil I use avocado oil. It doesn’t have a strong taste so it is perfect for baking or making mayonnaise. I also use walnut oil sometimes.

Yep. I keep both kinds. I don’t like coconut flavor on my steak

Bacon nectar goes great with everything

Lard.
It’s a “lost art”, but lard was a main staple in cooking and baking. Find yourself a farmer who can sell you “leaf lard”…the fat around the kidneys (pork). Render it yourself (really easy) and it makes a buttery tasting white lard that you can use in baking. It’s the most expensive fat on the pig, all other sources of fat on the pig come out more yellow in colour and have a subtle porky taste instead.

Or, maybe you can buy lard that already has been rendered for you in your grocery store. In Canada, the Tenderflake brand lard is used for baking.

I absolutely hate the taste of coconuts!!! My go to coconut oil is Carrington Farms. It’s a liquid, not a solid, and it has no taste of coconuts whatsoever. Be on the lookout for it, because you will love it!

Any refined coconut oil has had the coconut taste removed

I use avocado oil for mayonnaise.

I have been wary of trying refined coconut oil because “refined” often means treated in some unspeakable way. Costco now carries Nutiva Refined Coconut oil in a humongous tub, but I’ve been resisting for that reason (and I don’t mind the coconut taste, actually enjoy it). But I just googled it, and according to Nutiva’s website:

Nutiva Organic Refined Coconut Oil is made from dried coconut meat, or copra. Unlike other companies that use harsh chemicals to produce refined coconut oil, we gently steam refine our oil to achieve a neutral-flavor. Because of our commitment to producing the highest quality products, this process is certified organic and uses absolutely no chemicals.

So maybe I’ll try it after all!

That’s exactly the one I use.

I use the Nutiva Organic Refined Coconut Oil when I don’t want the coconut flavour and it works. In fact, I used it tonight to saute some tuna/avocado burgers.

Macadamia nut oil could maybe work as a substitute. It has a pleasant taste and aroma, to me at least, and I believe it’s oil profile is good for keto.

I like Trader Joe’s triple filtered coconut oil, it tastes good, not a strong coconut flavor and with the coconut benefits. I usually eat a tablespoon a day

I have understood that there are various ways to “refine” it, so as long as it is not chemically processed it still seems healthy.

I’ve had this. It’s good. Basically it’s MCT oil, that’s why it stays liquid.

Thank you all for these wonderful suggestions. This group is just so awesome.

 Just came across it -& was surprised! Didn’t know you could get " liquid" coconut oil!! Only one ingredient - I wonder how it is processed to remain liquid. ??

Lots of refining.

Thank you! Who knew it was such a complicated matter?
