Clarify protein

(Anna) #1

My understanding is foggy.
How much protein (total daily) do I eat?

I weigh 165 lbs,
45% body fat
Lean body is 90.75 lbs or 41.6 Kg

I would say a good starting point would be 25-35 grams. (41.6kg x .06, 08 respectively) You can adjust as your body feels necessary.

(Chris) #3

Gonna get a hundred different opinions, just so you’re aware.

There is no right answer. The experts vary widely in their opinions. Choose who you want to follow. Dr. Fung says 0.6 g/kg or less for people who are trying to lose weight. His theory is you want the body to recycle its old proteins preferentially to dietary protein. Here’s his blog post on the subject. FYI, they are switching to a subscription based service, so I don’t know how long the link will be available.

Per meal or total for the day?

Anna

(Anna) #6

25-35 grams of protein is how many ounces?

Anna

(Chris) #7

An ounce is 28 grams.

(Mike W.) #8

Per day. I’m 260 lbs and shoot for about 50-60 per day for reference. We need much less dietary protein than we’ve been told.

#9

Protein is satiating and nearly half the calories of fat. You have nearly half of your bodyweight as fat. Why not start at 1g per lean body mass and adjust fat grams to meet calorie goals? The suggestions given so far a ridiculously low.

(Mike W.) #10

I’m just suggesting what works for me. The only way to tell is to test your blood sugar. I also trust what Jason Fung suggests and the science behind it.

(Mike W.) #11

But 28 grams of A protein does not equate to 28 grams OF protein.

(Chris) #12

Since no one asked for A protein whatsoever, I gave the metric conversion only. I thought that was obvious but I apologize if it wasn’t. OP you’re limited to a 4oz piece of chicken a day if you follow this advice…

(Anna) #13

So 2 or 3 ounces of protein in a whole day!

Anna

(Anna) #14

1 gram of lean body mass in lbs or kilograms?

I am 90.75 lb in lean body mass

If 28 grams = 1 Oz

Then 3.24 Oz of protein for the day is what I am suppose to have.

I could see 3 Oz 2 or 3 times a day.

Don’t confuse gram weight and actual protein amount. Example, 3oz of ground beef is 20 grams of protein, 13 g of fat and 200 cals, therefore you could eat 13-14 oz and be at 90 grams of protein and around 1000 cals. Throw in a salad or some broccoli and you’re set.

(Andrew) #16

Just measure your BG. I’m sure it’s different for everyone but at some point your fasting BG will go up 10-20 pts. When that happens tou ate too mich protein.

I have T2D. My BG will be 150 in the am if I ate too much protein. It drops at least 20 if I am under .9 g per Kg of LBM.

If you are under 100 I would be doing a jig

(Dan Dan) #17

My opinion you should start at 1800 kcals 20g C / 90g P / 150g F Macros 5 / 20 / 75
I wouldn’t go lower than 1500 kcals 20g C / 82g P / 122g F Macros 5 / 22 / 73

12oz of fatty meat is 80g to 90g of Protein and 60g to 70g of Fat :grinning:

Calories and Macros are guidelines don’t be strict they are to help you not hinder you

You can play around with macros here :grinning:

Piggybacking on this: Every single person is different.

From my experience, I would start at the lowest recommended amount and test your BG response from baseline/before eating a keto meal. If there is no drastic response, bump up the protein a few grams the next time you test. When your BG response is larger than normal, I would try to stay there.

Thanks for the good information.
