The crazy thing is I was dirty carnivore most of September and went full carnivore at the start of this challenge and had no issues. It’s only been the last maybe 3 weeks. And I know I haven’t been super strict on it, with the occasional bad choices, but that actually has been consistent (my inconsistency lol). So why now all the sudden?! I did have these similar issues off and on through keto

Daisy, you mentioned earlier in this thread that your doc suspected crohns/colitis, etc so it sounds like you’ve had digestive issues in the past? The only reason I ask is because from what I’ve read, those of us who have wrestled with digestive issues like colitis tend to spend more time in the bathroom in the beginning of carnivore.
I believe PaleoMedicina says to allow at least 6 months on the PKD (Paleolithic Ketogenic Diet) for those with colitis type issues to see results and that diet is more strict that carnivore.
Yes, my life has been riddled with digestive issues. I’ve had every test run that could be run before I swore off doctors lol. I will give it more time. And try to be more consistent in my consistency lol. My biggest thing is people are watching me closely, waiting for the shoe to drop. They are saying how terrible carnivore is for me. So I can’t complain anywhere but here about it or I’ll get all the “told you it was bad for you” “you need to quit it” etc
I mentioned on a thread about oxalates that I wondered if all my electrolyte problems, particularly with magnesium deficiency, resulted because I was eating way more oxalate containing foods my first two years on keto.
I became very deficient in Mg and developed very uncomfortable heart palpitations. I had to up my dosage of Mg to 800 mg a day for several months to get the heart palpitations to go away.
On carnivore, we don’t eat oxalate containing foods. This can cause our body to dump oxalate crystals that may have gotten stored in our bodies over the years. I admit, that I don’t know off hand if digestive problems are a symptom of oxalate dumping. Also, oxalates combine with Ca and Mg so we don’t absorb those minerals. You may find that without ingesting oxalates you may not need to supplement as much Mg.
Fed up and swore off docs? That makes two of us, lol. Same here with all the tests and so on only to be told it’s IBS which is apparently what they say when they honestly don’t know but won’t say that. I have close family members with IBD and it’s not uncommon for folks with IBD to first be told they have IBS. Super frustrating. At the MeatRX website there are other testimonies of folks with IBD who have been healed on carnivore. It’s very encouraging to go read the victories there. They just posted a new one of a lady with UC who is now healed. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t find out about carnivore until after the docs removed her colon. https://meatrx.com/kelly-improved-her-kidney-disease-and-digestion-on-a-carnivore-diet/
Hang in there!
When I first started on carnivore I had to double my magnesium intake, as my RLS and leg cramps got way more severe. After about a month, I tried going back to my previous dosage, but the cramps came back. 2 nights ago, I didn’t take any pills, but used my magnesium body butter, then last night I did neither. I will continue to go without, until the cramps/RLS return. I do this self testing every few months. I would love to be off all supplements.
what you eat.
simple as that.
choices.
we can all easily go adaption times and the dreaded bathroom will come into play BUT IF your food is varying wildly in this changeover, we don’t know and can’t offer a real correction to it.
I mean I get it, I truly do but a food journal may help. What you eat, how you feel, bathroom hits eating this way, etc………………and that all boils down to you specifically… What in the world am I doing to maybe make it worse, what can I do to correct, do I see something that is off? am I truly eating off? what sets well and what might take me down?
a lot of ?? in your journey only you can truly focus on.
your own personal check and balances on this is super important now.
adaption can be very rough for many but if one goes in and out of carnivore the healing will ever truly start ever. It is a darned if you do try but darned if you don’t give it a fair shake.
You know something I just thought about that changed in the last few weeks? I started buying less quality beef. I buy store markdowns because I didn’t want to be eating all our beef that’s for all of my family lol. I mean, this morning I ate my beef and still had the tummy trouble, but maybe I’m messing something up in my gut by adding in all the store bought stuff… maybe I’ll add that to my troubleshooting. Stop buying the store bought beef for awhile and see if things improve
and mostly consider all the other that is not meat/seafood. Don’t ever blame the meat if the meat is not all you are consuming on carnivore.
just saying make it a real thought. That big deep down who are we kidding here thought…cause as I went lc into very low carb what I did in my food vs. what is good cause heck I just wanted some junk, etc. had huge effect.
Only thu true and trial/error time do we win it all…
so very cool you might see a difference!!! that is all we can strive for
@Ketodaisy It can really be frustrating trying to figure out stuff. Before regular keto I NEVER had leg cramps but oh boy, did they come on strong with keto. I found that keeping my sodium at 3,000 mg per day kept those away.
Since going carnivore if I try to stay at 3,000 it isn’t enough and the leg cramps return but when I up my sodium any higher I get D again, sigh. I’ve been trying to get this figured out all week. Your beef source/quality may be the problem. But like with regular keto, we’ll get it figured out somehow.
The reason I’m thinking this is although I may not be 100% consistent in carnivore 100% of the time, I am 100% carnivore 95% of the time lol. Maybe once every 10 days, I’ll eat something that isn’t carnivore. Usually something like some 100% unsweetened chocolate, or a spoonful of honey, or a “keto treat” at a special occasion, or some cheese, etc. Last Saturday was the first time in months that I had something that wasn’t at least keto.
biggie in carnivore is US…who we are and our troubles personal only to us.
So the ON PLAN all the time for however long it takes to heal is so vital.
I don’t think a carnivore on the board who has been thru this can ever truly put across the importance of healing your own body.
We read other’s have this and that great beneifts, and I have been there with many who it has take near a year to achieve a benefit that one has gotten in just 2-3-4 months. They feel alone…but it is an alone journey truly cause it is our healing time.
Some rock it all fast, others must Keep the Faith and glean all those benefits in their own time. So if we do go here and there on occasion, while that off track might be ok for some could set back another in high form.
Just saying cause it has to be about us and what we put into it and what strong feelings to we have to the plan, the science behind it and the other’s who came before us thru example…can we hold the fort to true healing as we need.
again just some chat info cause in the end carnivore is healing if we hold strong and it will be ONLY on our own personal timeline and only your body will do as it requires!
I haven’t stopped Mg, but I’m currently down to 400 mg of magnesium glycinate a day. I’ll be monitoring my heart palpitations closely.
Forgot to bring anything for lunch today, which I originally thought would be fine, as they have chicken.
I then realized that it is covered in Teriyaki sauce.
So I settled for two hard boiled eggs.
Luckily, that seems to be enough to hold me over until I get home and make my pot roast.
I made a pot roast the other day in my crock pot and like every pot roast I’ve ever made in my entire 50 years of existence it’s damn dry…
I put it on low in the crock pot, made sure there was plenty of bone broth to cover it and let it go on low for… well okay maybe a tiny bit to long. I put it on at 6 am and kind of forgot about it until 6:30pm where I switched it to “Warm” and then finally made it back to the house at 11:30…
So the way I cook it is I work some salt and a tiny bit of garlic and onion powder (yes I know this isn’t quite carnivore) into the 1/2 lb of burger. The packages of ground beef I have are 1.5 lb so I make 3 patties and crack one egg into the whole 1.5 lbs. Helps with moisture because I’ve found the Grass Fed/Finished ground beef I have is leaner than I’m used to cooking with.
I take a small copper bottomed pan (6 inches?) and melt about 1/2 stick of butter (KerryGold for the grass fed aspect) on low. If I have left over bacon grease or Beef fat from making bone broth I’ll use 1/4 stick of butter and bacon fat or the beef fat.
While the butter/fat is melting, I then form the 1/2 lb of ground beef into a wide flat disk about 3/4 of an inch tall or until the patty is about 5 inches in diameter.
Once the pattie(s) are formed, I turn up the heat on the pan until the fatty goodness starts to pop and sizzle a little. I cook the patties about 3 to 4 min a side for a medium rare patty.
I just listened to the “Two Keto Dudes - Salt Fix” show today and it seems to touch a lot on the importance of salt, how it relates to magnesium and potassium uptake
I’m going to go back and listen to it another time or two but there maybe some good info in there around this too.
I can’t believe you wrote that. I just finished my chuck roast after 4-5 hours of simmering on the stove. Except for the fatty area it was so dry. I don’t remember this cut of meat being dry when I was young and my mother was making it. Every time I cook chuck roast its dry…even with some sour cream. I had to laugh when I saw your post, like reading my mind. Eerie!
