Carnivore ZC SurfTurf-tember! 30-day September Challenge. 2022

Just got home from the doc and having a bunch of blood tests done. Went in fasting for my blood glucose level, immediately downed 2 coffees with heavy cream on coming home and am now eating a big bowl of fatty bone broth with a bit of meat in it. Phew!

I asked one of the nurses to email me the results from my last series of blood test, done in 2019. Yes, I don’t like going to the doc! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

My blood sugar (non fasting - tho, knowing me, I probably only would have had cups of coffee with unsweetened almond milk in it on the day of the test) was 5.3 mmol/L (95 mg/dl) which I’m pretty dang happy with given I was eating high carb. Be interesting to see what it was today. Being stressed b/c I feel horrid physically, plus waking every hour throughout the night might bump it up, but we will see.

Fasting status: Not stated
Cholesterol: 4.0 mmol/L ( < 5.0 )
Triglyceride: 1.8 mmol/L ( < 2.0 )
HDL Cholesterol: 0.87 mmol/L ( > 1.00 ) L
LDL cholesterol: 2.3 mmol/L ( < 3.4 )
Chol/HDL Ratio: 4.6 ( < 4.5 ) H
Comment: For established CVD risk (including diabetes) NZGG optimal levels are Cholesterol < 4.0, LDL < 2.0 and Chol/HDL ratio > 4.0.

I think I was vegan at the time of this test.

ANA was high again but not overly so. I have raynaud’s disease and fibro is currently being thought as a maybe auto-immune type thing. DNA was negative tho which is very good.

My B12 was borderline, so yea, I probably was vegan at the time.

The only thyroid level tested was TSH which was borderline high (news to me! damn doctors). I asked my doc to order a full thyroid panel today which should provide a better picture of my thyroid function.

My CPR was high but it always is (inflammatory marker).

Everything else was normal.

Just took this almost 10 at night

Yeah im still low and it’s kind of showing I still eat more when hungry so I prob eat about 3 table spoons of tallow out of the fridge on top of what I’m eating on my plate …

Doesn’t this sauce look super yummy

(Megan) #325

Definitely yummy! I made some carni mayo the other night that was super delicious. Mixed an egg yolk with 25 grams unsweetened greek yogurt, slowly added 50 grams of melted butter and a small sprinkle of parmesan cheese. Just whisked by hand with a fork when adding the butter. Put a few tablespoons of it on some rump steak and it was yum! Going to try making some carni alfredo next.

The 1st few minutes of my doctor’s appt:

Doctor: Hello, is this the 1st time we’ve met?
Me: No, I’ve seen you a couple of times so far. I’ve lost 13kg so maybe that’s why you don’t recognize me.
Doctor (concerned voice): Deliberately?
Me: Uhhhh yes. (More of a duhhh yes lol)
Doctor: Ok, what are you eating now?
Me: Well, I’ve cut out all sugar, processed foods, grains…
Doctor: Oh, so you’ve gone keto?
Me: Umm that depends.
Doctor: Depends? (puzzled look)
Me: Yes, it depends on what you’re going to say if I say yes!
Doctor: Oh! I’m very open minded.
Me: Cool. Well, I’m more eating ketovore than keto.
Doctor: So, leaning more towards carnivore?
Me: Yes.

I was trying so hard not to laugh. I decided to stop at ketovore and not push my luck, given I went to see him b/c I’m feeling like cr*p :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Awesome you got a great response from the dr… mayo recpie sounds great too…
.in Amber’s group is also Kelly hogan and because she too is trying out / testing this way of eating carnivore its great to have the feed back from the long term veterans doing this real time with us… kelly doing this about 2 months now …

(Vic) #328

You got one of the good ones.

Last time I visited a doctor was a medical check for work. In the drugs test they found Ketones and medical certificate validity was reduced to 3 months in stead of 1 year.
The fact that I was perfectly healthy otherwise didn’t seem to mather.

According to de doctor I was dangerously unhealthy. For that reason only.

It was rectified after a protest email, nonetheless I will use another doctor next year.

Meanwhile. I’m still eating raw in Gibraltar. Next week I’m in London, last time I was there I just stopped eating for 2 days. This time its 5 days, so I’m eating, don’t know were yet?

#329

I loved your conversation with the doctor. I could see myself having a very similar conversation with my doctor. He never actually asked about my diet when I had my physical back in January, and I didn’t volunteer it.

#331

Steak night after long soft sand beach walk. Public holiday here.
Expecting rain tomorrow.

(Karen) #332

Lol those wings are lidl’s buffalo spiced wings. I put them on a baking tray on a sheet of non stick grease proof paper and put in centre of fan assisted oven at 180°. The instructions advise 14mins but I usually end up doing them a bit longer as I go by smell rather than minutes lol.

Work today after my long weekend away. Its always a shock to the system getting up at silly o’clock so I am tired now and back in bed for another silly o’clock tomorrow morning.

Today I had my usual pack up of reheated chick slices in butter and they were lovely today. Then came home and made what was supposed to be a small pork knuckle (ham hock) well if I was feeding a family with all the sad trimmings it would have provided at least 3 or 4 meals worth of meat!. However, it was all mine  it was very very tender like pulled pork.

I followed it with a jar of mussels and just prior to coming upstairs to bed ate a hard boiled egg.

The mushroom thread kept me busy today… @Fangs explained things so very well there…
And you guys here won’t see my fancy shrooms here.

But I have pork! It was all I ate today as it’s so fatty and it’s shoulders, the danger item. So I am careful. But today it was easy. I ate ~2250 kcal yesterday and my last meal was pork shoulders and it kept me so very satiated until Alvaro’s dinnertime… I was on the forum, not feeling any hunger but when I went down and looked at my egg pudding, I felt some weakness twinge (physical weekness, the “need for refuel” urge, not some mental weakness!)… And indeed, I could eat a substantial meal. My pork, some eggs and quark with sour cream, tried to keep the latter low, I needed protein more than fat.
I felt wonderful after my meal, didn’t need a long time to reach perfect satiation, I wasn’t in doubt about needing more food or risk night eating… One big meal is just the best. Or maybe 2 smaller but still substantial ones but I just can’t seem to get the hang of that most of the time.
Really fatty meat helps with bigger meals, it just gives me more fat than protein and it can be problematic. But it may work if it’s not too much work to focus on leaner items for the rest of my food.
OMAD makes things easier.

The weather is almost cold now! Hungary had its first frost (at least in inhabited areas, there are some famously cold places, some crack in the ground in some mountains) already, fortunately not here. 7C is cold enough even at dawn… I only met 12C this far as I don’t wake up early.
I am looking forward to warmer weather at this point. The house is still warm, 22C. 4 more Celsius degree down until we turn on heating (our lovely, effective, moderately freshly cleaned out AC). We usually start it when we come back from the cemetery+aunt visit around 25th of October (we always use the usually long weekend containing 23th. sadly, it’s Sunday now, no extra free day. still, it’s the best time to go. we can get wreaths for the graves already but it’s prettier and probably sunnier and warmer than later. it’s a small difference but it’s something). Poor house left alone for almost 3 days, it’s usually a serious hit for its temperature and it’s barely warm enough before. Some unusually warm days around that time help. I think we started heating in November twice since we have this improved house (10 years? the first year was problematic, our windows got delayed, we had no windows in early November… that was a bit tough. but it was memorable when we had no upper level and it was raining too. we kept living in the house that was seriously rebuilt, new upper level and obviously roof, new windows, modified main door, some extra walls, even the basement door went to another place… we successfully lost the chimney along with some walls around there… the nearly passive house level insulation was a tiny thing compared to this… oh the terrace lost a bunch of pillars as well as the upper level changed its size somehow… or they weren’t connected? the proper pillars stayed, these were decorative wooden ones. IDK how we did it…).

I am extremely chatty today NOT related to food… I feel I think and write a bit less about food now. And today I had to cook SEVEN different things. Some were easy, just boiling the stuff and I didn’t do them all at the same time (I don’t even have enough electricity for that. what is it called… googling… current!) but still! But now I am done for the week, mostly. I will still fry or boil eggs or do something similarly difficult :upside_down_face: I roasted all my leftover pork shoulder and tasted some, it’s quite good! Fatty, lovely, pink, tender! Better than the too quickly fried, somewhat chewy part but I gladly ate that too.
I usually don’t like pork shoulders this much, somehow it seems less fatty this time, the pure meat is similar to pork butts, it just have more fat layer. But I am sure it’s not as fatty as it used to be…
If I was into conspiracy theories, I would be sure it is actually pork butts sold as pork shoulder, the cut without the price cap…
Whatever, I got some nicer than expected meat and it’s not like it was oh so expensive. $4.85/kg aka $2.18/pound. That’s nice.
And I got a little lard out of it so I can fry eggs in lard again, they don’t need much!

[…]
Some hours later and I managed to bring the CF card upstairs and even made some lame photo of my roasted pork! It had 4 vaguely similarly sized piece and only that bite left from one.

And my fried pork. I had 5 eggs, some quark with sour cream but they didn’t look as interesting and it’s tiresome trying to assemble my whole meal when I can’t possibly know how much I will eat.

Apparently I ate until I reached 120g protein. It’s a bit creepy… I didn’t just eat until I reached it and got satiated, I stopped and did something for a while and then decided I need more pork and had more pork… I could have eaten more. Or less. But I stopped just at the point that I could guesstimate 120g again, for the zillionth time. I do have higher protein days but the rest is around 120g lately, no matter what. 1 meal or 5? A bit leaner or fattier? I stuffed myself or I was hungry for a while after a meal? Doesn’t matter, it’s 120g in the end. Fat varies, protein just rarely and it’s always 120g or more. How on Earth can it be this accurate? Even with the inaccuracy of my tracking though protein is probably closer to reality, fat is the mystery macro on fatty meat days.

But I could pull a day off based on this fatty meat, yay! I was very modest when it came to my meat but it was pretty satiating so no particular self control was needed.
I have no idea about my fat intake due to fatty meat with its mystery fat content but no way I ate too much. But as I did it in one go, I am perfectly satiated. When I say this normally? No, that isn’t THIS perfect. It’s another level, apparently.

It was my most satisfying meal since long. But it’s always the case when I eat fresh pork I am not bored of anymore after some time…

Oh and my workout went very well today!
I only had 1 hour walk and kind of missed my “usual” 2.5 hour one but I do that (actually a bit shorter than that) tomorrow, I walk to the village to buy 50 eggs. Cycling would be quicker but I love walking around the big pond (the road for cycling is more boring and there is too much elevation, I need to train but it’s still not nice to stop to rest every time, usually 3 times in total as it’s too steep both ways), I may see a blue heron or an egret, I don’t see them on my normal small walks lately…
But I saw a huge hairy black/brown caterpillar yesterday, it obviously belongs to one of the biggest moths here… They are beautiful as caterpillars and moths alike.

I think you mentioned it before… Our LIDL doesn’t have such things, probably (one can never know nowadays, I see things I never did before) but I wouldn’t buy that anyway due to various reasons. But I am sure I can make some similarly looking thing happen if I put my mind on it.
Your wings are like many other things in this thread: they wear me down and one day I realize I am willing to put in the effort to have something very similar! It can’t be hard!

I typically go by color, it’s trickier with this one I suppose… But it will be just fine if I pull off the sauce thing.

(Michael) #336

Agreed, looks like you found a good doctor. Hopefully he can help you track down your issue. Let us know once you have determined the solution.

#337

Lamb chops for dinner.

#338

My planned lunch. Of course I couldn’t follow the plan, I never can but it’s still informative.
Guesstimation says 1900 kcal and 114g protein so it’s should be an OMAD day but we will see.

My meat supplies are low again (I have turkey but I don’t want that now) and I can’t go shopping for days… And I talked about the problems locally, I may or may not find some meat I am willing to eat in those small shops (okay, if I am serious, I just go to the butcher and buy chuck, I think he always has pork chuck but the variety is pretty small there too).

I am quite satiated, of course. The pork shoulder is very nice but different parts are different. One meat piece looks pretty lean and white, the other darker, fattier with a different texture… Surely the muscles met there and they weren’t the same, I still don’t understand how a pig works muscle wise, even if I properly, again researched the muscle groups, I had no idea how the body is cut and how different muscles look like…
But there were lovely fat layers. I was quite pleased with the overall fattiness. I cut off some leaner slices for Alvaro and he was pleased as well.

(Linda ) #339

Still Keeping it simple 4.3 ounces rib eye steak and lots of butter.

Next meals will be the same…

#340

Looks stunning! (I am not even hungry now…)

(Karen) #341

Very tired today. Chicken and butter formy work packup … no surprises there!.
Dinner was 2 small side plates of bacon rashers, just because they needed eating up from last weekend and I couldn’t wait for buffalo wings to get cooked!
Then had a jar of cockles, a tub of rollmop herrings and smallest ever tin of tuna!

Just realised those weren’t side plates the bacon was on lol.
