Can bone broth be made with ribs?

#1

I managed to get my hands on some grass fed beef, I got brisket and also some ribs. Can I make bone broth with the ribs? Also, I just purchased a slow cooker. Will I be able to use this? Boil in stovetop first …then transit to the slow cooker? How long for. New meat eater here, need help

Absolutely.

I believe you will want to roast them in the oven first before transferring to the crock

We save all of our bones - every drumstick and marrow bone and rib - and put them in a bag in the freezer. Then we make bone broth when the bag is full. Very yummy.

Ditto, this is the way to go, you get to really enjoy the ribs twice this way as well.

The only think Ill advise against is I once took some leftover smoked pork ribs and tossed them into the instant pot to make bone broth. When it was done, it was the most disgusting smoked pork soup I could imagine. essentially drinking the water pan from a smoker, or drinking the liquid in the bottom of a crock of bbq.

Oven roasted ribs might be fine tho!

Any bones should do!

This says “assorted bones”. Any recipe should allow for any bones.

I have a question about broth… if I cook my family noodles and meat in beef broth but I only eat the broth and the meat, is that broth full of carbohydrates?

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #9

Not as many as with the noodles. Some of the starch gets washed out when you cook the noodles, but some will remain when you add them to the broth. I don’t know of a way to determine how many carbs are left over in the liquid. Doubt anyone of us does.

I would go ahead and consume the broth with some of the meat. As long as you don’t have other carbs at that meal you should be ok.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for all your replies. Really useful. I’m a bit clueless on meat cooking, as I was vegetarian at ten years old so I’ve never cooked meat in my life! But I’ve been eating it last month, haven’t died, so must be doing something right. Right…ribs a go go this week!

I think that it would have carbs from the starches in the noodles. Better safe than sorry

So I’ve made it! Or rather - it’s still bubbling away. But man - this broth is fatty!! It’s oil central. I’m guessing when it’s cold I can strain it off. But I had no idea there’s be this much oily fatty stuff. I did roast the bones with a bit of butter to stop it sticking, and i had a bit of oil with vinegar that was recommended to put it, wish I hadn’t though! Not that it was that much oil. Could this much fat come from ribs?!

You want that oil, if you skim it off use it to saute veggies, delicious that way. Some of that you think of as fat is actually collagen, again something you want. It repairs your skin, nails, & hair.

I hope it’s collagen packed! I’m as wrinkly as an old forgotten tomato. Thanks for the advice.
