Butter in Coffee and drinks

(Oliver ) #1

Right so while I created a thread a few weeks ago about mostly using Heavy Cream as your fat source I have like come to notice again that its nice imo to have butter or similar type of fat in *coffee (and or other drinks). Have never honestly been found of adding Heavy Cream to drinks, like coffee (don’t very much like the taste of that).

Now It’s also funny because I have not seen or heard much buzz about about putting butter (or any) ohter type of fat like ( MCT or coconut oil) in coffee during the last few years so I like wounder if people here on this forum still add fat to drinks ?

Do we know why there is basically no noise about , or buzz about adding or making was known as keto or bulletproof coffee?

Its also interesting because I always get and have like always got so strange looks when I have put butter to my *coffee (or any ohter drink) . Not sure if it is just a cultural thing here where I live or if it’s something more universal. Now I still try (add butter to my coffee (but try to somewhat *hide it when with other people). Not sure if it is the same for you .

I personally never liked butter in my coffee (I just snack on butter, thank you very much  ) but I do like cream in it.
My fat source is my protein source and I try to eat as lean as I can (and a bit leaner than that as it’s still too much fat for me) so these are just joy additions.
IMO, everyone should add whatever they please as long as it works for them. I definitely never would hide it from others, rather the contrary  Let’s shock the sensitive ones! But it’s totally my business, if it’s strange for someone, it’s their problem, not mine.

It’s a bit interesting to me that some people need plain fat for a fat source even for a not insanely high fat percentage. I can do 90% fat just using pork  (Well I can’t as that’s just too boring. I actually tend to have 10g butter on my fat fast days as I do love butter and all my other items are less fatty.)
65-70% means nicely fatty protein sources to me and not much else but that’s probably already overeating to me.
But we all are different, that makes life interesting.

I add 1 T heavy cream and 1 T unsalted butter to my morning coffee. I have done this for several years.

No shortage of people still do that, it just fell out of fad status. I love them, but I’d rather eat those cals than drink them in 2-3mins.

I’ll say it again. You really should be getting your fat from your protein sources. Mainlining a bunch of fat isn’t going to help you get to your goal. It’s a crutch when you’re first starting out to extend your fasting window.

I think fat is substantially a special case, in the keto-universe.

If you’re taking fat out of your body’s storage, and metabolizing it, or taking fat (as with some butter) and adding it to coffee, what of it? For ketosis, ‘ketogenic eating,’ etc., no big deal, there. Butter does have some “milk solids” in it, so not exactly the same, and the fat in butter isn’t exactly the same as our stored fat, but the overall equation of “not eating carbs” is not much altered.

I’m finally using MCT Oil, and doing good so far, no stomach issues, at 1 tsp a day in my decaf. I also use 2 tbsp of Half and half, and loved using heavy cream earlier on. I felt I needed to up my fats so that’s why I started using the MCT Oil I bought about a year or so ago

I have a lot of butter so I could try that too, it sounds tastier, but also, I keep using EV00, and can’t seem to make a habit of using butter in place of EVOO, Denise  PS I am used to the way the EVOO heats, and don’t recall how the butter “heats”, your post makes me want to try it, not just waste what I have in the fridge

I wondered about using both cream, Mct and butter in my coffee. I have mostly salted butter but might be good to try just the unsalted I accidentally bought awhile back. But in the coffee I don’t think I’d mind, Denise  PS I would go easy on the amounts, don’t want upset tummy

It’s just lately I sort of, woke up to that fact I “felt” I needed to do way more fat than protein. Hard to get ole Ancel Keys out of my brain  Denise
