Broth / Concentrate / Collagen / Etc - what's the deal?

(Alex ) #1

Can anyone give me a bit of layman’s summary of these products, and why I’d need to incorporate them into my diet??

Reading some great reviews on Amazon for certain brands and wonder if it could help clear up some ailments, aches and pains etc.

Never dabbled with any collagen products so don’t really know what to look out for or expect.

I’m not an expert on this, but there are many cited benefits of bone broths and consuming some glycine. I know many diets heavy in muscle meats are high in glutathione relative to glycine. Collagen and bone broth are high in the latter. There may be some gut benefits as well. I recommend real foods over packaged; so I make my own bone broth regularly.

@EZB

Yeah, this is sort of what I’m reading. I’m one of those people who wants a lazy route into things but with most/all of those benefits, don’t really have the means to make my own, but I’ve seen some worthy looking concentrates on line.

What does consuming the home made stuff do for you?

just to add, I’m going into full carnivore for November (ZC) with @Fangs and all those peeps, and I’d quite like something hot / tasty and savoury to drink when I just don’t want to eat solid food. This stuff sounds like the sort of thing I might like to integrate!

well, I tell everyone it keeps me from getting Covid, and since I haven’t had it I’m not wrong! :rofl: But besides that, I just enjoy it. I’m not a tea drinker and I have a cup of bone broth before bed. As far as the lazy way to make it, I use my Instand Pot. Just a few hours and it’s ready. I make about a gallon at a time and it usually lasts me about a week, depending on what else we use it for. I prefer it made in a crockpot but that just takes too long.

I keep the water and all the juices from pretty much everything I cook from the oven and on the hob, but not sure if that’s the same really… certainly not much “bone” element… just the clarified fat and gelatine… I’m also sceptical about what that actually contains if it’s supermarket bought too.

can you imagine how much money you’d make if you patented this, and it was actually accurate. Glaxxo and Pfizer would be throwing millions at you!

Collagen actually composes most of the protein in your body: all connective tissue and most of the stuff being connected. As we age, our bodies produce less of it, so it’s a good idea to eat more of it. Many of the so-called ‘aches and pains’ of age are due in part or totally to reduced collagen. I don’t have time nor interest in boiling bones to mush so I have no qualms eating hydrolyzed collagen and gelatine. They are very versatile and can be used many different ways that boiled bone broth can’t. But whatever, collagen is good stuff any way you get it.

@amwassil

so do you buy a concentrate powder then Mike?

(Bacon for the Win) #10

I’d still die a poor SOB ‘cuz I’d never get in bed with big pharma!

@NelleG

really?! I’d be cashing those cheques and be on my way to a Private Island for the rest of time within about 24 hours!

@Alex_PN I use 3 products daily. Plain, unflavoured gelatine, Progressive Complete Collagen and Purely Inspired Bone Broth Protein. Gelatine makes jello of course, but both the Progressive and Purely Inspired can mix with hot or cold liquids without gelling. I use the Progressive collagen in my daily morning coffee ‘keto mix’. I make a hot ‘creamy’ bone broth drink with the Purely Inspired collagen, along with whipping cream and cacao butter.

(Alex ) #13

Oh right so you’re mixing it with non-savoury beverages too? I Just assumed it would be meaty taste?

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #14

None of the stuff I make with gelatine or collagen tastes like ‘meat’. The idea of actually drinking something that tastes like meat doesn’t really appeal to me. If I want meat, I eat meat. I’m not into stews much.

(Alex ) #15

Anyone in the UK recommend a flavoured / seasoned one??

(Ethan) #16

I always loved broth. I make it into different soups or just drink it. It’s very easy to make. I put water an a couple spoonfuls of vinegar (usually apple cider or champagne) with some bones of beef or lamb and slow cook in the instant pot with salt and cook for 24-48 hours. I may add a bay leaf or spices–or I may not. I sometimes kickstart it with bone broth substituted for water, but not the whole thing.

A word to the lazy: I don’t know if it has any health benefits, but Swanson’s Chicken Bone Broth is way yummier than their regular chicken stock or broth, IMAO. It was unobtainium in my area for a while early in the pandemic, while the regular stuff was still usually on the shelf, so I guess I’m not the only one who thinks that.

It costs a little more per 1 quart box, but it lists four times as much protein as their regular chicken broth, so on a per molecule basis (other than water molecules) it seems like a good value! I’ve been cooking with this stuff for about a year, when I can get my hands on it.

I swear by my collagen I add to my morning coffee! My skin on my arms was getting paper thin like my Dad’s and collagen helped a lot.

I ordered some for my 86-yo Dad to try and now he swears by it for his skin. It takes a few months but eventually we both saw results. I replenished his supply once so he would keep using it and after that I didn’t need to - he buys his own now.

You aren’t ancient like us :laughing: so you may not see the same benefits.

(Laurie) #19

If I have a “serving” of each of the three products Michael recommends, that’s about 42 grams of protein. So if I’m aiming for certain macros, I’d eat less regular food (eggs, meat, etc.)? Or do I count this differently somehow?

(Niamh) #20

Hi Janie, do you mind sharing exactly what you “order”, would be interested.
Thanks tons for sharing!
