Breakfast and after Dinner

(Davis Smith ) #1

Hi Guys, I am on my second day of Keto. I actually am using a food service that does keto meal plans, but noticing there breakfast is all with cream cheese (which i hate on anything but a bagel lol) My question is i know its important to get my fats, so what options do I Have as I dont really put cream cheese on my eggs.

Also for after dinner, i notice I am at 25 Net Carbs, but still hungry, any suggestions for what we can eat? I also feel like I def have the keto flu haha, im just groggy, and tired…and a little antsy. I want to see this through!

Any help is appreciated.

Several slices of bacon, with eggs fried in the bacon grease? If you scramble the eggs, mix them with heavy cream instead of milk or water, for a lovely taste and higher fat.

If you are hungry, the safest source of calories is fat, because it stimulates insulin secretion the least, and insulin secretion is what we are trying to avoid on this way of eating. Fry your meat (be sure to pick fatty cuts, such as rib-eye, or chicken with the skin still on) in fats such as butter, tallow, or lard, make gravy with heavy cream and the pan fat, or if you don’t want gravy, butter your meat.

The idea is not to go hog-wild with the fat :grinning:, but to replace all the calories you are no longer getting from carbohydrate. It is not a good idea to consciously cut calories, either; eat fat until you’re satisfied. This may involve a large amount of food at the beginning, but as your insulin level drops and your satiety signaling reasserts itself, you will find your appetite at a level that gives your body enough energy to heal. (If you have any excess stored fat, the body will maintain your appetite at a level that will allow it to burn both the fat you eat and the excess stored fat, without your needing to count calories.)

Thanks for your reply!! and for all the great advice! I see how the Keto diet can be so scary to new starters. We in our heads think we have so many different things to meet, otherwise we wont be in ketosis, and we will just be eating massive amounts of fat. For us newbies, when we think thats terrible, its stresfull. I am going to try to track, but not overdo it that i cant last. and most of all stay below 20-25 carbs. I honestly dont know how to stay below 20 carbs without maybe not eating breakfast, and limited vegetables. and just straight meat.

OH WELL!!! HERE WE GO!

Yeah don’t be too afraid of calories or fat when you start. Get yourself used to the way of eating and if for a week or two that means you are eating more fat than you are comfortable with so be it. Also try upping your salt which may surprisingly help with hunger. I have seen on here a few people reporting that. There are lots of things which can cause “hunger” which may actually be a craving for something. Don’t be too hard on yourself and keep it up. The way you feel on the other side will be worth the stress now.

Thanks! I have been pretty close on my macros, especially carbs have been all below 25.

I def think i got the keto flu as its like a head cold with no mucus haha

Yeah, and people aren’t told two things that are helpful to know: first, the macro percentages given by the calculators are percentages of total calories eaten, not percentages by weight, and second, fat has over twice as many calories as an equivalent amount of protein or carbohydrate, so it takes less fat to get the same amount of energy.

This means that if you eat 50 g of protein and 50 g of fat, you are eating about 31% protein and 69% fat. Looks a lot less intimidating figured that way, doesn’t it?

Cook yourself 2 eggs for breakfast, fried in Kerrygold butter… Add a couple of ounces of cheese, If you wish. And go from there. “I actually am using a food service that does keto meal plans”,
Stop using a " Food Service" Come on, you can cook a couple of eggs, and then be a cook from there.

Yes I already stopped…but wanted to make sure I hit macros first week, with all the confusion, and lack of time…took the easy way out…

A lot of folks come in saying this. But you will be surprised how easy it really is, once you start watching and knowing what you’re eating. Yes, meats are great, but you will probably start researching what types of certain foods have lower carbs, and will realize it’s actually not as hard as you think. … And if you’re getting ample fat added in, your hunger will start to decrease, and staying under a carb count will become a breeze.

Oh, and you mentioned not eating breakfast to help stay under 20 carbs. But actually breakfast foods (as we recognize them - eggs, bacon, sausage, etc.) are actually the easiest to eat with very little carbs, and is a staple for some doing Keto. … Eggs and Bacon will become you best friends.

Just read up on the threads in this forum and you will learn loads from the good folks that are here. Get great advice, and before you know it, you will be rolling along with the rest in no time. Good Luck
