Beyond Burger - Will something like this work for Keto?

(Patrick) #1

I’m on day 5 of keto and my blood glucose monitor showed 0.6mmol/L today. I had 2 Beyond Burger patties and they actually tasted quite good. I’ve seen alot of people speak negatively about them on the forum and I’m wondering if I can actually eat these in place of regular burgers on keto.

Thanks for everybody’s thoughts and expertise.

Here’s a link to the burger and it’s ingredients.

I’m a vegetarian and even I wouldn’t eat these. Maltodextrin? Vegetable oil? No thank you

Just an opinion…

I like these a lot better than some of the other burger substitutes out there. And if I were going to eat a “fake” burger, this is the direction I would go.

My wife is allergic to soy so a lot of the fake meats are a big no-no. We used to keep a little of the Beyond Burger type of stuff around for when vegetarian friends would come over to eat, then at least we’d have something they could eat if we made some chili or something and we could have some, too, without serious complications.

I came from a vegan and vegetarian background so have been around fake meats nearly all of my life. Left behind all of that about a year and a half ago when we went keto. I’m not sorry. I still am a little finicky about the meats, fish, dairy and eggs that I eat but don’t have any intention of returning to either vegan or vegetarian eating. I like having hamburger that’s one ingredient.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response. Do you have a good keto substitute for burgers?

(Patrick) #5

Thanks for the response. Maybe I’ll just limit these types of burgers to a minimum. I just find myself not being very hungry for burger meat on day 5 - maybe I just need to spice up my burger with more spices.

Yeah, fathead pizza, lol.

No, seriously, I’ve never seen a meat alternative that wasn’t full of garbage. I get my protein from nuts, dairy, a tiny bit of beans, and some fish. I keep forgetting I eat fish now. I guess I’m a pescatarian, actually.

I used to make black bean “burgers” before I went keto. Not sure they would be acceptable on a keto diet but they were pretty good!

Patrick, there are other meats, too. Fish is good. Chicken (especially thighs) is good. Some people do pork, though I don’t personally. And there are others.

Honestly, I wouldn’t do the veggie burgers as a part of my regular diet. It’s kinda relative… I know Sharon_E wouldn’t eat them, and I can’t blame her. I wouldn’t want to eat them on a regular basis. But if I am faced with eating one in a social setting on some particular occasion, I’m not gonna get too worried about it. Some of the other ones out there… I’m just not gonna do it.

As I read the list of ingredients I don’t think I came across a single item that is good for keto except maybe yeast extract and salt. And really unhealthy inflammatory oils and sugars. They are low carb so if that’s your only concern and not food quality go ahead. This is vegan junk food pretending to be healthy. Why not just eat a real burger? Or a salmon burger, or even just an egg?

If you’re trying to do vegan keto you’re in for a very hard time protein wise. :cowboy_hat_face:

(Patrick) #9

Thanks again for your thoughts. I’ll go back to my regularly scheduled keto and cut them out.

(Patrick) #10

Ok. Thanks for your thoughts. I’ll return to regular burgers when I’m in the mood. Eggs and burgers have served me well so far. I am curious though. Does it generally take 24 hours for a food to impact ketones in a blood glucose monitor? I’d like to check mine tomorrow evening to see where I stand after eating 2 of those patties.

(Full Metal KETO AF) #11

They aren’t high carb so I doubt that it will affect your numbers. Only four net. :slightly_smiling_face:

(Patrick) #12

I’ll report back to confirm. I think you’re correct though.

(Karen) #13

As a vegetarian, how do you keep your protein adequate?
I can’t do soy.
And keto carb limit would make this tough.
What are you daily protein grams and how do you achieve this? My daughter is vegetarian with auto immune issues. I’d like her to try keto

A steak???

It’s a challenge, I’ll admit. I had to start eating fish.

I eat eggs, cheese, fish, nuts, seeds, and I’m looking into nutritional yeast. Don’t know if that’s keto or not. I don’t do soy either.

My goal is about 50g/day, based on .6g/kg. I looked back over the last month on Cronometer, and I’m all over the place. Like, 10g one day and 100g the next. I figure it averages out in my favor in the end.

Edit: Forgot things like HWC, and once in a blue moon I’ll do a little bit of white kidney beans, like half a cup (they’re the lowest carb beans I know of), and probably other stuff I’m forgetting.

(Rosemary Easter) #16

Why would you want to eat something with so many ingredients even if it did taste nice? Surely simpler is better - a burger made with minced beef and egg to bind.

(Karen) #17

I’ve been listening to Dr. gundry and he mentions that Eden beans ate pressure cooked And therefore low in lectins

#18

I don’t do soy, though. I wish I did because I love black beans!

(Patrick) #19

I confirmed that the Beyond Burgers did not impact by readings. Yesterday, 24 hours after the burger, my ketones were 1.3mmol/L. However, today they were 0.7mmol/L. I ate some Splenda today and Orbit sugar free gum within the past 24 hours. Do you think these are what impacted my ketone level? Or do they naturally fluctuate like that within the first 10 days? I’m on about day 6-7.

(Running from stupidity) #20

Exactly - one of the big advantages people get from keto is that they eat LESS crap, not more/different crap.
