Best dark chocolate to buy?

#1

I’ve been wanting to try dark chocolate but there are so many online and some with no nutritional info. Dose anyone eat dark chocolate as a treat or to bake with? If so which is best?

i’ve tried Lily’s dark chocolate baking chips, Lily’s dark chocolate bars, choczero, and ghiradelli unsweetened baking chocolate. i’ve also used raw cacao butter and added my own sweetener.

all of the listings for those on amazon “should” have pictures of ingredients and nutritional info…some of the above mentioned you can get cheaper than on amazon…especially lily’s and ghiradelli (like sprouts, whole foods, mom and pop health food stores)

I frequently eat dark chocolate (at one point daily).

As for which is best, basically I start by looking for anything of 80%+ Cacoa (that’s a decent place to start, or a bit lower if you can’t do it, but over time you’ll find darker makes more sense).

So, after you find a bunch that are 80%+ (if the chocolate does not say Cacao %, it’s usually somewhere around 60-70%, so not what you want for usual consumption). See if you can find some nutritional info to narrow down further and fit what amount of carbs you can fit into your day (not all at the same % will be the same amount per serving). If you can’t find the info… you can risk it based on comparable products if you want, or just avoid.

Anyway, getting to the specifics: I have usually gone with Lindt 85-90% Dark Chocolate Bars(not flavored otherwise, just the dark choclate), the kind you can often find in stores around here on sale: https://www.amazon.com/Lindt-Excellence-Chocolate-3-5-Ounce-Packages/dp/B000HQNBSU/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1496253850&sr=1-1&keywords=Lindt+Dark+Chocolate

More recently I’ve been eating Divine 85% chocolate for reasons not related to health and diet, and if I recall correctly it’s actually not as good of a general profile as the Lindt but it works well and tastes pretty good (a bit different, so up to opinion which is better): http://www.serrv.org/product/85-dark-chocolate-10/divine-chocolate.

But, there are plenty of other options out there, and you could also make your own if you are into that for which there are lots of even more keto recipes.

For all the above, I usually stick to around 1-2 “squares” equivalent of the Lindt, which fits fine for me and actually gives me usually extra room to add some peanut butter on top if I want (sometimes I don’t want to). On a usual keto diet, that’s typically more than enough to satisfy me at the end of the day, and I usually wouldn’t want to have much more even if it fits fine.

I find I don’t like dark chocolate that has soy lecithin in it–Lindt, I’m looking at YOU!

Trader Joes has some really nice 85% chocolate and it breaks into small thin squares so you can (try to) moderate your consumption.
I also like Tazo 85% chocolate which comes in round pucks, but I can’t find it locally anymore. I found some in Whole Foods Henderson, NV when visiting there last week but I was afraid to stock up because it was so darn hot there.

I also eat 100% bakers chocolate on occasion (don’t like Trader Joes, it’s kind of acidic, but do like “Baker’s” brand found in the baking aisle of grocery stores).

I can’t abide stevia in any form so Lily’s won’t work for me. I’m jealous of those who can eat it, though.

Lindt sold in Canada doesn’t contain soy lecithin.

'Does Lindt & Sprüngli Canada sell soy lecithin free chocolate?

Soy lecithin can be found in our regular dark chocolate products, as well as milk and white chocolate. The excellence 70%, 85%, 90% and 99% bars do not contain soy lecithin as an ingredient. We have an allergen control program in place and adhere to strict Good Manufacturing Practices in order to reduce the risk of cross contamination. However, we do label all of our products with “may contain soy” as a precaution for the most sensitive consumers.’

I don’t buy Lindt but my husband has gifted me a few bars that all had soy lecithin in them. Different in the US or was it lighter chocolate that he bought me?

I agree with @Jacquie … i’ve compared Lindt to other brands at the grocery store, and Lindt wins the competition every time. You could also find a local chocolate maker in your area…but, you will probably pay the high price.

I buy Lindt -90%

Lindt 90% for me too

Lindt 90% wins it for me everytime

I LOVE Trader Joe’s 100% baking bar - I think it’s delicious and doesn’t need any sweetener!

(James storie) #12

I like Lindt 85%. The one I buy doesn’t have soy, that’s why I buy it

I’m slightly hesitant to share this info… just because I’m greedy, and I don’t want my supplier to run out! but for the love of keto and chocolate, here goes: I buy 100% dark chocolate from a local chocolatier here on the west coast. It by far beats any other brand I’ve ever tried. But the kicker? They have a website, AND you can buy online!! It’s the most amazing :100: chocolate I’ve ever had… smooth, creamy, not bitter or grainy or chalky at all. It is pricey though… but I only ever get it once and awhile :innocent: Here is the link if anyone is interested:

KCKO!!

This 100% bar, so smooth and creamy. Unfortunately I don’t think they ship outside of the UK, but if you are in the UK you can pick it up at Sainsburys. At only 8g net carbs in a whole bar I usually (ok always) get through half a bar a day.

I melt this down, add melted coconut oil no sweetener needed. Pour into molds and freeze them. Smooth and tastiest chocolate pieces I have ever had (I am a hard core chocoholic) .

I also make them with 100% raw cacao powder & coconut oil, but have to add stevia to those. I add slivered almonds and unsweetened coconut milk to this and it is like an Almond Joy bar.

I’ve not looked -now I’ll have to…

(Allie) #17

The info on the Lindt site says “may contain” soya which just means it’s made in the same factory as other products that are made using it -

May contain hazelnuts, other nuts, milk soya

Whew!!!

I usually buy the Lindt 99% on Amazon but they are out. I just ordered Green & Black’s 85% on Amazon, looking forward to trying it out - will report back.

Duncan_K, they now have the Montezuma’s Absolute Black bars at Trader Joe’s in the US! I love them and just bought 10 more bars!
