August Fat Burnin'

I have found a 2-4 hour eating window to be my preference (sort of OMAD?) but I have begun to enjoy slightly longer fasts (48-72 hr) really work well for me. Again, the social side of life is what seems to make it the most challenging.
Tell me, why the 7 day for fighting IR, Dr Fung suggestion/research and/or are longer fats shown to reduce IR much more quickly and with less “rebound” (if there is such?) once OMAD or 16:8 is resumed?
Thanks, and nice work on not eating for 5 days :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

When fasting I don’t notice the dreaminess you describe, but rather the mental clarity and now, energy like never before to accomplish a myriad of even very mundane tasks (cleaning out closets, organizing “stuff” UGH!)
I believe you may have more of the BG fluctuations since you are showing high BG readings as far as I have noticed from your posts? But, I am not the expert, and surely someone with more understanding will chime in and make us both the wiser!

Thanks ! The 20/4 protocol is also my favourite, I lost a lot of weight with it. But I hit a plateau :pensive:, so I had to shake it up.

This is what Jason Fung says about fasting and insulin resistance in The Complete Guide to Fasting :

« Even shorter fasts of less than twenty-four hours can prevent the development of insulin resistance and reverse relatively minor levels of resistance, and they certainly help with weight loss.

But because breaking insulin resistance requires not just low insulin levels but persistently low levels, we need longer fasting periods. »

It was weird, I felt like I had both the clarity and energy you describe, plus also needed to make sure I paid attention and stayed focused doing mundane things. I broke my fast yesterday, but during it, most of the time I felt great and got tons of organizing and cleaning done. It was great. I am looking forward to that experience next time I fast.

I mainly have the clarity and general good mood, it hits in late afternoon on my 20-hour fasts. If I’m at the grocery store, I notice I’m no longer stressed out navigating the parking lot, and I pretty much bounce when returning the cart back to the store, ha ha.

Egg and bacon fast UPDATE: weighed myself this morning and lost three pounds in 3 days.

Back to IFing today.

Aha! I see, and so the 72 hours begins (began last night at 6PM) I don’t know if I’m up to a 5 or 7 day fast, but only for social obligations. I think if it were just up to me, I could probably do alright with either of those longer duration (5-7 day) .
Day three, for myself, always feels like “let’s keep going!”
I’ve got about a 10 vacation coming up near the end of the month, and plan to fit a 36 hr fast in at least twice and keep most of my days to the 20/4 for the most part.
That IR is like a lurking monster in my head…I want to do what will give me the best health outcomes and be manageable.
I am so grateful that I have been led to all of this information! Nutritional ketosis as well as the power of IF. It is well documented and with ongoing research continuing to bear out much of what we are (as a keto community) coming to understand as a way of life that can heal and perhaps prevent a very sad end to our days.
Onward ho!

Did you take your BG when you feel unfocused ?

(Sonia A.) #169

You were high on ketones :grinning:.

I only lost about 2lbs on my last fast, but I too am onto a 72hr, started last night  I’m not sure how often you want to do an egg fast though? I thought this was meant more for a stall, or am I confusing that with the Fat Fast?
Best to you, fast on!

#171

Yes, I think it sounds like ketones too, amazing feeling!

#172

Probably, but I just wanted to try it because we bought a TON of fresh chicken and duck eggs from a friend and had to eat them up fast.

#173

I have noticed I am generally more positive and pleasant to be around while fasting, except for a few hours here and there when I might be crabby and hangry. Overall I am definitely in better mood while fasting. Endorphins maybe.

#174

Do you have any problems with starting to eat after the three day fast? I am thinking about trying to get a 5/2 (5 fast, 2 eat) going but it seems like I have a couple meals worth of after-effects from the fast (GI unpleasantness) when I end the fast, even only 3 days. Just about by the time I get back to normal, I would be starting a new fast. In that case, wondering if I should just go longer (7, 10, 14 days? More?) if possible (not sure I could possibly do that, but other people do, so maybe…) Just another weird thing I am pondering.

Ketones rock.

#176

One time I did, and it had not changed much from a few hours before. But it could have been swinging back and forth in there. There are possible other factors, like too much caffeine (I let myself have it during a fast), could have been artificial sweeteners (I know some people think that’s a bad idea while fasting too), or just not enough sleep (kids).

#177

Maybe all that mood enhancement is related to this (and it’s not just fasting but keto):

Heard about that one on the Keto Talk podcast. Dr. Nally’s final episode. :frowning:

Eating but cannot think today. Brain fog. My Nova Max ketone meter says 1.3, so still in ketosis. Much as I enjoy the keto WOE, I already miss my fasting brain. Of course the first day of fasting I’ll be like, I miss my coffee with cream and parmesan noodle soup.

Well, I’ve not had any GI issues when I break a fast, but my longest has only been 80 hrs. That being said, I also try to begin with butter and CO for my first “meal” and then move onto more as I like.
Of course, your tummy may be more sensitive than mine :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I tried coffee with heavy whipping cream for the first “meal” this time, but that didn’t work out well. Do you just eat the butter and CO straight up or in broth or coffee or something?
