APRIL 2019 IF/EF Chat ALL WELCOME

We are all soup people here. So it is a natural. We found one guy at the main farmers market here that sells the bones for like $2 / lb grass fed. Everyone else wants >$6/ lb. Heck I just bought some beef liver grass fed from him for $3 / lb. Says nobody buys liver. I’m going to make up a big batch of pate keto style and freeze in 4 oz portions. I’ve never made pate before.

For the bone broth I add more salt when I eat it because I never know how much to add when cooking it. I also add a few drops of soy sauce for flavor.

Checking in at 48 hours. This fast has been weird and not as much fun as before. I’ve been busy-bored at work and just feel a little off. Maybe part of that was quitting coffee somewhat cold-turkey for 2 days. I don’t know, maybe I’ll continue with this one or maybe I’ll break it. I just wish I felt like a million bucks like I have in the past.

My wife is doing better than I am in some respects (very cool actually. )

We’re coming up on 48 hours and both in good shape for hunger and health. She was having hunger earlier but basically I made her some of the stuff I discussed above.

She’s been having a bunch of what I am calling ‘boosters’ (not ‘cheats’) and I’ve had nothing extra, barely drinking fluid even though technically not dry fasting.

But here’s the cool part:

My Glucose is 94 with ketones at 0.6

SHE’S at Glucose 95 and ketones 2.4 for
DrBozRatio of 40 and GKI of 2.2
deep ketosis, therapeutic autophagy.

While my GKI is “weight maintenance”

(Though I have dropped 5 1/2 lbs – you don’t suppose I am fat adapted do you?)

It’s early yet (first 2 days) and remember there are all sorts of ranges of keto flu from barely noticeable to pretty bad.

Doctors Phinney & Vostek (at least) say keto flu is electrolytes so stay hydrated and get your minerals.

That’s cool that your Wife is getting into Fasting with you. My Wife likes to Fast with me as well, but her blood doctor at first mentioned he would rather she didn’t, since her Blood Thinners are supposed to absorb better with foods. But so he asked that she at least not Fast for too long, and to try and limit it to a few days at most. … Actually, She and I, along with our Son are all Fasting presently and she said she would like to Fast til Thursday night, making it a 3 day (72 hrs.) I’m always up for a good Fast, and it’s even better when they do it as well, since no cooking will be required. Even though I don’t mind even cooking while Fasting, it just eliminates clean up, etc. And we plan to try to do some workouts down in the basement tomorrow evening, since I haven’t been able to since my surgery 12 weeks ago, so I want to start working my way back into it, and this would be a good time to get started.

Congrats to you and your lovely bride. NOLA is one of my favorite cities. Enjoy!

I’m hoping your wife succeeds and enjoys the benefits so many notice. I had only been keto for a little more than a month when I did my first 5 day fast. Looking back, it was probably too soon and I thought I would not like fasting ever again. For me it seems to get easier and it doesn’t take much to occasionally convince my mental self that I’m not really hungry.

I wish I would have taken pictures and measurements when I first started but I was doing it to reduce inflammation and didn’t care about much else at the time. I’m only about 10lbs away from a normal healthy weight so I am still well motivated. :joy:

Oh, and I’m 52 hours fasted. Guess I’m going one more day. Or so…

I followed Eve’s 10 day fast at the time. Some days she was hysterical with her honesty. Glad you are enjoying it!

I’m also a big advocate of this!

I caved in at 52h…

Wasn’t hungry at all, but my brain pushed me to have something since i woke up at 3 am after just 4h of sleep.

In my still slightly hormonal state lack of sleep can cause me to become an evil dragon queen…so I decided to have a carnivore meal, feed today and tomorrow morning and try another 48h - 72 h fast. I have to go cold turkey on the coffee again to see if I can avoid extrem lack of sleep on day 3 …

I’m a fan of this as well. One week I was so hungry I felt like I over ate but my body was telling me to eat more. I had a big container of pork rinds and eat too many. I did not gain any weight after hitting my refed wt (2 days after) and the next week I lost more than usual.

Yeah, it’s strange isn’t it. You can feel like you’ve over-eaten and sometimes see even better results. I find this to happen more-so when eating OMAD’s too. … But I always eat enough, and I surely don’t under-eat. Seems to work well.

Well, I decided to break my fast at 60hrs because of uncertainty around when I can eat this evening and Amtrak schedules.

I don’t feel disappointed about it at all. In fact, I’m super excited. I woke up early to get to the gym so I would have time to ease into breaking my fast before work in case I have some problems down there.

I don’t normally measure my morning BG or BHB ketone levels because I suffer from the Dawn Phenomenon and high readings are depressing. When I started strict keto my fasting morning BG would be 120 to 130 mg/dL even hours after waking. Then gradually after many months, it came down to 102 or so. Granted I was about 58 hours fasted this morning but a BG reading 15 mins after rising was 77 mg/dL. I have only seen my BG in the high 70’s once at 60+ hrs fasted in the late afternoon. Never in the am. Never. My BHB level was 1.4 mmol/dL which gives me a GKI of 3.0 and a Boz ratio of 55. I take those values.

So It seems I am busting through the dawn effect. I’m assuming that the reduction of adipose fat and the reduction in hyperinsulinemia is the reason why.

I think this is a new place for me because the morning exercise was a bit weak. This may be a new low AM BG level for me because my morning exercises are usually strong. But I take this as an FTW.

Fasting and TRE has really helped me so much. If you are a newbie and reading this please get the Obesity Code by Dr. Fung and read it. This book is a life changer.

Happy Wednesday everyone! I love how active this thread is!!! So many fasters this month!! :purple_heart::muscle::boom:

I broke my fast just after 48 hours when I realized I was breaking the cardinal rule of fasting: I just didn’t feel well all day so best not to push through. I’m glad I did, I feel better this morning. I’ll eat today and then do another 48 to dinner Friday.

I love how @Herb_Martin and @Digital_Dave are having some success with family fasts. My brother lives about 20 min from me and I’m trying to figure out how to sell him on it. T2D runs in our family and he’s got as much weight to lose as I have. He’s an airline pilot :airplane:, which I think would be a great setting for fasting, I mean who wants to eat that crap on the planes anyway? We’re going on a hike next Tuesday, I’m thinking about how I’ll try to talk it up to him. Meanwhile, I’ve got my mom fully in to the keto WOE but she’s on some meds that would make fasting a challenge. I never expected that I would influence the way she eats but she’s seen me lose lots of weight eating yummy foods … that convinced her to try it

Jason Fung talks a lot about “body set weight” and how this is determined by insulin resistance. I have been seeing this too - when I eat between fasts I eat A LOT! Yet the weight just keeps coming off. I think this means that I have a new (and lower!!) body set weight and that my body is trying to get down to that. I LOVE thinking about that!!! :boom::heart_eyes:

Yeah, this train is definitely getting full this month so far. We all might have to pitch in and toss some extra Ketones into the furnace to get it moving up to speed.
