Any past vegans or vegetarians?

#1

I am on a carnivore diet and I do believe this is healthier then my previous diet which was raw vegan …I slowly transitioned to just vegetarian and then slowly into seafood before I tried carnivore. I use to be so anti eating animals for ethical reasons because a long time ago when I was 17 I saw the documentary called “meet your meat” narrated by Alec Baldwin. It was so horrible what they did to these poor animals ! I couldn’t touch meat after that. After a period of time I did more research learning my diet was mainly of sugar and also reading about the importance of meat , I emailed a guy in Facebook named Daniel Vitalis who was big raw food guy at the time…asking him about raw vegan for kids…he told me he has changed and is no longer raw vegan and encouraged me to read the book “nourishing tradition” and not to raise my kids raw vegan. That was the beginning of me eating meat again…slowly …starting with seafood. I only buy grass fed organic meats bc I know they are farm raised and hopefully humanely slaughtered, I try to stay away from anything that is factory farm produced and not labeled “farm raised” “free range” “grass fed.” I believe consuming meat this way is ethical and in general healthy bc I know I’m not getting GMO fed animals. I am an idealist and use to always argue the garden of eden was vegetarian, and animals originally were our friends, and it wasn’t until the fall of man in the garden that we ate them…lmao I use to be quite the softy. Now though I believe if God didn’t want us to eat them, he wouldn’t have made them out of meat. Any one else transition from vegan or vegetarian to carnivore or similar ? I’d love to hear your story

No I. I have a daughter that eats semi vegetarian and says meat hurts her stomach. Especially red meat. She does eat barb junk food. I’m wondering if this is a gut biome issue.

It could be , it’s hard to say I know I use to have gut issues when I was on carb diet and tried eating meat but once I cut out all the carbs the meat no longer bothered me.

I was vegetarian for about 3 years 20 years ago. I felt healthy at the time but was plagued by atherosclerosis and lost my leg anyway, it was an attempt to get better. I wish that I had been turned on to keto back then, might still be a bi-ped! :cowboy_hat_face:

There are tons of people who were either vegan or vegetarian, to name Ted Naiman and Dr. Geogia Ede as a few. They might not be on this board, though.

I was not strictly vegetarian, but was very low fat, which ended up being close to vegetarian. Ate that way for a long time.

I’m not carnivore, though, but close. I usually eat meat at lunch (sometimes might have olives, condiments), but will eat whatever my wife makes for dinner, which often includes vegetables. But I will often have only meat for dinner if I can.

I did not design this universe.

I am as victim as the animal I am eating.

I’ve been keto since last Aug. Before that was vegan, vegetarian, raw vegan, fruitarian, low fat, high carb, potato diet, etc lol seriously I tried it all! For almost 8 year’s. I gained 30 pounds, suffered from depression, chronic fatigue, got PCOS(inactive according to my doctor) and felt bloated most of the time. I was like you and always researching or watching documentaries. I started craving eggs and seafood and one day heard about keto and that was it for me😊
I still eat a good amount veggies, and eat the best quality meat I can. I feel so much better eating this way! I’ve lost weight, no more bloat, and have my emotions in check. I’m never going back. My husband owes me a vacation because he bet me I wouldn’t last eating meat longer then 3 weeks!! HA!

Did the depression get better?

I was raised vegetarian. Over the years, I tried vegan and raw vegan, but it just made my PCOS worse.

(MelissaH) #10

yes! much much better

I was vegan for about ten years prior to keto.

I did not realize there are so many vegetarians.

vigitables give me severe bloating specially after keto

Back in the 80’s I did the vegetarian thing for a few years. I read a book called “Old McDonalds factory farm” and was so shocked and disgusted by the way these farm animals were treated, I stopped eating meat right away. I can’t quite remember what I was eating since it was over 30 years ago but Im sure it was crappy and high carb. Then one day I started missing meat (specifically cheesesteaks…I lived in Philadelphia then) and started to eat meat again and have eaten meat ever since. Now I try to get what meat I can from my local farm markets

I was a vet tech for 15 yrs and I rehab wildlife. I have been vegetarian most of my life (except when I did Atkins to lose weight for a little over a year in my 20’s) and vegan for about 8 months but my hair fell out and I got 4 upper respiratory infections (more than I had had in years).

I love animals, it’s been my profession to care for them so yes, I have issues with eating meat ethically, but I also have cancer have been given 2-20 years to live (I know, wtf, right?) so I have to take care of myself and this way of eating is an attempt at that. I don’t even really like the taste of meat all that much but I have been nipped or attacked by every single pig I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. They hate me. In a strange twist, I like pork the best. I also really love fish and seafood, so that’s what I eat along with veg and dairy.

I grew up vegetarian. The family was of a particular religious order that vegetarianism was “unofficially” demanded and vegan was highly encouraged. I did not embrace the vegan part of it at all until I was in my 30’s when I and my wife decided to “get healthy” and go vegan. It was not a good decision for either of us. We abandoned that in the mid 2000’s and basically went to a more standard, plant heavy, American diet only trying to eat “healthy” foods. Once again, that did not work out well for either of us.

About a year and a half ago, I found myself morbidly obese and flirting with significant insulin resistance and set up nicely for a heart attack or stroke or both. I had to make some changes. Told my wife I was gonna try keto and she could do it with me or I’d just do it myself. (Secretly, I figured if I didn’t make a change, I wasn’t going to live a whole lot longer anyway so why not.) She decided to do it with me. Fast forwarding a year and a half, we’ve lost over 120 pounds combined, have energy to do stuff and are healthier than I think we were back when we tried to go vegan. We’re not carnivore but have made sure we’re eating good quality animal protein since going keto. We do still eat some veggies and a few small fruits but I think from our perspective today, if we decided to go carnivore, it wouldn’t be a really big deal. Back when we were vegan, I’d have looked at my present self as though I had 3 heads.

That’s sort of the short version.

I was vegetarian/pescatarian for over ten years. I don’t entirely identify as pescatarian because I maybe ate fish once a month. I ate a lot of legumes and veg. I was also raw vegan for about 5 months.

During all of this I just kept getting fatter and sicker. I feel so good now. I would never go back now.

Sure, back in the hippie days, and when I was hanging out with vegans or vegetarians.

But after much trying of different things, I believe I need to eat meat, not plants. As long as meat is legal and available, I’ll keep eating it.

(Ivy) #18

I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for over 15 years and became pescatarian last October after some reevaluation. I had a vitamin D deficiency that took six months worth of treatment to start to bring me back to normal; it was a big factor in making the change. My latest blood work doesn’t show the deficiency, and I owe it to the change in diet. Other wins: seafood and fish have helped me lessen the amount of processed foods I eat (specifically protein), and I find it makes keto and dining out a ton easier!

Cool quote, who’s that from

I too was deficient but in B12. I had to get some shots for awhile and then supplements.
