This might be a crazy stupid question. I started doing KETO in January and tracked my macros for about three plus months. I decided if this was going to be a way of life I did not want to track for ever so I stopped tracking. I am at a point now that I am wondering if I am fat adapted or am I just doing a low carb diet. I have totally changed my way of eating and that is great but still want to lose about 50 more pounds. The last few months the weight has been coming off really slow so that is why I am wondering if I am in Ketosis or am just doing a low carb diet. I am feeling frustrated.
Am I doing low carb or KETO?
You don’t have to be in ketosis to lose weight.
A slow weight loss may simply be a result of your own body’s rate of change. It’s a myth that keto or LCHF means rapid weight loss. It does that for some, but I think most have to just be very patient and let the process play out as it will.
No way for us to tell what diet you’re doing without sharing what your macros are on a daily basis - and, well, if you did that then you’d know if you were on a low carb diet or actual keto lol!
FWIW, I feel ya. I stopped tracking myself several months ago. I’ve been sticking mostly to stuff that I know is keto-friendly, but I still feel like I’m in ketosis, so that’s all that matters (clear thoughts, steady energy, excellent sleep, diminished hunger, etc.).
I think I will start tracking again soon, just for a tune-up. I don’t have a lot more weight to lose, but I have a little. Ugh. The thought of measuring and portioning things out does not excite me right now, though
This is a matter more of semantics than of science. You don’t have to be in ketosis to be fit and healthy nor do you have to be in ketosis to lose fat. Don’t worry too much about it. Just avoid sugar and starches and you’ll be fine!
It is a drag to track and not something anyone would want to do forever. I guess I will just keep on thinking I am doing kept. LOL Any progress is progress.
Signs of fat adaptation:
- pee a lot
- not as hungry
- blood pressure returns to normal
- decrease carb cravings
- increased mental clarity
- consistent all day energy
You can try fasting. If you are not already doing OMAD, extended fasting has been proven to increase fat loss more than just keto alone. If you can make it a full 24hours without eating and you are not physically suffering, then you are most likely able to go 2-3 days or longer. If you can fast without hunger and still have lots of energy, then you are definitely fat adapted.
The first half of this video is about why calorie counting is wrong… as well as how we get fat. The last 12 minutes or so is the actual part about fasting.
I’ve become pleasantly addicted to the tracking and data involved with Keto. There is no destination with Keto. It’s all about the journey and you can improve the journey with knowledge.
I did dry fasting once a week for 2 weeks, upped my calories(by about 200-400)and finally lost the last 7, im actually under goal now. Practicing OMAD.
Agree with the one meal a day idea even if it takes 2 hours to eat, got to keep the BMR up.
You do not need to be in a state of ketosis to lose weight. But the only way to definitively know if you are in ketosis is to test. Its as simple as that. I find tracking macros tedious and unnecessary. I just prick my finger, once a day in the morning. I make my dietary decisions based on that information.
If you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, the answer is equally simple: just stop eating. Fast for as long as you can, as often as you can. I have little patience and even less willpower. Fasting worked well for me since it only requires discipline.
