Almost 3 Weeks In

(Nancy) #1

I started Keto 2.5 weeks ago. The first week, I lost 8 lbs. The second week, I maintained. I have not weighed since. I am in ketosis every time I pee on a strip. 30/female/2 children/185 lbs to begin with, now 177 lbs. why am I not losing? NOT cheating at all and pretty active chasing my kids around.

Nancy, your initial weight loss was water weight. Now the weight will come off slowly. You may notice no movement on the scale but a change in your body composition and that’s where measuring is sometimes more useful than weight on a scale.

Older folks, women folk and those closer to their goal weight tend to lose more slowly. It’s a long game, enjoy all the other benefits of low carb eating along with weight loss.

Look for NSV (non scale victories). Do you feel better, sleep better, have more energy? Do your clothes fit better? Take measurements and pictures as you go, and remember we didnt gain it overnight, so we cant expect it to disappear that way either.

You lost 8lbs. You’re not going to lose every single week.

I guess all my other friends who are doing the diet have been losing every single week. Kind of discouraging

Keto is this easy (Keto for beloved noobs)

This is for Phase One - the starter phase. It’s still not complicated later, but this is the really easy to explain version which will help you no end.

  • Eat under 20g of carbs a day

  • Don’t worry about the scale. All it tells you is weight, it tells you nothing about body composition, even the “smart” scales.

  • Eat plenty of good food - fat and protein - while adhering to 20g/carbs/day. Don’t worry too much about macros and calories EXCEPT carbs. Keep them below 20g/day. (Prioritize the animal protein (i.e. not protein powder) - always start with protein in every meal, but don’t panic about it.) Your job is to get fat-adapted, so give your body the fuel you want it to use. Also, your appetite will vary - it’ll disappear, then it’ll come roaring back. Happens to most people, don’t sweat it.

  • ELECTROLYTES/SALT - KEEP THEM UP

  • Buy the meat you can afford - don’t stress about grass-fed, organic (con), etc… The worst meat is better than the best bread.

  • Fasting is a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. Works for lots, not for others. Don’t let tools tell you to use it before you’re fat-adapted and it makes sense.

  • This site has a search function (magnifying glass at the top of the page) and a newbies section - use them both, you’ll get a better variety of answers to your questions far more quickly that way. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS VERY USEFUL.[1]

That’s as difficult as it needs to be for a couple of months.

My good friend Terence (being friends with a Kiwi feels kinda dirty, but there you have it, keto makes for strange bedfellows) tells me this thing I have described above is called “dirty keto.” So yeah, do dirty keto, kids!

I lose about a lb a week, if I’m lucky but my joint pain is gone, skin looks better, I’m losing dress sizes, sleeping like a baby, waking without an attitude, lower appetite, food tastes better, no afternoon fatigue, etc. I’d gladly take all of these things over looking at a number on a scale. People say I look young or I look really healthy or just “good”. I used to think skinny was it but I realize now there are so many ways to feel attractive.

If you compare yourself to others you’re in for a let down.

I cannot stress this enough: buy a measuring tape and measure yourself weekly. You cannot rely on the scale. Your body composition could change completely, you could lose fat and gain lean muscle, and your scale might not move. Get a tape measure.

Hang in there… I’m completely new in this- but i do know look for those non scale victories! Health comes first and the pounds will just follow

We talk as though “weight” and “fat” were the same thing, but they aren’t. Most of our weight is in the form of internal organs, bone, and muscle, and that’s not weight we generally want to lose! In fact, when bone density is low, gaining weight in the form of stronger bones is an excellent thing to happen. The only weight we generally want to lose is the fat. Stop looking at the number on the scale, because the keto diet is so healthful that you can gain muscle and bone while losing fat. This means that your scale weight might not change, even as your clothes start to fall off. Would that be a problem, or does the number on your scale really mean that much to you?
