Aldi .my budget keto best friend

(Jo) #1

I love Aldi!!

Not only are the prices great, but I cut my shopping time way down too… and I don’t have to really face the bakery early in keto… such a big help!

Just a quick public service announcement :avocado::avocado::poultry_leg::poultry_leg:

Yeah, I’m a big fan, too. 24oz thick but bacon for just over $5, cheapest I’ve found Kerrygold butter, much better meat and cheese prices… and avocados were .39 last time I was there, I think.

The ladies at the checkout no longer bat an eye when I check out with a box full of bacon, eggs, and sausage. The other day I wasn’t buying bacon and the clerk said “what, no bacon today?”. :bacon:

They carry the Kerrygold cheese at the ones near me, always have it on hand for eggs and salads or just a nice slice,I recommend the Skellig variety

See also Lidl…

Great for salami, smoked salmon, chorizo, polish sausage, creme fraiche, really tasty little german sausages, cheap avocados - the discount supermarkets are great. There’s also a lot less rubbish in them to be honest - you’re not running the gauntlet of nearly as much crap. And their tills have nuts, seeds and water at them instead of cream eggs.
I love the German stores.

I love ALDI but I’ve never noticed the bacon. granted I haven’t been there since I started Keto. That’s a great price I’m gonna have to go check out.

BTW, you know that one of the best bacon sources for price and quality that I’ve found in the past was Cracker Barrel. They sell their bacon. I haven’t looked at the carbs or ingredients, however.

also if you are lucky enough to have a Lucky’s market near you they allegedly are going to start permanently carrying their in-house smoked “paleo” bacon which is not cured with any sugars and TWICE smoked. At $6.99/pound not as cheap as the ALDI 24 oz. But OH MY!

Thanks for the reminder!! I find Aldi to be at least 30% cheaper than Walmart ona lot of things. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Aldi.

They are good on a lot of stuff but I found their meat is waaaaaay too high. I always go to local store chains for my meat. In Metro Atlanta it’s Food Depot

(Robert Hollinger) #8

their special buys on mean are usually pretty good. I got 4 pounds of grass fed ground beef for I think $15

(Sophie) #9

How I wish Lidl would hurry up and get their stores built in the US! It makes Aldis behave.

(Stan Brooks) #10

While at the local store the ground beef (who cares what it ate) goes for about 5 pnds for 7 bucks.

(Mike W.) #11

They have 70/30 ground beef in 5lb packs. Usually $2.29/lb

#12

I love Dubliner, even more awesome with a slice of Kerrygold butter on top of the cheese.

#13

They also have large packs of 75/25% beef patties in the freezer.

raises hand…
Somewhat ironic to use that phrase on a forum that’s literally about eating the correct foods to be healthy

(Stan Brooks) #15

I know right? But by the time I am buying it I don’t think it matters if the cow has a healthy heart or not :yum::yum:

I’m going back to Aldi now that they take AMEX. (My AMEX gives me a rebate on grocery spending).

I’ll be honest - I think Lidl has better quality food than Aldi. Here in the UK they carry plenty of organic and fair trade goods and their vegetables are really good and way cheaper than other supermarkets.
The thing is - they don’t do ‘just in time’ ordering. I lived across the road from one for a while and shopped there a lot. If you go late on in the day they might be out of a lot of things - they get a daily delivery of fresh stuff and if it’s sold out, it’s tough luck. I suspect that’s the secret of their lower prices - they don’t throw a load of stuff away.
Everything the big stores throw away doesn’t hit their bottom line - it hits ours - we pay for them to always have everything in stock with the higher prices we pay for everything in store.
So I think there’s an argument to be made that the discounters are more environmentally friendly.

(Stan Brooks) #18

Just a note there has never been any study show that organic is better. Fact of the matter it make be worst.

Fair trade is a marketing phase which may mean something or may not but does not speak to the quality of the food.

(Olivia) #19

You have to factor in the difference between US organic and EU organic, which tends to have stricter regulations, rules and random testing of farms.

(Robert Hollinger) #20

Not sure where you are coming from but ground beef around here is normally $5 per pound. and it matters what it ate because that’s theoretically an extra source of Omega 3s…so if I can get grass fed for about the same price…
