A little confused

(Jean) #1

I have been on keto for 8 weeks and down about 36 lbs .i am happy with this . Over the last couple weeks really no weight change but doing more bike and walking on treadmill .i keep calories around 1600 calories and keep carbs to about 15 or less never over 20. I measured my waist and stomach and no change but my pants fit better over the last couple weeks and was hoping my chest would shrink to have shirts fit better . I am 6ft2 inch’s and now 284 lbs

Did you measure your hips? If your pants are fitting better your proportions may have changed or you may have lost some inches in your hips. Or you are not bloated and were before!

What sort of fit issue do you have with shirts? I’m a costume designer, clothing bodies of all shapes and sizes is my job!

I never heard of men measuring hips. Never even thought of it . I used to wear 3xlt shirts . I am now 2xlt in button upmahier but T-shirt ad golf shirts are a little tight over my chest but room over the belly.

Jean I think you’re doing great! 18 pounds lost per month is fantastic, even if you haven’t lost much in the past few weeks.

I wouldn’t say that you really need to change anything, but it wouldn’t hurt to make sure your daily eating window is fairly small. The less meals we eat, the more time our insulin levels stay low and this gives us more opportunity to burn fat.

Also try not to snack and if you are using artificial sweeteners, consider giving them up or limiting them as much as you can.

Contrary to the conventional wisdom, weight loss is not about counting calories. You need to try and change your mind set. I suggest you read Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes to learn why calorie counting just doesn’t make sense.

Keeping your carbs low is great but combined with calorie counting, you can and likely will undermine your efforts. Dr. Jason Fung makes some really good arguments on this topic.

Thanks , I have my calculator says 1799 , I do Gia little high on protein . I don’t like avocado but have been eating a lot of cauliflower and making a mash with butter and cream and someone said mashing makes more carbs but still under 20. I usually do a 12-14 hour IF

Are you buying clothes from a big and tall manufacturer? They tend to cut for larger bellies which could be why you’re finding the proportions are wrong. At 6’2" do you need long shirts? I haven’t gone to long shirts for actors under 6’5" but you may be long waisted.

You may want to try on some xxl shirts at places like kohls and target and Walmart. Get a feel for proportions in mens straight size clothing. Since you’ve been wearing big sizes.

I have sort of been trying to eat keto for the last week just avoiding carbs. I have a few questions I have not found the answer to:

  1. I Have thickened my sauces with corn starch. Is that a NONO. 1 TBS has 7 carbs so the dish I made is for 3 so 2 carbs each. Why would that be a bad thing.

(jessie) #9

Oops continued:
2. why do some cookbooks say No Cheese?
3. If I do have one drink of orange juice does that put me back to the beginning.

I find tall fit looser, but I am getting a few T-shirt’s at Walmart’s and golf shirts and they fit but again a little tight in the chest but enough room in the belly. I am longer in waist and I live in Canada somthe Walmart here is not as good , don’t like us target and kohl’s is expensive when I go to the us. Those stores are 2 hours away

If you eat too many carbs, which a glass of Oj has way too many carbs, it does put you back at the beginning. I wouldn’t sweat the cornstarch too much. I don’t use it but if it fits in your 20 carbs that is a choice you are making.

This post somehow totally fits the title. :joy::face_with_monocle:

(jessie) #13

hmmm are you telling me it doesn’t ? It was only my 2nd post to this site. Sorry if I posted incorrectly and I guess I should do more reading before asking any questions here.

(The amazing autoimmune 🦄) #14

Sorry that was a reply to @jt2018 whose post was a total non sequitor. Therefore ironically reinforcing the thread title in a completely different way.

If you look in the upper right hand corner it should tell you who the poster is responding to. If nobody shows up in the corner then it should be a response to the thread as a whole.

Also cheese is a total Keto food, I eat it all the time.

I don’t think there’s a problem here.
You have lost 4 and a half pounds a week for the last 8 weeks. Your body cannot continue to do that and it is now taking a much needed and necessary break from losing weight. Keep doing what you’re doing because it obviously is working.

(Rob Grantham) #16

Way to go jean! Just keep doing what you’re doing. Once your body starts to ramp up fat adaptation your fat burning should really start to speed up. Your body has changed metabolic pathways. This is no small feat.

(Yvonne Petross) #17

At 6’2" and only eating 1600 calories you may need to up your calories and fats. I’m a foot shorter, and female, and get over 1600, closer to 1800. Calorie restriction will damage metabolism.
For myself, cornstarch is a strict NO because it is corn and inflammatory. I’m pretty strict and not a IIFYM type. In that light, yes, a drink of orange juice is also bad. The sugar content might/will set off cravings again. Who needs that?

(Jean) #18

My macros calculator says 1796calories ,protein at 110g and fats at140g. For me it’s keeping myproteins down a bit and raising fats. I don’t like avocado and nuts. I cook with coconut oil or butter . Love cauliflower mash but might try nodairy for a while(exceptbutter). Thanks for everything positive just looking for high fat foods( that are also low protein

Unless you’re very hungry a lot and not satisfied after your meals you shouldn’t worry about calorie restriction lowering your metabolism. First of all, once we are fat adapted we are supposed to cut back the fat a bit to allow our bodies to use our body fat instead. That DOES equate to lower calories than a one would eat if one was not trying to lose weight. The difference with keto isn’t that your calories don’t go down, but that you don’t feel hungry all the time when they do. It affects our satiety signals such that once we are fat adapted (about 6-8 weeks in) we just don’t want to eat as much.

It’s perfectly normal for men losing weight on keto to be around 1800 or even considerably lower, and I’ve seen lots of women here eating at sub 1000 calories all the way through until they near their goal and begin to get hungrier.

Also, everyone’s metabolism is different so we shouldn’t obsess over what some online calculator tells us is the “good” number of calories for our size. When I was losing weight I was eating around 900-1000 calories per day and that was fine for about a year. Now I eat between 1050 and 1250 most days and that’s all my body usually wants. But some days I want much less and have 700ish and some days I want way more and get closer to 2000.

If you are doing keto correctly, and you don’t have issues with detecting satiety or stuffing yourself way past it, then you can just trust your body to tell you when you’ve had enough.

Also, your weight loss is absolutely excellent and your macros look spot on so I’d say you are probably doing everything right. Just keeps going, you’re doing great!
