50 yrs old Three weeks in- a bit discouraged

Is it the actual ketosis level, or the things you (don’t) do to get there that gives the relief?

(mole person) #43

Initially I thought it might just be a fat threshold level but now I’m convinced it’s something else because my weight has been fairly stable at my low for a while now. Ketosis level makes the best sense to me since exactly what else I’ve been doing or not doing has been more variable.

In the past it has been bunches of extra carbs from HWC, nuts, and dark chocolate, but lately it’s been a Mars bar at night after an otherwise good OMAD day. :pensive:

Yeah, this is pretty much what I mean - is the ketosis level the driver, is is it just an indicator needle that shows you’re doing (or not doing) stuff that’s slowing things down?

I’ll have to look this up to find where I read it, but I did once read that ketosis helps with hot flashes because in women glucose transport to the brain gets all tied up with estrogen transport. The brain in menopausal women goes into some crisis on detecting too little glucose and sets off some pathway that pumps more in but also messes with thermoregulation. Ketones going into the brain instead of just glucose bypasses this crisis.

I’ve got to find the article or whatever it was. I’m getting something wrong here for sure since it doesn’t make a lot of sense and it did when i read it.

I wasn’t too far off. This has also been found in humans, but I like this synopsis best of the ones I’ve just viewed.

An emerging model based on rat studies suggests that menopausal hot flashes result from transient inadequacies in central nervous system glucose transport… The decline in glucose delivery to the brain is a secondary result of diminished estrogen-stimulation of glucose transporter production. With fewer glucose transporter molecules available to maintain adequate glucose transport, the brain receives less glucose. This is further compounded under physiological conditions such as fasting, in which less glucose is available for transport. The end result is a transient alteration in available glucose to brain neurons… In this paradigm, the hot flash is viewed as a counter-regulatory attempt to increase blood flow and subsequent delivery of glucose to the brain.

Don’t need be discouraged it take so time everyone is here to help you, you can do this!

Works for people with normal or early diabetes, doesn’t work for people with metabolic damage and type 2 diabetes.
For normies (for weight loss) its great apparently according to the 5:2 forum.
I tried it, diabetic type 2, did nothing at all for me. Not a gram of weight loss.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #50

It makes sense, and the brain can do very well on β-hydroxybutyrate instead of glucose. Better, sometimes.

This is assuring
Thanks for mentioning this
I am on the keto and IF for one month and lose only 4 lb
Would you mind telling me how much weight did u lose after five months?
Thanks
So happy I found this forum:rose:

I lost 23 pounds and am now at maintenance. I found that my appetite cycles between being very hungry and not really hungry. I’m also constantly tweaking the diet as I go along. One mistake I was making at first was not reading labels. I pretty much now only eat real foods without labels. You mention IF after only a month. Are you eating enough? Do you feel satisfied with the amount you are eating? There is no need to go hungry on keto.

Update- I am now 4 months in- things are fantastic- I was 175 to start - last weigh in 158 - so nearly 20 lbs. I won’t do maintenance until I am at the most 142-145. I feel fantastic- clothes fit again and this is a lifestyle I continue to do forever
