5 pound gain in 4 days

(Laura Blanton) #1

Hi Everyone, I’m new here. I started keto on 12/4/17 at 193 pounds. I’m 5’4". I strictly stay under 10g net carbs a day, not sure of total carbs off the top of my head but under 25g. I take a lot of vitamins and supplements like B12 complete, D, potassium, magnesium, biotin, Apple cider vinegar, multi vitamin, cranberry tablet (history of kidney stone problems), and a digestive enzyme. On average, I drink 70oz of sparkling water (Wal-Mart clear American with 0 cal sweetened with aspartame) a day and usually 16-20oz coffee with 2 TB heavy whipping cream and stevia to sweeten (5 squirts for 20oz). I don’t eat food for breakfast, just the coffee which I generally have around 11am. I eat lunch around 2pm and the most frequent meal is shredded pork with no carbs (usually 6oz), no carb pork rinds (1.5 to 2 oz), 2 wedges of Laughing Cow cheese, and no sugar bbq (2g net carbs for 2 TB). Dinner is between 5-7pm and is most frequently 2 butter fried eggs and 4 strips of zero carb thick cut bacon (I usually can’t finish the eggs, sick feeling and full). I salt (pinch or 2 of Himalayan pink salt) on lunch and dinner, plus the chocolate is salted. I have 1 serving of Lilly’s dark chocolate a day, somewhere between lunch and bed. I’ve had keto connect fudge brownies but just made a batch once in 5 weeks and that batch lasted me 6 days, each brownie being about 2.5 total carbs. My typical fasting window is from 8pm to 11am so 15 hours and consuming calories is 9 hours.

No, what I would call keto flu, but my electrolytes are in check so I didn’t expect it too heavily. I do have daily headaches but have had those for years so no change. I’m tired but 30 minutes or so after I eat I’m almost catatonic. Like so tired I sometimes cannot physically keep my eyes open and that lasts for an hour then is better. It’s like I’ve eaten pounds of sugar and the awful crash that comes after but this is more intense. I have less than no energy but expected that. The heavy crash, like a huge sugar crash, after every single meal I did not expect and it is concerning considering my next issue. The crash feeling started along the same time as my next issue.

I was losing weight at a slow but steady pace. At week 4, I was down to 181, so a 12 pound drop, likely mostly water weight coming from likely 300 to 500g carbs a day to under 10g net a day. For what seems like no reason with no change in diet or fluid intake, I jumped up 4 pounds in a 3 day period. The next day, up another 1 pound and I feel like a water balloon if that makes sense. My rings are crazy tight every morning and it does go away during the day. I’ve had a hysterectomy so it isn’t water retention due to a period. After that, I put my scale away as it felt like a crushing defeat so seeing that isn’t helpful for me. I’m an obsessive weigher, sometimes I’d jump on 5-8 times a day so I’m breaking that andx put it away. I will now only weigh myself once a month.

What might cause such a dramatic weight gain in 4 days? A pound day to day is a normal flux for me but 5 in 4 days and it staying up is very abnormal. Any ideas? Thanks!!

The tired after you eat and what sounds like water retention sound like food sensitivities to me. The ones I usually check first are artificial sweeteners. Even something that never affected you before can affect you differently now that you are switching your body so much inside.

Thank you, I’ll try and cut that for a couple weeks and see if that’s it.

I hope you figure it out! When you feel good on Keto, it is the BEST, so not feeling great when you are trying to do something good for yourself is an extra super drag. You are still actually kind of early days so keep at it, keep tweaking your foods and find what makes you feel great. I find the keto way of eating a process, not a place you arrive and stay put at. Let us know how you do.

Have you looked at how many carbs you are getting in your supplements? I had a UTI and was taking a bunch of supplements and together they knocked me out of ketosis (I did not care since the UTI was also gone).

I agree about the artificial sugar and possibly the chocolate. I have been doing this for 8 months and have had chocolate once and realized I do not like dark chocolate so did not bother again. I do add a sprinkle of cocoa powder to my coffee, that is not sweetened and I do not believe has carbs. No answer on the water weight other than check your blood pressure and magnesium/potassium levels and maybe have some blood run with your doctor. I tend to get much more bloated in the evenings after I eat but it is only my waist, not my hands and it is gone by the morning.

You may want to focus more on food quality, such as real unprocessed cheese instead of laughing cow, it may be a trace ingredient that is a problem

Maybe cut out all supplements except what you absolutely need and then add them back one by one. Some brands have extra ingredients which may be another problem

I don’t believe the vitamins have any carbs at all, at least none listed. But…I went and scrutinized everything. The pork rinds by Mac say zero carbs but actually list sugar and artificial sweeteners, garlic and onion powder in some of the flavored kinds I’ve been eating. The salt and pepper pork skins have mattodextrin, garlic and onion powder, and torula years. Hidden carbs everywhere even though all the Mac lables say zero carbs. The red hot pork skins say zero carbs but have dextrose, soy protein, food starch, dehydrated garlic, and SUGAR! How can it be zero carbs but have sugar, even if it is the 8th ingredient?? Thanks for the help. I bet I’ve been getting way more carbs than I thought. No more last label reading, every single ingredient must be read.

Because the amount of sugar is negligible, and not required to be listed because it’s under .5g. Doubt that is your issue here.

@PrimalBrian Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong?

(Laura Blanton) #10

@KidKeto I’m drinking about 70oz a day in water then about 20oz from other fluids like coffee. More than 90oz of fluid a day usually makes me feel pretty sick but I could try and slowly move that up and see what happens. I eat salt with all meals right now.

How old are you? Can it be cycle related? I retain 3 pounds when I ovulate and 5 pounds the week of my period.

#12

No. Impossible, per her original post. (I had the same thought too.).

Still giving it some thought.

The only thing that jumps out at me is that you seem pretty high on the artificial sweetener each day. I wonder if that’s messing with your system in some way. I’d try and knock those down/out and give it a few weeks.

(Jessica) #14

Ah. I read it a few times hunting for that and completely missed that detail!

(Laura Blanton) #15

@cadori No, that’s not an issue for me, hysterectomy.

(Laura Blanton) #16

@PrimalBrian I think that may be it. I think it is spiking my blood sugar. I’m going to cut it in half and see what happens. Thanks so much.

(Donna ) #17

Yes, I’d cut the artificial sweetners and the pork rinds (unless you can find some that don’t have added sugars or msg) and possibly the BBQ sauce.

Try whole foods and not packaged/prepared stuff. I know it’s a lot more work, though. Can you make and freeze your food for the week on the weekend?

Hope you start feeling better soon!

#18

Some people can’t keto with milk products and cheese… And have to be careful with the artificial sweeteners.

#19

I would check online to make sure. I know the ones I get have some. I am sure it is only 2gs or so but if you have enough it is cumulative

HI…just a thought, maybe changing this up?

For example

  1. eat an hour later…eating you last meal at 6pm
Then ur getting a 18 hour fasting window

For me it made all the difference in the world! I never eat past 6pm …

Good luck
