46h fast ended slightly early

(Ethan) #1

I was doing my first 48h fast and ended it a little early (2 hours early) because I had company, but also because my blood sugar dropped to 63. I know from Fasting Talk that this is not dangerous when you are ketogenic, especially with my ketones at 4.8! However, I felt a bit off and shaky/panicky, so I ended it. Next week, I am going to try to power through the shaky feeling with bone broth on my way to 72 hours. I go to the farm tomorrow.

Has anybody else had the shakes and anxiety with low sugar on an extended fast?

I had it happen once and I did exactly what you did. I think it was a shock to the system, but I have never had it happen again.

First, congratulations for your 46 hours fast. If I remember correctly, 24h was your record until now. That’s great.

For the shakes, it happened to me too once and like @irishred, it was the only time. But I don’t think you should power through it if it happens to you again. It’s a signal from your body that it’s time to stop the fast and you should always listen to your body.

This is interesting, Ethan (the BS level of 63). I was into a 24+ period of not eating (unintentional), and tested my BS on a whim and it was 58 (I felt fine). The T1 diabetic I know would hit 60 and be in a complete shake/panic and have to eat something. It’s interesting how relative blood sugars (and our perceptions of them) can be when you’re ketogenic vs. a sugar burner.
