30g Carbs/Day - Too many?

(Mendy) #1

Hi,
I have a quick question. I’m using the keto app and it’s fantastic. I’m staying in moderate ketosis and eating 30g carbs a day. Is this too many carbs?
Before keto I averaged 250 to 350g carbs per day for about 8yrs. (Embarrassing to type that)
So I’m thinking 30g of carbs per day is pretty good considering. I’ve enclosed screenshots of what today looks like.

Thank you

Personally, I think between 20 and 40 carbs is good for nutritional ketosis for me. I lean toward 20 to maximize weight lose but I know 40 doesn’t kick me out. So it depends what you are looking to get out of keto and how long you are willing to wait for it.

You can try it and if you don’t see the results you are looking for, you can always go lower.

No need to be embarrased. We’ve been given bad advice all our lives and the amount of carbs you were eating is not uncommon.

Thank you. I need to lose 25-30lbs and would like to do so in 2 months. I know that seems like kind of a lot but would be happy with 20 pound weight loss in two months :slightly_smiling_face:
I should add I wasn’t taught wrong my entire life. I was big into bodybuilding for many years and I know what’s right and what’s not. Unfortunately I love LOVE carbs and completely disregarded the way I should be eating. (Also embarrassing) lol

My cholesterol is off the charts and I refuse to take statins so I’m hoping with the weight-loss will come better cholesterol levels

There are Net Carbs versus Total Carbs. It should amount to the same amount of food at the end of the day but the numbers are different.

Net Carbs is Total Carbs minus Fiber.

The recommend amounts are 20g Net Carbs, especially for the first few weeks. Most people could have more but it’s best to target 20…

Or you can use Total Carbs (in the book “The Art and Science of low-carb Performance” the recommendation is 50g Total Carbs.

Sorry about the confusion but it should amount to about the same amount of food.

Loves Carbs? Every pizza place within a 15 mile radius knows my on a first name basis - … I had a pizza brain.

But on keto your taste changes! Once you have a few nice low-carb meals your body will want more of those. I have no trouble saying no to carbs. You should also be fine. Look forward to all the good stuff we were previously avoiding. I reckon we gain more options than we lose.

The more calories you burn by increased activity, including exercise, the less time a given amount of glucose will spend in your blood stream because there are millions of muscle cells eager to absorb that energy. If you are sedentary you may need to stay with the lowest amount of carbs. If you are very active may be more carbs will have less impact than fewer carbs in a sedentary person.

The next thing I’m going to do is go to the basement, get on my Airdyne, and burn through about 500 calories, about 2 1/2 times the energy in the 50 or less grams of carbs we are discussing.

Your reckoning for losing 25-30 pounds in just two months seems a bit off at 30 net carbs. You will go into ketosis and lose some weight at 30-net but I don’t think it will happen in two months. Losing a healthy 10-15 pounds per month is optimistic at any level of eating – especially for women.

You might want to consider 20-net or 30-total plus give yourself 3 months. And I would also question the need for the protein shakes and the almond crackers are nearly half you daily carbs.

I applaud your effort but question you methods considering the goals you have in mind.

Sorry for the newbie question, but what is that app called you are using?

(Mendy) #9

It’s in the Apple Store and it’s called keto app
:slightly_smiling_face:

:sob: Don’t tell me that. You’re not very gentle Ben. Lol
I’m practically dying on 30 g of carbs a day. The only happiness are those horrible little almond crackers and a protein shake.
I will take your advice and cut out some of the crackers and maybe only have a chocolate protein shake every couple of days. Thank you for responding

Keto is this easy (Keto for beloved noobs)

This is for Phase One - the starter phase. It’s still not complicated later, but this is the really easy to explain version which will help you no end.

  • Eat under 20g of carbs a day

  • Don’t worry about the scale

  • Eat plenty of good food - fat and protein - rather than shakes and protein potions, while adhering to 20g/carbs/day. Don’t worry too much about macros and calories EXCEPT carbs. Keep them below 20g/day. (Prioritize the protein - always start with protein in every meal, but don’t panic about it.) Your job is to get fat-adapted, so give your body the fuel you want it to use. Also, your appetite will vary - it’ll disappear, then it’ll come roaring back. Happens to most people, don’t sweat it.

  • ELECTROLYTES/SALT - KEEP THEM UP

  • Buy the meat you can afford - don’t stress about grass-fed, organic (con), etc… The worst meat is better than the best bread.

  • This site has a search function (magnifying glass at the top of the page) and a newbies section - use them both, you’ll get a better variety of answers to your questions far more quickly that way. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS VERY USEFUL.[1]

That’s as difficult as it needs to be for a couple of months.

My good friend Terence (being friends with a Kiwi feels kinda dirty, but there you have it, keto makes for strange bedfellows) tells me this thing I have described above is called “dirty keto.” So yeah, do dirty keto, kids!

Thank you for the detailed response. “The worst meat is better than the best bread.” Nice, I like that.
My husband and dad did the keto the past two months and they both reached their goal of a 25 pound weight loss. So now it’s my turn because I can’t have them out do me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was REALLY tempted to go with “The wurst meat” but decided I needed to be obvious, not clever

You are likely to find something better than just weight loss if you stick to it. I found energy, most of my “normal” body inflammation is gone, I have no cravings for carbs, I found better patience, clearer thinking and I have control (for the first time in my life) of exactly what I eat and how much of it I eat.

Keto is about healing and changing your hormonal behavior for the better. Weight loss just happens to be a very positive side effect.

Having said that, take your time losing the 30 lbs and enjoy the NSVs. I’ve heard of men dropping 10 lbs a month or more but women tend to lose weight more slowly. Plus, the less you have to lose, the slower the process usually is.

I would cut out your hot cocoa k cup …you are drinking 12 carbs.

(Tina Emmons) #16

If I don’t, someone will…tell you not to compete with men! Many ladies here will tell you it can be waaaaay slower for them. I would imagine you may need to add fasting to reach that hefty goal. I had 60 pounds to lose when I went full keto and started fasting last January and I still have 60 pounds to lose. I reversed IR but no weight loss. I’m now on a 4:3 plan trying to make something snap. Welcome tho. These peeps are a great support!

Truth doesn’t always have to hurt and more often the truth is what you need. Gentle or not.

Approach this way of eating with optimism but bridle it back. Be realistic with your goals. You’re still excited and that’s great.

But educate yourself (as you are doing here) as to the roadblocks, stumbling blocks and even the pratfalls of changing a lifestyle. If you know what more to expect ahead, the better able you will be to hurdle these situations.

Hunger is an obstacle that most often has to be weathered rather than defeated. As they say, hunger comes in waves – so do temptations. See and know them for what they are – waves and temptations. Find coping strategies such as forums, books, TV, video games, long complex movies, long walks, working out, etc. But make sure these coping strategies are ready at hand for when the unseen obstacle strikes.

And, I am an Extended Faster, but you’re in it a bit early to consider Intermittent Fasting and Extended Fasting. But those are the keys to rapid weight loss.

Keep feeding this new lifestyle with education – nothing tastes better to the brain than learning.

Your ambitious goal implies you would drop the cocoa k cup and the crackers carbs for broccoli and spinach carbs (more nutrient dense and less insulin spiking carbs).

Also, I would never believe the labels of manufactured foods (that have a business motivation for a specific outcome) They can justify all sorts of things - for example, if the crackers spike your insulin just like 50 grams of sugar (because they made something natural into a dried powder and baked it), they don’t have to report that. They just have to say it is made of almonds so has almond carb counts.
