14 day of 21 day fast. blood sugar question

#1

Hey there!

New to the forum, glad to have found it. I am a 32 year old male. I have been doing 1 or 2 extended fasts a year for 2-3 years - anywhere from 5-14 days. I try and couple this with intermittent fasting, that said my lifestyle can be hectic and sometimes I slip. Well we recently had a baby, and i realized I was now one of the heaviest I have been. It snuck up on me…or I ignored it. I havent had any real problems fasting, and I tend to do longer fasts if my weight or health seems to concern me. I decided I wanted to do another fast, possible to be my longest to date.

So I started my fast weighing in at 181lbs. I was getting into ketosis by the 2nd day - by the 4th I was in a good moderate-large level of ketosis (based on test stips). I tested my blood sugar and it was mid 80s for the first 2 days then it began to go down settling around 78. Now in the past, especially my first extended fast i regularly got my blood sugar down into the mid to low 60s. This time was looking different by day 10. I decided to take my blood sugar, and it was 103, then later 95. It has stayed around 100 for the past 4 days. This hasn’t happened before and I’m worried maybe I may causing a problem or this could be my body’s reaction to this. I am not sure. I feel fine otherwise, I have been drinking a good bit of water with a little salt here and there (should probably be taking more). I actually did a bunch of yard work today - other than alittle fatigue, no real issues other than odd blood sugar and some dry patches of skin.

Also I am now 158 (started at 181lbs).

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Should I go ahead and break the fast a week early?

Also, I usually dont have many bowel movements on my fasts. maybe 1-4 over a 10 day period. This time is also different in that after the 10th day I have been having little still greasy but more “normal looking” BM’s pretty much everyday, and the smell isn’t as different (hope thats not TMI).

Am I burning muscle by chance? i do feel like i have more belly and midsection fat than I did the first time extended fast.

I am just trying to figure it out so I can decide when to start re-feeding.

Any and all input appreciated!

Thanks for reading and all your help!

Lots of interesting reading if you search on fasting glucose.

Great job @crabman

I really feel inspired by you. Would you be interested to some kinda interview on my new blog about keto.

Let me know.

I’m going to put those 2 bits of information together and theorize that you’re releasing fat at an accelerated rate, which provides a source of glucose and ketones on a fast when you’re insulin drops below threshold. If you’ve collected a lot of visceral fat, I’ve found the effect to be most noticeable.
