Zero-carbers, what do you eat to break your 72-hour fasts?

The reason I ask is because I just finished my first 72-hour fast yesterday and broke it at 1:30 pm by eating a 12-ounce chuck steak and some ghee. I was stuffed even though it was probably only about 900 calories. I also drank a bottle of Zero vitamin water. I was so fatigued about 2 hours later that I could hardly take more than a few steps. (I normally walk a lot, 2-3 times a week run/walk, and play tennis, so I’m pretty active.) The fatigue lasted until this morning. Twelve hours later I still felt stuffed. It disrupted my sleep. I wonder if I just ate too much to break my fast, too much protein, too much fat, Zero water, that made me so fatigued. How do you usually break you 72-hour fast?

I took some really great advice from @amber. After a fast of more than one week, I broke it with bone broth, and then waited a bit, followed by bits of beef that was cooked in the bone broth. The bone broth was extra fatty, by the way…not a lean broth.

I felt incredibly great!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try that next time.

You should never break a fast with red meat. It’s too hard on your digestive system. Bone broth and eggs are a good start for your first meal. Second meal some veggies, cheese, good fats, maybe a small about of chicken. Then attempt your red meat. 12 ounce steak is actually a lot right after a 72 hour fast. Your body has to get use to whole foods again

This is the zero-carb category, so she was looking for animal food suggestions. (And the post is from last summer, so I’m sure she is fine!)

Meat-only meals digest fully in about an hour, whereas vegetables can take several hours, so meat is actually more digestible than vegetables. The key to refeeding after a fast is smaller meals.
