@TimHolmes there are loads of free videos on You Tube, Yoga with Adrienne is a really good one.

I use an app called Doyouyoga which has loads of free content you can try too, and if you like it the paid option is really great.

Whichever you opt for, be gentle with yourself and don’t feel bad if you struggle as there’s not many of us who can bend the way the teachers do in the videos. Adapt the poses as you need to and if something hurts, ease up.

I like Ashtanga Yoga. It has several levels and a fundamental idea is to synchronise movement and breath. There is no aim of a perfect pose, we should listen to our bodies and do what we can on that day and time. But all the time we are learning about our bodies and what they need, and we also learn to develop the postures.

Combining breath and movement allows a peace of mind and inner quiet (something about the Vagus nerve I think). Listening to one’s calm rythmical breathing is very useful. When the breath becomes too fast or we hold our breath it’s a good sign we’re trying too hard!!

Ashtanga has a set sequence of postures, so once you get used to it, it’s easy to do at home without any prompting from a teacher or YouTube!

https://www.youtube.com/user/YogaGoa is a nice set of Ashtanga videos.

I’ll post my favourite beginner sequences when I get off this train.

Tim, youtube.com has tons of yoga instruction vids… You might want to check out jessicasmithtv channel, she has a lot of different workouts not just yoga, often teams up with MFP to do a series, all are free. Lots of Rodney Yee videos over there too. Once you get started you can move up to Rodney’s. I love his videos.

All the best finding a yoga program/ style you like, they do vary.

I like Jessamyn Stanley if you’re just starting out and want to watch a bigger person doing yoga. She’s down to earth and proves anyone can do yoga. Check her out:

I go to yoga in a studio several times a week and it can be very intimidating at first no matter your age, size, or fitness level. My yoga teacher is 5 ft and weighs like 100 pounds, but she is great because she reminds us that the actual practice of yoga is the breathing and the mental part, not the poses and the body stuff. It is about linking breathe to movement and focusing on your breath. Find a few super easy poses to try like childs pose or corpse pose and when in doubt do one of those. A good idea is to Google beginner yoga poses even before you try to start to become familiar with them. Give it a try you will love it!

Yoga for Big Guys with Mike Fecht from Yoga for Men. Mike has worked with guys of all body types, including NFL linemen, and has a way with making the practice accessible to all kinds of people, male and female, of varying body types.

Why Yoga specifically? There are many non impact stretching and body weight programs you can do. It seems a bit limiting to do yoga which is very hard to learn.

Check out Athlean-X with his 7.3M subscribers.

There’s a whole section on flexibility exercises in the Navy SEAL Physical Fitness Guide

This is just 20 minutes, slow, graceful - lots of Sanskrit and a chant. If chanting in Sanskrit isn’t your thing don’t despair just skip it next time!

and this one taking 40 minutes. x x
