This is really easy. You just have to use a cheap little laser thermometer to check that your pan is up around 550 F to start, and stir continuously from start to finish. As I’m finding, there are TONS of places to get high quality green coffee beans for much cheaper than specialty roasted beans, or grinds…
Hey Micheal, some people use popcorn poppers too… But I have found the cast iron skillet to work so well, I cant see a big reason to use anything else for the time being
I posted the first 3 links just to show folks that there are purpose-made utensils available for those who might like to try this small-scale, but either don’t have a BBQ option and/or want more control over the process than an open skillet. Googling/DuckDucking will turn up more such devices.
I posted the last 2 links, especially the last, to show the roasting options available. Varying the temp and time of roasting yields very different coffee results. You need precise control over the process to accomplish that. Sure, if all you want is a dark or very dark roast, that’s pretty easy. But if you want something less, that’s more challenging.
Anyway, Chris, I’m glad you’re having fun with this and getting something you like to drink! I did the same for many years with beer. Although I never tried malting barley, which is a process even more fiddly than roasting coffee.
I have to say though, that cheapie Coleman BBQ’er of ours has gotten SO much use in the last 3 years… Tons of old school BBQ’s… Now, only a few, but it gets used even more, as a searing bed for all of our Sous Vid’e meats… and now, roasting coffee too Its getting pretty worn out. Starter doesn’t work, and the metal underneath is about to burn through… So I’m just trying to make it last through Winter, at which point I will break out the brand new one we have stored in our garage
I guess some people just cant use a BBQ’er in an apartment or something… But that would just kill me ! I probably use our BBQ’er 3 or 4 times a week !
I’ve been roasting my own coffee for about a year and a half.
I started using a popcorn popper, but got tired of only being able to do a small amount at a time.
So, I improvised.
I took an old double-boiler inner pot (with holes) that my wife wasn’t using, and I dump a pound of beans in there at the same time. It takes about 20-30 minutes to roast, depending on how dark I make it. Usually, I stop shortly after first crack.
I’ll upload a picture, or two.
Hey Jeff, those look great ! But about the roasting… In the oven ? Stove top ? Do you have to stir them ?
BTW, I looked at Sweet Marias too. They have great reviews and ratings. Plus a great selection…
I use the side burner of the grill.
I hold the large dowel that is attached to the bowl on either side, and I just rock it back and forth and around and around … no stirring as I keep the beans moving by keeping the bowl moving.
I used Dean’s Beans for a while, but, their selection is pretty limited.
One good thing about Sweet Maria’s is that they have a pretty good turnover. I order 10 1-lb bags about every two months, and the selection is always slightly different. So, I know the beans are fresh.
One bad thing about Sweet Maria’s is that they have a pretty good turnover. If you find one you like, you may not be able to reorder.
This is the one I liked the most … but, have only been able to order it once.
Yea, I’m starting to think the best coffee is generally from Africa…
I have come to that conclusion myself.
I used to do my own beer. Mostly english ales, porters and stouts. I was told by experts that my results were outstanding. I can’t even begin to think about drinking a Beer or Ale ever again. I imagine myself with a heck of a tummy ache.
Oh well, things I was good at don’t count anymore. Beer, Ale, Cheese Cake.
I still have cheesecake. We made sous vide cheesecake in small containers a few years ago, for Christmas. If you keep them relatively small, the carb hit, even for 100% not keto, is not that bad.
Beers, I can’t have. They are the best way to get obese and pickle your liver.
I like pickles. Let’s call this something else. Just saying LOL.
