Xylos/Sin-Free Sugar

(Ashley Haddock) #1

My mom sent me this link today asking about this sweetener for my dad. The main ingredient is xylos. After googling I couldn’t find out a whole lot about it and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it? At first I thought she meant xylitol but that’s not it.

I see several red flags, including the fact that they are categorizing “Glucose” as a “Natural Fiber”. Uh…WAT?

And I have no idea what “Fucose” is, but given that it’s sandwiched between “Glucose” and “Galactose” which are both sugars, I’m guessing it’s either another sugar I’ve never heard of, or they’ve misspelled “Fructose”.

One way or another, I’d probably pass on this one. I’d be willing to bet it’s primarily erythritol, in which case, might as well use Truvia or Swerve.

Yeah the natural fiber/glucose thing made me scratch my head too. Plus it’s more expensive than what I use (Pyure) so I told her it’s probably not worth it but I’d look into it.

I found this:

Sin-Free sugar contains Xylose (from wood), Erythritol (fruits and fermented foods) and Brown Algae Extract. All of these ingredients are plant based.

My rule of thumb if it has an OSE in it…Hard pass

I’ve been using straight erythritol and love it. I ordered it from Amazon (now brand). It’s a lot cheaper than swerve. According to the package it’s about half as sweet as sugar which works out good for me. My sweet tooth is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

Yeah I have used straight erythritol as well. I use it in baking. Lately I’ve just been using Pyure, which is erythritol and stevia. I really like this brand.

I haven’t seen that brand. The only erythritol/stevia blend I’ve found that doesn’t have fillers comes in little packets!

Hey guys… I tend to be a stickler and also monitor both my blood insulin and blood ketone levels. SinFreeSugar doesn’t raise my insulin levels at all and has never thrown me out of ketosis. I tend to use it mostly in my homemade yogurt (cultured from half and half) and can honestly say that it’s really delicious. It’s a fuller/richer sweetness than erythritol alone. When I purchased it the first time, I was concerned that it would throw me out of whack, but it never has. I’ve never consumed more than 9 packs in a day, and I tend to maintain intermittent fasting for 16 - 48 hour stretches. My insulin levels are more important for me to watch rather than purely ketone.
