WW vs Keto (on WW website)

This is an interesting take on keto and what’s up with the picture of the woman who lost 41 pounds and they’ve got her in a heavy coat with her arms crossed so you can’t see what she looks like?

I’m also very disappointed that Oprah is donating $1 million to WW. She has been up and down weight wise so many times, you’d think she’d understand that what she’s doing doesn’t work.

I think it is “escalation of commitment” or “sunk-cost fallacy”.

Just like when you wait for a bus so long that you are late instead of grabbing a cab. At a certain point you’ve waited so long you get stuck. Surely the bus will come. You’ve waited so long already, it must almost be here. What if you get a cab and waste that money and then the bus comes? So you dig into that decision instead of getting a cab that will get you there on time.

She’s already invested so much emotionally and financially into WW being the right answer that it feels like she can’t afford change her mind. And I get it. I thought WW was “the only sane way to go” for a long time too. Probably until I had done keto for a week or so.

If you are talking about this pile of crap

Then ignore it?

It’s funny if you know the facts. It is sad though that most people accept their marketing as true science.

I didn’t see the picture of the woman though.

I forgot to post the link. I’ve added it to my original post now. Here’s the picture I was talking about.

I find it ironic that the name of their diet “Freestyle” is also the name of a diabetes glucose meter.

I noticed that too.

Live and let live.
People will believe what they want to believe.
I believed, at one point, that fat was bad, that we needed carbs, etc. I learnt something different. So can others, keyword being “can”.
I asked questions of the Universe, and It put the answers in my path, sometimes literally falling on me, as did the book Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf in a Chapters some 7 years ago. THAT set my path in motion. I only wish I’d had the gumption to go hardcore keto from the get-go.
But for others who insist that Doc Knows Best (Stockholm??), once again: live, and let live. Or die, whatever their choice.

Very carefully written article!

I see WW is feeling the pressure from the “free” keto diet you don’t have to pay anyone to follow and works 10 times better - especially for keeping it off.

My ‘favourite’ quote from the article you linked, Mark:

Note that once you overconsume carbs, the effects are reversed.

So apparently that’s a foregone conclusion… :rage:

UGH!

Actually WW is keto but it puts the horse behind the carriage and no emphasis on building more skeletal muscle volume combined with aerobic exercise, that’s why it does not work for some people and they gain it all back or just live in a perpetual stalling plateau? (…then it becomes a social club of ‘why we cannot figure out why we are still fat?’)

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #14

Isn’t that like saying, “Once you stop showering daily, you will start to smell again”?

So unfair, in either case, isn’t it?

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #15

I “liked” the comment about most of the lost weight being water weight. If so, I’m glad to not be sloshing around those 47 pounds of water anymore!

Also. When you join WW, they let you know your first week’s loss may be dramatic due to losing water weight. Because that’s how weight loss works no matter what the method is.

(Jane) #16

I disagree. You can do WW and remain keto but their list of unlimited "zero point foods’ includes fat free yogurt, beans, peas, lentils and sweetcorn and most people who need to lose weight would not be able to remain in ketosis eating unlimited quantities of those.

And… if you are going to do WW keto, then save your money and just do keto for free. No need for meal plans or food lists - just surf the food porn thread!

(Bunny) #17

I agree with the free part WW is a rip off…lol

Weight Watchers was something I did during my years of anorexia/bulimia/binging and because they charged you money weekly if you gained weight, I would just make sure I didn’t eat anything for a few days before weigh in, and/or make sure I had taken tons of laxatives of course… Keto makes us responsible for ourselves, not to some weigh in centre!

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #19

This is a perspective of WW vs keto I hadn’t thought of. So thank you for sharing this.

My problem with weight watchers is they assume all calories have the same effect on you, and they don’t. I assume the point system allows one to eat a “dessert”. Compare the same number of points for dessert and for a steak. Which one will make you hungrier?

I even limit sweet-tasting treats on keto for this reason, even if the treat is keto, such as a fat bomb. They make me want to eat more.
