WOW - look great.... BUT DON'T GO LOSING MORE WEIGHT!

(Vijay Bhakta) #1

How many of you have heard those exact words ?

Heard it twice on Saturday, my response was, I will just let my body decide when the time (weight) is right, it will just settle on what it is happy with.

“But surely if you just stop dieting it will stay the same”…

to which I said.

“Hmm, would you class Bacon, Eggs, Butter, Cheese as dieting ? No? Well, thats what I eat, its a low carb lifestyle, not a diet, so I can eat all this stuff and my body is loving it”

“Hmm… you don’t want to lose too much though”

*Sigh… moving on… how are the kids…"

What else can you say ?

Changing the subject is the best thing you can do.

When people tell you not to lose any more weight they are projecting their own feelings of guilt over not looking as good (or willing to change their diet). Jealousy shows up in odd ways sometimes…

We’ve got another societal thing going on as well, IMO. Full round faces, chubby smooth like little babies, are seen as healthy and attractive. (Ok, not so much the triple chin, but that certain fresh plumpness. Part of “the fat girl with the pretty face” is the fat IN her face.)

There’s no getting around the fact that when we lose weight, our faces change. They get angular, they may look a bit droopy or drawn, or not so radiant, especially if we’re not young to start with. I think people look at that when they look at a weight loss journey, and think it’s too much weight lost, when if they looked at our love handles, our lumpy thighs, our back rolls, (or our dexa scan results) they’d understand why we’re not finished.

Yep, round to angular face has happened to me… though the comments I get are that I am looking younger. Will take that

I forgot to mention that one of my most talkative of relatives was left speechless on Saturday, literally, he kept looking at me and sputtering - it was so funny. My cousin (his wife) called me last night to say that he has got over it now and that he must have told everyone he met on Sunday about me, uttering “I cant believe it man…”

Good point. I think I am almost at the point where I will go to the gym. My body does not feel quite there yet.

(karen) #7

I wonder if it scares some people … if they feel like maybe they don’t know us, that we’re not the same. And I’m pretty sure for the people who nurtured us as children, it’s frightening (or maybe even angering), that we’re somehow jeopardizing the health they fought for.

(Katie) #8

Often these comments come from people who are insecure about their own weight.

#9

Yep, annoying as h*ll, isn’t it? It’s okay for fat people to call people at a good weight too thin but holy blazes, if we dare to call them fat. And what’s interesting is those who are at the appropriate weight do look too thin because 2/3 of the populace is fat!!!

(karen) #10

That would be pretty funny, wouldn’t it? “Um, you look great, but you’re not going to gain any more weight, are you?”

#11

I’m surrounded by people who say “You’ve gone to far!”

I’ll go as far as I want, is my response

#12

Good point. I know it won’t happen with this WOE but those who lose weight without getting enough protein do look gaunt. Women especially will lose the weight around their face/upper body but they still have all the fat around the waist, belly and hips. That is a sign of an unhealthy weight loss.

(Diane) #13

Not necessarily. I am eating healthy, whole foods (with very few exceptions). I have Dexa scans over the past 6 months which document fat loss with very little loss of lean mass (24 lbs of fat vs 0.96 lbs of lean mass- skin and connective tissue in my opinion). But I’ve lost weight on my neck and chest (and feet, for heaven sakes!), while still having plenty to lose in my belly (lots of loose skin) and thighs.

I don’t consider my weight loss to be unhealthy. People comment how much better I look, how positive my attitude is compared to before. But I don’t get to pick where my body chooses to shed some of its extra weight. It comes off where it wants to come off.

#14

Oh my, I should have clarified this better. These are people that are done losing weight. They consider themselves at a good weight. You, I presume are still losing it. And yes, I too have lost it more in the upper body and still have a ways to go with the belly fat. I only have 15 lbs to go so I certainly hope that’s when the belly fat will dissolve :o/

But I’m not done like these folks are. And there’s a haggard look to them and their skin is not a good color. Unlike those who are doing it by tracking macros and getting the correct nourishment.

(Katie the Quiche Scoffing Stick Ninja ) #15

“Each to their own” ie. I’ll do me and you do you and stop talking to me about my fucking diet

(Empress of the Unexpected) #16

I just lie and say: “Doctor says I need to lose another ten pounds - belly fat is very unhealthy.” That ends the conversation. Most of the people who say this to me have a lot of belly fat. I love the shock factor.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #17

Yes. What happened to my face? I love the weight loss but………

(Troy) #18

Walk away, change the subject, smile etc
All the above mentioned

Or just say I’m targeting visceral fat😄

#19

I thought I only got these comments because I’m a kid… I have 3 different close family members who have came up with 3 different weight numbers that I “cannot” go under… and if I do, they say they will “take me to McDonald’s and stuff my face until the scale moves up” o.O

#20

Sorry that’s happening to you

Hear it all the time.
My wife , her best friend and two of my daughters were talking about it one day, like I wasn’t even there. I told them I need to get a T shirt made that says “I KNOW YOU THINK I LOOKED HEALTHIER WHEN I WAS DYING!”
