Will simply eating zero carbs put me in ketosis?

I have been trying out the keto diet or should I say zero carb diet for a couple of months now, combined with IF. I say zero carb because I have put all my focus on not eating any carbs at all and eating higher fat meats and fish but have not been tracking my macros exactly. Also I have not tested if I am in ketosis or not.

The thing I am wondering is if I just eat zero carbs, won’t I go into ketosis regardless of eating the recomeded 70% fat ratio.

You don’t need a particular fat ratio, you just need very few carbs and not too much protein (though this is someone disputed – my theory is that insulin is culprit not gluconeogenesis if protein is high). Fasting is the ultimate ketogenic diet and you don’t need to ingest any fat at all for that!

You do need only moderate protein consumption, or your body will still burn glucose for fuel.

That’s what I was thinking. I knew that fasting puts you in ketosis so was pretty sure it was the low/zero carbs that did it. In terms of protein will your body convert it into glucose if you eat too much.

An example of my daily plan right now is 1-2 meals a day within a 4 hour window. So 20 hours of fasting. I generally just eat high fat meats and fish like maceral eggs along with avocado and my big love mayonnaise👅. I am sensible with it but am wondering if just focusing on eating pretty much zero carbs is enough to ensure ketosis.

Do you think just making sure the protein sources I eat are higher fat is enough to do the job for example eating fatty fish instead of eating say chicken breast.

What I really want to know is do I really need to track my macros exactly or is just been smart about the meats and veg I eat while completely cutting out carbs enough

I’m interested in this as well

My answer is yes, if you eat zero carb, you’ll be in ketosis – no need to track your macros. Fatty red meats and fatty fish are best. That’s basically all I do and I feel great.

I have moved this topic to the zero carb section, as I feel it is more appropriate there and you are more likely to get an answer that way.

That said my comment is: don’t forget your offal!

Thanks for you help. I have been wondering about this but was sure it was right because above all else I also feel fantastic. No more falling asleep after meals I getting tired if I don’t have a fix of sugar for a while. Overall energy is way way higher. Mood is better. Have lost 20lbs of fat in 9 weeks. Mental clarity!!!

Goodby glucose. Hello keto and a way better day EVERYDAY

Not sure, everyone is different. I would say that since you are pretty lean, then you probably are insulin sensitive, and can get away with more carbs than someone who is way out of whack. I would say eating fattier cuts of meats and eating your veggies is good. You may need to supplement with butter, oils or other healthy fats too though.
