How do you not get carbs if you eat veggies , especially avocados or any berries. Using the Keto calculator my carbs came to 30. I’m not having trouble with fats if you use dressing on your salad, butter on your veggies or even eat bacon. I haven’ snacked at all . I’m Down 2.2 lbs in 4 days. I know the first 10 lbs are probably water. I can’t imagine going 20 carbs or less. Mind you if I hadn’t had some berries today I would have been under 20. I guess we all have to figure out what works for us. I use the carb manager but don’t always find exactly what I’m looking for so I estimate. This forum is awesome and very helpful for us newbies.
Why do I beat myself up going over 20g carbs?
I don’t eat a lot of veggies. I’m not carnivore, but I’ve never been a big veggie eater and honestly don’t believe they’re that necessary for good health. And if I’m eating keto-friendly veg, like cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms, spring mix greens (those are my favorite), I don’t bother to count them, because I’m not eating a large portion anyway.
But then, I don’t count anything except the “extras.” So I look at carbs in HWC, or the dark chocolate I’m currently eating (6 net or 9 total). But so far today, the only carbs I’ve had are in the HWC (1 or 2), the toppings from 3 slices pizza (so some bell pepper, onion, mushroom, olive, but seriously, how much veg is on a pizza?), and now this chocolate. So I’m at maybe 10-15 total or less net.
I really don’t keep a true record, but if, for example, I eat more blueberries than maybe I should one day, then the next day I won’t eat dark chocolate or any other extras. If I’ve had erythritol in my coffee 2 or 3 days in a row, I might skip it for the next 2…just so that I’m not in a rut, but I let my calories and carbs go up and down depending on hunger levels that day.
You will get some carbohydrate, but not all of it is digestible. If you stay with leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, you will be surprised at how much you can eat without going over the limit. Many people in the U.S. and Canada subtract the fiber from the carbohydrate total. (In Europe and the Commonwealth, the fiber is already subtracted from the carbohydrate amount.)
Don’t worry about it. It’s not a perfect limit. I go up to 40 g of carbs and I’m still in ketosis. I verify with a blood meter. The number varies from person to person but 20 g is considered safe for most people to be in ketosis. Also, one thing that might help is cutting out processed food. After I cut out processed food, I actually struggled to get to 20 g net carbs. I eat a boatload of veggies now.
Since I am only 5 weeks into this way of life, I am counting all of my carbs, even in broccoli or pickles. But my mantra lately is "I am not going to get fat eating broccoli "! So KCKO and just remember, we used to eat maybe hundreds of carbs a day, like the last week before you started, so everyday on keto is progress!
Eat a pinch of salt and take a swig of water.
