Who blew it on Thanksgiving?

#1

I mean, besides me. I was coming off a long weekend in London where I had too many xiao long bao and egg tarts, etc and was thinking about planning a near-keto Turkey Day but no… I went back to the OLD turkey day habits adding in the regular gravy, cornbread stuffing, sweet cranberry sides along with gobs of veggie casseroles and pies. Oh my, did I eat pie. And not just Thursday, but Friday and Saturday full of football and family. I bet I ate 7 pieces of pie in 3 days. At least I didn’t go nuts on the Chex Mix. I normally eat vast quantities of that,

Fasting today. Scales says I gained more than physically possible in a week of overindulgence. Hopefully most of it comes back quickly. I can do much better at Christmas as I plan to do either a standing rib roast or a big tenderloin.

Cheat day turned into 8 or 9 days so I am sure I have a tough sled ahead. I hit the road T-W for OKC and then on the 5th for Cairo, Zurich and DC. I will have to really do better on airplane and out of town stuff but that shouldn’t be too tough. Of course Egypt is carb central. They even have a dish called koshari as their national dish…(lentils, macaroni, rice, and chickpeas)

Went to hell and back! Up 10lbs and don’t regret it at all! I’ll hand myself my ass in the gym for the next week or so and I’ll be fine. Too much awesome food to be religious about it. Plus, I do thanksgiving on both sides of the family AND travel 500 miles to be there, so it’s not even like I can make myself stuff in the mean time.

No holiday here, I just visited a relative when I felt unwell and vulnerable. I’ve been doing low-carb since ages, I was way worse than usual and I can be pretty relaxed with my own rules there… I need to get better. Well, I am back on track and don’t feel bad but I hope I will evolve soon.
My weight is exactly the same as usual not in ketosis, 4 lbs above my stable keto weight, it doesn’t make much sense my weight is this stable…

I am sure Christmas will be much better. It’s possible to mess things up more but it’s beyond my abilities and I always do moderately well on Christmas and it will be after my carnivore trial if things go smoothly, even I can’t do a carnivore->high-carb jump, right? It wouldn’t make sense.

Going on/off keto is pretty normal for me, it’s usually not a problem at all. I don’t actually plan it but it tends to happen on some occasions. I don’t force things, I know I slowly change and my direction is often good. So I don’t worry about these things, it wouldn’t make anything better anyway.

I had a fantastic KETO Thanksgiving! A bit more carbs than usual but I believe I stayed in ketosis and had zero weight gain. Very enjoyable meal!

Sousvide Turkey Breast, Giblet Gravy made with Turkey Bone Broth and the neck and backbone meat from that with gizzard and heart thickened with Xanthan Gum, Green Beans with Bacon and Onion, Cauliflower Mash, Spaghetti Squash with Butter, Allulose and Pumpkin Pie Spice. :man_cook:t3:

I drank some good Irish Whiskey, snacked on Salami and Olives, and had some Hot Apple Compote made with winter apples from our orchard for desert. :yum:

It was so awesome not getting PTGS
post Thanksgiving gorging syndrome! :cowboy_hat_face:

I didn’t gain (or didn’t gain much). I had a small amount of carby stuff, but was short on fat for my meal. I definitely had a dramatic increase in BG. I wasn’t eating at home so it was harder to have the added fat. Perhaps I should have brought my own cream to drink. It also took a while for my BG to come back down into normal range. Longer than I thought it would. I didn’t look at numbers much while I was eating, so it was at least the next day (or late that night) when I saw. I wanted to have a sampling of most of the foods, and wanted to eat and not be hungry.

Not me. I lost two pounds.

Didn’t blow it, I did eat more than I planned on Thursday. Friday dinner I went off again, after not eating all day–we went to a local auction that supports a local charity. Saturday morning my joints and muscles felt the difference, today has been better but I know it will take a few weeks to lose the pain and inflammation again. I don’t mind, the food was good as was the company, I ate less than I have in years past, and I’m lucky enough I can get back on track quickly. Last night, while everyone was gorging on frozen cream pies, I had a small piece of keto-cheesecake and was fine, I just really wanted more smoked turkey.

Didn’t blow it, had turkey and green beans then got pretty sick…down a couple pounds with unplanned water fast, maybe dehydration…but almost at lowest weight since starting Keto journey.

Blew it a tiny bit on Thanksgiving but really blew it for two days after and paid the price. Back on track since Saturday night.

When was Thanks Giving? I understand it’s an end of autumn harvest feast, before we start eating for ‘winter’? A celebration of our human agricultural evolution? Seems a bit antithetical.

Our autumn feast is a full moon celebration known as Easter. It celebrates the wonderful concept of an egg :egg:. And I give thanks to the religious people who convinced the politicians that it should be a 4 day long weekend.

Well, it was the first day of calendar summer here. Upsydown world. The vegans are carnivores and the carnivores want to save the environment.

No need to fatten up for cold weather. Looking forward to long sunny days.

Here was my f(e)ast: I woke to my beautiful wife’s smile. Then got a head boop from each of my cats. :cat: :cat:. Cows were lowing and eating sweet herby mown meadow hay outside the front door (not my farm). The sunlight was gold and warm on my skin. I dove into the ocean lagoon, the fish were flashing jewels. Clarity. Refreshing. The blues were bright and harmonious. I rubbed the salt roughly from sun dried skin. Drank some delicious cool rain water and walked through the food forest (my place) listening to the flycatchers and wrens snipping insects from the air. The bees were busy in the peppermint trees. A light breeze animated the taller trees. The cicadas have emerged and overlay their electronic music over the hum. I did some stretching and breathing in this feast for the senses. I breathed a big breath in and then blew it (out). Long and slow.

I forgot to eat. I could signal my amazing hunger control and say I intentionally fasted. But I just didn’t feel the need to eat any food as the day’s activity was nourishing. Eventually I drew and completed an illustration for a client and sent that off into the business world (somewhere out there). I dream of the blueberry bush I can purchase from the proceeds of a keto fuelled creativity. The pages of cartoons and drawings that led to the illustration are a fertile field to develop some paintings.

A big blow out can equally be a long sigh of contentment. Near Nirvana.

@FrankoBear Fall celebration with a historical? event tied to it. Lots of truths and myths but it’s part of American history. There’s a story about the local tribe helping the first settlement of pilgrims from England learn how to survive and they shared a feast together. That’s the school kid version. :cowboy_hat_face:

The real version is more complicated and modern historians can’t help to contextualize the events with their own biases and slants. Nonetheless, a real event occurred and while the participants may not have placed much stock in it, it ranks relatively high on the “did the event on which we base our holiday actually happen?” scale assuming you rank all the holidays on some sort of veracity meter. The US holidays do about as well on that scale as do those of other nations and considerably better than many…trust me, I lived in China.

I had a good Thanksgiving meal. We ended up eating a couple days late. I had keto and regular foods. I ate mostly keto.
Wednesday our furnace went out. (It’s still out.) Thursday my son called to let me know he was still not well and they wouldn’t be coming for dinner with my grand kids. He then ended up going to the emergency department at the hospital and we went to pick up the grandson. My son had emergency surgery. He did well and was able to come Saturday day for Thanksgiving dinner. He was sore but we were thankful he was doing better. And we got to share the day together.
Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for all the blessings we have. No matter what might be going on, I think remembering all the good and knowing it can be a lot worse.:yum: is helpful.
My faith in God and knowing he is good and loves me keeps things in perspective for me.
Most years have gone a bit smoother but it all ended up pretty good here. And I didn’t gain weight or feel sick from eating too much or too many carbs…
I think I it was a good day for us.

I stayed on plan. Cooked the meal so I knew exactly what was in everything but still ended up gaining 3.8 pounds over the following two days! Maybe too much prosecco? I don’t know. But the good news is that today, Monday, the day I actually record my weight, I am down a pound for the week! So I lost what I gained and then some. I did have a lot of turkey bone broth on Friday so salt may have been in play. My birthday was the prior week and I did have some dessert on that day - just a few bites. Shared the tiny dessert the steak house brought out for me with my husband and son. Showed a slight gain from that but it wasn’t awful. That’s why we decided to stay dessert free for Thanksgiving. Month over month,

I was down .3 on December 1 from November 1 which is tiny but November is always a tough month because of my birthday and thanksgiving so I consider that a triumph. Also I am at goal weight right now so to maintain is the key.

I set a new goal on my fitbit to lose another 5 when I hit goal back in October, but with how this month went, not sure if that’s realistic, but we will see. The next challenge will be Christmas as we are going on a road trip and I always gain on trips. We are going to stay at a hotel with a kitchenette so that will help.

I’ve only been Keto for most of a month, but I decided to break Keto, partly, to see what happened, and partly because I wasn’t prepared with Keto alternatives. It was interesting. An old friend came Tuesday, and between the booze, the mashed potatoes, and the pie, I gained 7 pounds! Have not fasted yet, but have been back on keto since Friday and am still not in Ketosis. I did lose three of the seven pounds gained. Water weight I’m sure.

I’m interested to see how long it takes to bounce back.

Me, too!!!

#17

I brought my unsweetened chocolate with me and I always buy stuff there (my relative lives in a big city and I live between 2 small villages without a single decent shop) and I had butter  (She only has margarine, with 30% fat content. Hardened oily water, even its taste is horrible, I don’t understand people. She eats a nice amount of fatty animal protein without a problem, mind you.) I even had my own keto bread. My own food couldn’t balance out my horrible mental state and attitude this time but they are great in normal circumstances. It took years but nowadays I am quite ready to visit anyone and I won’t feel forced to eat a carby stuff just because I don’t have something better.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #18

I just want thinking about it. I was busy trying to get 4 children ready. And for me, eating more carbs occasionally won’t set me back much

#19

Yup. And no regrets at all. Thanksgiving dinner Thursday and anniversary dinner Friday. It was wonderful. Fasting today to get back on track, but the scale did not see a change as of yesterday. Shrug

I did well not to eat the cranberry relish and sweet potato pie. I skipped dessert too. I did drink more than I should and still hanging onto weight I gained staying at an all inclusive resort last week. The hot wings on Saturday didn’t help either. I need to lose four pounds to get back to my normal weight. Who knows, I may even try to go below that for fun.
