Which supplements to take & which to avoid to promote weight loss/autophagy? Also possible medication interactions

#1

Greetings this is my first post.

I have been researching ketosis & intermittent fasting for a while & I intend to start both soon. I have already started 16-8 fasting. In the past I have used the warrior diet & the vlc diet to lose weight the wrong way. I want to do things right & make this a lifestlye & get as much health benefits as I can. I have already lost about 100 lbs & have done the same 3 previous times in my lifetime but this time I want to keep going & be healthy, not skinny fat. Thus I discovered ketosis/intermittent fasting & most importantly autophagy.

I plan to start & I want to try to get the full benefits of the diet. Which brings me to my concerns, I take 3 medications & several supplements.

One of them is forskolin & after researching I discovered that forskolin prevents autophagy? The reason I found out is because when reading about autophagy I learned about its relationship with cAMP & remembered that forskolin affects cAMP. I googled it & found that it inhibits autophagy.

I do not remember all the supplements I take because a few are a combination of several in one bottle but I am afraid that taking them might halt or alter my body getting the most benefits of the diet.

I am debating wether to stop them completely or just try it out & see how it goes. I am wondering if anybody has had a experience or knows of certain supplements I should avoid & if there are any that would help.

I can list them when I get home as I am on my phone but it’s several. The medication I take are adderral, zoloft & a anti anxiety medication that I can’t remember right now.

These are powerful boosters check to see for interactions & contradictions (first two on the list are the best for fat burning):

  1. Selenium

  2. Kelp (iodine)

  3. Bone Broth (on empty stomach)

  4. Lysine

  5. Arginine

  6. Carnitine

  7. Niacin

  8. Wheatgrass Juice

  9. Nutritional Yeast (non-un-fortified)

  10. Chia Seeds

just do plain keto with once a week doing a 24 hour fast thus helping you prevent losing muscle mass.
What i would recommend is doing a 24 hour fast and breaking it and doing another 24 'fat fast" HWC,Butter,Pork rinds, mct oil, coco nut oil,fat trimmings, olive oil shots.

for supps I highly recommend L-Carnite and Garcinia camboga along with drinking some coffee

I don’t know about whether those meds would prevent autophagy (though I think Adderall is a kind of stimulant and might suppress appetite). Metformin is said to promote autophagy (it affects mTOR amongst other mechanisms) and I have read about resveratrol, tumeric, and green tea being beneficial as well.

I am pretty sure I am taking all of those besides the bone broth.

My plan is to get fat adapted doing keto/if 23-1 or 22-2 & then do a 3 day fast every month.

Would I need to stop taking those supplements?

No

#7

Ok so after a bit more research I have found out that basically any type of antoxidant can inhibit autophagy?

I am thibking it would be best to stop taking everything when I start the extended fast phase?

#8

Once you get pas Day 3, Days 4 and 5 are usually easier so I would consider that if your health permits

(Chris) #9

If you cut out foods that oxidize you, you no longer need antioxidants!

#10

It’s my understanding that the autophagy benefits max out at about day 5?

Very true lol & that is the plan but I take a multi, a supplement to help with adrenal fatiue & a few others. For example here is my multivitamin which I think I would have to stop taking.

4 or 5 to start really getting autophagy results, but it’s a point of contention because this theory had to be extrapolated from mouse studies. Human autophagy study, IIRC is too invasive for ethics boards to allow it.

#13

That makes sense. What would be yor suggestion? I am taking I should take all my supplements but when I start the water fast I need to drop everything except for maybe potassium & magnesium? Maybe drop everything a day or two before the wster fast to ensure they are out of my system before I begin the water fast.

(Chris) #14

If fasting for less than a week don’t even sweat the mag and K, you can get what you need with salt IMO. I don’t start the other two until day 6 personally. Not worried about dropping stuff before the fast, the fast starts when you stop putting things other than water in your mouth.

Multivitamins probably aren’t benefiting much anyway, TBH a ton of those included in a multi aren’t even bioavailable in humans in the form they’re delivered in. They can also contain a lot of fillers. Eating fatty meats and animal-sourced foods generally takes care of all my vitamin needs personally. I’m not giving you advice with this statement, more like food for thought and something to spark you to read more about it.

I would shout your message to the heavens @Dread1840 ! In 1934 Herbert Shelton of Hygienic Living ( and sometimes quack) had said of studies on fasting that the learned men of science were determined to help mother nature along by adding things to a fast. He recognized in horses and dogs that when sick they refused to eat to get healthy. He also as a member of many fasting societies had access to a large number of people and various types of fasts. He said his observation of rejuvenation (now called autophagy) could only be seen clearly on a water fast after the tenth day. Strength loss and vigor increased up to the 21st day after a three day decrease in the beginning.

I have taken to reading many of these old “quacks” and I am amazed at what they observed. Sometimes known as the starvation cure, these societies all have recorded a great deal of reversing a great deal of the things we are just now trying to understand albeit their terminology is archaic.

Hey I can anecdote this!

I have a kitty who is type 1, he needs 4 iu of insulin twice a day and is on grain free food (I will be transitioning him to all meat at some point soon, though). Because of his illness we took our two cats with us for the holiday trip out of state to my parents’ house. My sister lives with them, with her cat.

Anyway, we came home, and Colossus was acting weird like he was having glucose (low or high) issues, vomiting, lethargy, etc. He stopped eating altogether for 3 days, because of that we monitored his BG and decided to stop his insulin until he felt better.

Well, he bounced back and started eating, we resumed his meds, and his BG is back to normal. Fasting heals.

Me too, and I honestly almost feel like a conspiracy theorist whackjob sometimes with these rabbit holes I let myself fall into. But it makes sense ( a lot of this quackery ).

(Mark Rhodes) #17

And rather than panic because kitty wasn’t eating we recognized something was wrong and allowed some time, with monitoring, for self correction.

(Mark Rhodes) #18

In particular the Hygenist Herbert Shelton. He lived to about 91 but succumbed to Parkinson’s and the authorities blamed a death on his fasting clinic finally bankrupting him. I think he got wrong his vegetarian diet but his assumptions about what were needed after a fast were on track. He calls modern scientists nit wits saying in 1934 we must eat often and that eating is the only thing to preserve strength.

(Andrew) #19

You should find the ADD much better on keto. Then you moght skip the adderal, then your anxiety should be better. 2/3 is pretty good. Just keep your dr in the loop…

After seeing some of the suggested supplements, I wanted to share what I started taking today. There is no “proprietary blend,” no stimulant, and no sketchy ingredients listed, so I wanted to try it out. I will report back with results, if any. These flashy meathead-esque supplements are not always my favorite, and this is the first that seems to not have a bunch of garbage in it.
