Currently live on the Tennessee Cumberland Plateau. Grew up in PA Amish country, then spent close to a decade north of Lake Pontchartrain, LA… until a certain hurricane (Katrina) convinced me and my wife we didn’t want to live there anymore. Like TN. But not committed to it as a “forever home”. Son lives in Phoenix, AZ, and this time of year, it’s sure tempting.

Central coast of California…

(Jane) #71

Grew up in Houston. Bought retirement property 14 years ago in the middle of nowhere in north central Arkansas. Built my home 3 years ago and my retired husband holds down the fort while I have to travel here and yon for my job.

Love it here!!!

But boy howdy do the folks around here need keto in the worst way! I would say at least 70% of the population here is overweight and out of them, 30% morbidly so. It makes me sad.

I know folks around here don’t have a lot of money and buy cheap carbage but dammit! Look at pictures of poor country folks 50 years ago - they weren’t fat! But the addictive processed foods loaded with chemicals that stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain have won out. People lose. CEO’s get fat bonuses.

Jane, I’ll bet most of us can share that sentiment with you.

I was thinking just the other day, sometimes I think I want to binge and get something sweet I used to eat (like maybe some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and some milk), but when I get to the store I see all this “motivation” (overweight people limping around or riding in those electric carts) and suddenly I don’t want anything sweet anymore. I think I’ll keep my good health and ability to walk, thank you.

I sincerely don’t mean the above in a negative way. Knowing I’ve been in their position and that it can be better, makes me so terribly sad and mad at the same time.

I haven’t posted here, yet, because my profile clearly states I live in Amarillo, Texas, USA, but for a brief history, I grew up in the small oil/agriculture town of Seminole, Texas. Moved to Rincon, Georgia for a couple of years, then lived in Houston, Texas for three.

Finally moved to Amarillo, and have lived here happily ever since.

(I suspect that’s plenty of fodder for the identity thieves out there)

(Susan) #76

I’m in Essex, U.K. There’s another thread with photos of members’ home towns or areas.

(Brian) #77

I thought about that… and then I wondered, who would want to bother with me? I’m pretty much a nobody, and there are certainly more target rich environments than me.

When we moved out here in the stix, I kinda worried about whether people would lust after the little bit of stuff that I had. Yeah, right. They’re farmers around here. They have bigger mowers, bigger tractors, bigger 4-wheelers. My stuff is puny and cheap in comparison. In a way, that’s a bit comforting in a twisted kind of way.

Everything in Texas is bigger. I could have been a texan. Not sure why but I have always felt that way.
