Where to order high quality beef tallow?

(Becky Searls) #1

Hello! Anybody know if this brand of beef tallow in amazon is any good??

If not-where do you all buy it?? And is it a good fat to reverse sear ribeye in?

I’ve seen jars of beef tallow for sale at a store named Natural Grocers in the Denver area. Food stores such as Whole Foods and Spouts may also carry tallow. Try the health/natural food stores in your area.

You may also perform a Google search with the phrase “tallow” and the name of your city to locate where it may be available locally.

Have you also tried Fatworks? (I’ve never tried products from this company, but the variety looks interesting.)

I got some from these guys last year and it was really good I thought. It lasts a damn long time, I’m still on the same quart from summer.

Try any butcher shop or meat department. They often will sell their excess fat. You can render it down if you want to, but I usually just chop it to size required. You really should spread the pieces out on cookie sheets and freeze ASAP to preserve quality. Don’t let it set in the fridge! It’s easy to defrost in the microwave. It costs me $1.00-1.50 per pound, depending on where I buy it.

Used your advice and found a good source for tallow and lard. Thanks!

How exactly do I render beef fat into tallow?

A large pot on fairly low heat. Chop the fat small, or keep larger if you want the cracklings. Seasoned they are tasty or make good doggy treats. Strain the liquid fat through cheesecloth.
