I use the urine strips to measure ketosis, and have found it hard to learn online where exactly I should be on those strips for optimal ketosis. I usually find myself in “small” (which is around 1.5) - is this okay for keto because even if it’s low it means that I’m in ketosis so I’m good? Or should I push for a more optimal number?
Where Should I be on Ketosis Test Strips?
The test strips are a little small, but with a sharp pencil they are just big enough track your carbs for the day. If you are under 20 carbs, you are all set.
I’m not aware of any other practical use for them other than creating unnecessary anxiety. It’s an innacurate measurement of a biomarker that’s not terribly helpful. The deeper you go into ketosis, the less capable they are of measuring that fact.
In all seriousness, just keep your carbs under 20, stay hydrated, and be patient. Your body knows exactly what to do!
Edit: You can tape several of them together to make a coaster.
Edit 2: If you have a jellyfish sting on the hand or fingers, urinating on the stick with poor aim may neutralize some of the poison providing an analgesic effect.
They were created for T1 diabetics as a spot test for elevated ketones. The companies that make them saw a marketing opportunity with the keto diet craze.
I didn’t know that! It makes sense though. Ketoacidosis is no joke for T1 folks.
