I haven’t had any shortage issues in Colorado, however my sister in Virginia is being held to only two pieces of meat per shopping trip. That’s not a problem since she’s the only one at her house but what if there were a family shopping. Are you experiencing meat shortages in your area? I have quite a bit in my freezer but the keto diet relies pretty heavily on meat.
Where’s the beef?
Not seeing any shortages (nor rationing) either - here also in Mountain Time a few hundred miles west of Colorado. Our freezer is always happily stocked with meat… but keto can do that to a freezer
We’re in SE Virginia and we are not finding beef in the grocery store. When there is some, it goes fast! Even chicken and pork is scarce.
Three of our sons work in fast food and they are experiencing serious beef shortages.
We are a family of 6 with 4 sons (15 - 20). We go through meat quickly even though I’m the only one eating keto.
Our regular grocery store had beef and some pork but no chicken at all. The week before, it was well stocked on everything. I’m in central Florida near the space center.
Here in CT it varies by store. Some have no restrictions, others are limited to 1 or two pieces. Some are empty some are overflowing.
In upper MI. What I have noticed is a change from the normal brands of chicken we’re used to (Tyson, Amish, etc) - over to some different, non-branded ones. Every so often, one of the regular brands shows up, but not regularly. Beef supply seems pretty normal. Pork - maybe not quite so much. But with the mad dash for hams at Easter, supplies might just look lower than the recent past. (?) Bacon is another story. DEFINITELY less in stores.
Canned goods. Tuna, in particular, seems slightly off. I was unable to find basic Startkist, and a couple of the Bumblebee varieties. In their place, was a brand I’d never heard of. Can’t remember the brand name, but I noticed it was packaged in Mexico. Most of the regular brands I see are from Thailand.
Spam has been popular, all varieties. Haven’t noticed a shortage there.
Certain soups seem to be low. Chunky varieties, some Progresso. Some Campbells. - not all of them, though. Maybe there was a rush to stock up on easy-to-heat up foods, and the store just has not had time to replenish from their backstock, or re-order. I try hard not to go into Walmart- as that is where our first real COVID case originated. But, the one time I was there, I noticed the shelves around soups, meats and certain canned veggies were quite bare. Bacon was low, as was frozen meats.
Just glad I’ve got my beef cattle roaming in the back 40. And, 16 new chickens, plus 3 turkeys thriving as well. Waiting patiently for fresh eggs, and then run a couple batches of eggs through the incubator. I i’d 2 roosters amongst our hens…so within 6 mos, we should be able to get a new batch of baby chicks. Steelhead are running up here, lake trout, brookies- to come. So, fish supply is good.
I’m in Colorado too. Since one of our meat processing plants had closed, I had made sure we had plenty of beef/bison in the freezer. We have been able to get chicken pieces delivered, and even roasted whole chickens are available in our area, NW Denver suburbs. King Soopers has said they will start limiting meats to 3 per visit, but we haven’t encountered that yet. We are getting everything delivered now, not even having to pick up at the grocery which we had to do originally. Between Fresh, Instacart, and Omaha Steaks we don’t need to do that now.
Im also in Colorado, Colorado Springs to be exact and i haven’t experienced any stores with meat shortages or limits yet.
Had to make a quick run over to Walmart yesterday after work. Holy smokes! The entire meat section was cleared out except for a few random packs of each meat. Mostly, there was the 80/20 ground beef in tubes, some packages of pork, and a few packs of chicken and turkey. The entire section was roughly 20% full. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time in there, so I can’t speak to what the rest of the store was like. Just happened to notice that when going by.
I just did my weekly pick up from King Soopers. I had ordered Hormel natural bacon. I had said that I would except a substitute, at least I would have some bacon. There is no bacon to be had.
I guess we’re really lucky here in central California. Everything is available. I hope it doesn’t trickle down here too. I don’t have much freezer space. There’s even sales still happening on Beef and Pork.
People around us are really taking note of the possibility/probability of meat shortages. Many have expressed their skepticism towards the unknown origins of some meats showing up at the grocers… which is why my husband and I have been answering ALOT of calls over the past couple of days requesting beef. Had one lady ask if she could just buy a whole cow! LOL!.
We don’t have a whole lot to sell right now, if we plan to have our own supply last through the fall. And even then, we don’t know how processing might be handled. I am mentally gearing up to deal with the likelihood of processing a cow myself this fall. Have to find pricing on a band saw, and a new set of knives.
Never ending to-do list, I have.
Where I live, CT, people are traveling from NY to us to get food. Covid-19 has infected many, many processing plants.
It’s all over the place:
I haven’t been able to get pork or bacon at King Soopers, but there is a local boutique grocery store that gets their meat Butchered locally… 3 pounds bacon yay
I’ve been able to get beef again at the grocery store.
Also, our local fast food places have beef once again, so something has reopened. I suspect that processing plants will slowly reopen, and then may have to close or reduce production again. I think a local chicken processing plant is at reduced production, but I can still find chicken.
I just don’t understand why it is still so difficult to find any toilet paper or paper towels. Are people still grabbing everything? Or are the plants that process them all closed down?
At the COSTCO in New Mexico, there’s still a lot of beef. However, they are limiting purchase of eggs to 1 carton, and bacon to 1 package.
It’s sad that at least in some states farmers can’t sell or process their own meat for sale They may only sell it on the hoof. In Michigan, I heard a representative share a bill he wanted passed that would make it legal to use local meat processors to allow farmers to sell their own meat. This was especially relevant as these huge processing plants were shutting down, and meat was wasted as they could not sell direct to consumers who could also not get the meat they wanted.
It makes too much sense and takes money away from the conglomerates, so I don’t see this kind of legislation passing.
