Where’s the beef?

I found this Shawn Baker video on my YouTube feed a couple days ago. The first minute he’s working out and talking then it switches to a Kansas Cattleman who talks about 10 minutes I think on the current state of the beef industry. Worth watching. :cowboy_hat_face:

Prince George, BC, Canada. No shortages but no sales either (on beef or pork). I go to butchers shops (one of which closed here; only one remains) to dodge rationing, which I don’t think is happening anyway, as well as to get medium rather than lean ground.

I can buy way too many eggs at Costco here. At least, when I tried…

Where we are (CT), all locations, including Costco, are rationing meat. Moreover, I started buying “hunks of beef”, like different roasts, which I then sous vide for a while and eat all week. These have gotten much, much smaller. The last one we bought was barely over 2 pounds. Ha!! That’s nothing and not anywhere near the lunches I take. That’s a little over one lunch.

Also, steak prices are INSANE. My daughter wants steak tonight. It’ll probably be $100 for us to buy 5 steaks. And if they cut them smaller, it might be 6-7 steaks. I can easily eat a pound of steak, so if they are 12 ounces, I could eat two of them.

We bought three steaks the other day and they were about $9 a pound. More than I usually spend on t bones and the like. Meat sales are not near as common and prices are higher on all of it. I think hamburger was $5 a pound. I found chicken for 99 cents a pound recently which is excited for. I miss the cheaper prices though.

Looks like we got ribeyes for $12/pound. So, about $60 for one meal for the five of us. However, since we’re limited in amount, we could only get 4 steaks, less than 4 pounds, so I’ll be eating something in addition to steak.

I bought a London broil. Very thick and lots of meat for nine dollars. The ribeyes were more expensive and I decided to add my own fat instead.

I understand the limits, but find them frustrating. With a family of 6 (4 sons and husband, all big guys around 6’ or more) it’s difficult to buy enough meat at one time if I don’t go to more than one grocery store or shop every day.
