My friends are telling me that the fat i eat on keto will build up round my waste and as belly is not shifting fast I’m starting to fear they may be correct.
Where does all the fat go that we eat on keto?
If you are eating minimal carbs (less than 20g per day) then it won’t…
You say your belly isn’t shifting “fast” which implies that it is shifting slowly?
How long did it take to arrive?
What @MarkGossage said. The fat you eat will be used as fuel as long as you are eating minimal carbohydrates. If you are still eating plenty of carbohydrates then your friend is correct, eating a lot of fat will only make you fatter. The trick with keto is to severely restrict carbohydrates and replace those carbohydrate calories with fat calories to fuel your body.
Fat loss, like fat gain, doesn’t happen all at once. Moreover, fat disappears in whatever order it wants to; there doesn’t seem to be any way to control the progression. I and others on these forums have found that we lost fat in reverse order of its arrival, so my belly fat will be the last to go. Others have different stories.
But the simple answer is that it is excess dietary carbohydrate that gets stored as fat, whereas the fat we eat gets metabolised. Bear in mind, however, that the real explanation of what happens is fantastically complicated, and this is just the précis of the executive summary of the synopsis. The human body is wonderfully and fearfully made, and there are lots of redundant pathways to ensure that we stay alive and reproduce.
It’s complicated, we people often work differently and there are many factors but if you eat the proper amount (not like it’s always easy to say what it means), you should use it for fuel on any diet, some gets lost, probably usually a very little.
I usually use up the fat I eat, on keto, off keto. I eat more fat on higher-carb and maintain my weight about the same, probably gain a little in a long time but only if I seriously overeat and my actual weight matter too, my current weight is quite stable. But it’s me. I rarely overeat if I eat little carbs but some people do it often. It’s possible to eat too much on keto but I really have no experience or knowledge about it, it’s theoretically possible to gain fat on keto as far as I know, that’s it. Our metabolism doesn’t get magical (mine surely never did that), eating a ton isn’t advisable - if we want to lose and not maintain, it’s even more so. Just like losing fat on HCHF is totally possible and even easy for some people…
If you eat “too much” fat then it will either get burned up through increased activity, or stored. It’s more likely to be stored if you’re eating lots of carbs because that switches off fat release from cells via higher insulin.
On keto, fat is your primary energy source so you’re probably going to store some for later and burn most of it as you go about your day to day life.
Find new friends.
All kidding aside, be patient. This way of eating works and it’s the only way to lose and not walk around hungry all the time.
Simply put, without carbs as fuel for your body, it will use fat. Dietary fat at first, but once you’re adapted (which means once you’re body knows how to use fat as fuel), it will draw on the fat from your body too.
Your friends are clearly not at all knowledgeable on this subject so best not to listen to them.
Why?
What are you trying to achieve with this way of eating?
Breaded chicken steak?
Richmond sausages?
Why so many carbs?
It’s a bit of a relaxed weekend tbh. Would often go with the bacon in place of those. However I have a family and I’m not rich so we have to buy food for everyone and I make my changes appropriate.
This is a massive change for me since in the past you could have added copious amounts of baked beans, bread, chocolate biscuits, bagels, sugary tea and coffee with loads of milk and about 4 pints of milk a day.
So to answer your question I’m hoping what I’m achieving is far lower carb intake than I have ever had in my 40 years, higher fats and moderate protein.
Not a bad start is it?
Surely this change would have a dramatic change in insulin response for me?. I would eat a have pack of chocolate digestive with a cup of coffee without even thinking about it. Daily I would probably have around 8 slices of bread and a couple of rolls??
