What is the most palatable way? For example, are there salt tablets that you don’t have to taste?
I’m putting salt in my water, but it is a bit yuk…
Whats a good "palatable" way of getting more Sodium?
Boost sodium levels by adding Sea salt (Not Table salt) to meals and a bone broth drink, and keep potassium and magnesium levels up by eating nuts and seeds, dark leafy greens, fish and shellfish.
I know this sounds weird, but I sprinkle a little bit of salt in my coffee (or I put 1/2 cup bone broth in it). With the ratio I put in there, all it does is bring out the flavor of my coffee… I have enough monk fruit sweetner/cinnamon/coconut cream/MCT powder to make it delicious and the salt just brings it out … some people have said they’ve tried it and don’t like it, but I do!!
Other than that just eating salty foods like bacon, etc, adding salt to meals, but I listen to my body. If it tastes bad, then it was too much salt. If it tastes like it needs more, I add more. I just listen to my body, I don’t measure or track.
I use a salt grinder, so I have extra coarse salt lying around. Sometimes I’ll just swallow a couple of crystals whole. I also had to re-train myself to liberally season my food; prior to keto my doctor had me on a low-salt diet and I had pretty much stopped using it.
If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, headaches, nausea, or constipation, it is likely that you need more salt. Otherwise, you are probably fine.
We emphasize watching your salt intake because (1) the kidneys excrete sodium more readily in the absence of carbohydrate and (2) the U.S. recommended daily amount of salt intake is dangerously and unhealthily low.
High sources of potassium: Eating leafy greens more often and non-fortified brewers yeast, non-fortified nutritional yeast and wheat grass powder all of this combined has more vitamins than any multi-vitamin you can buy including potassium (although I do mix all three together with other substances like freshly ground flax seeds and chia seeds and put it all in gel caps by hand).
Never needed more salt other than because I just like Himalayan sea salt or other sea salts and salt my food based on instinct and love Himalayan Sea Salt in my bulletproof coffee!
I love salt and always have used more salt than anyone I know since I was child, so I don’t eat salt because I have to, it is based on my natural cravings.
I just add plenty of salt to my food; or, there are plenty of different seasonings that contain salt as well. I use them all when seasoning my steaks.
When I was feeling really weak and lightheaded I started consuming 2 tsp of salt directly on my tongue, but didn’t really enjoy that. Not sure how big a role potassium and magnesium plays, but the crappy feeling I was having went away when I started supplementing with them.
Periodically throughout the day, I take 1/4 to 1/2 a tsp of large salt crystals (e.g. pink Himalayan crystals) and toss them back with a mouthful of water, like taking a pill. Easy to do, barely taste any saltiness at all.
thanks
what brand do you get, - do you get “coarse” grade or something a bit bigger?
This sounds gross, and it was at first for me, but I got used to it.
I actually eat 1 teaspoon of Pink Himalyan salt, a few times a day, and more often when fasting. I just put it on the teaspoon, into my mouth, and swallow a bunch of water to get it down.
A lot of people add it to meals, coffee, etc. though as well.
I add it to coffee. It’s less noticeable if you add it to bitter things. Chocolate is also a good place to hide extra salt.
Lately, I have been drinking hot buttered salt water in the mornings. It keeps me in a fat-fasted state, and it takes the edge off any hunger. I also struggle with salt. I can’t drink cold salt water and eating plain salt has made me nauseous on occasion.
I just noticed someone mentioned chocolate and salt - oh yeah, that’s one place I have no problem getting salt! Lily’s chocolate - one of the salty ones! I have to be careful though. Sometimes I get the Caramelized salted milk chocolate. The carbs are okay for an indulgence but it’s a test of my willpower. I have break it into small pieces and stash them in separate containers in the freezer.
No ‘brand’ (I buy it loose), just some coarse form of salt, whichever type you prefer and can access easily. Something vaguely like:
