WHAT to use my limited carb grams on?

grains

(Zu) #1

Hello - I am new here and very enthusiastic… (lol)

If I have only a limited amount of carbs to ingest per day - what are the best kinds of things to utilise those carbs on?

I have been using them on pineapple (digestion) and incidental in my dairy/fat… and so far I have completely shunned grains altogether… is incorporating some grains under my carb limit a good idea or should I just ride the the no grain wave for as long as I can?

I appreciate all your comments

I’ve found this generally leads to feeling like crap, and if I keep it up long enough, even in small amounts, eating like crap.

Other than that, for me it’s usually things like shallots or veggies.

the reason I ask is that the odd cracker or two is a lovely medium for copious amounts of fat… so far i haven’t done it, but its crossed my mind… but then how to stop and but on the breaks is the question.

Personally, I don’t think of carbs as a number I’m trying to hit, I think of carbs as a number I’m trying not to hit, or go over. The mindset of “what can I get away with doing that won’t hinder my progress too much” doesn’t seem like the healthiest way to go. I have done that before and it has always led to a slippery slope of eating more and more of the bad stuff.

Grains are absolutely not a necessary part of our diet. Low carb grains seems like an oxymoron to me.

Skip the grain, if you can avoid completely is even better. If you want more info read William Davis book or some videos on what he have to say about grain.

Eat organic vegetables. Avoid or limit high starchy vegetables. Add prebiotic foods like yam.

Part of going on a ketogenic diet is healing your gut, and significantly reducing grain can help with that.

(Zu) #6

sure, so essentially your saying just whatever incidental carbs are in the vegetables I consume should really be it? and possibly the dairy?

(Tim) #7

That’s how I try and handle it. Sometimes I make a conscious decision to ‘go off the rails’ for a while, but generally, avoid grains altogether.

(Jim Russell) #8

Yes, that’s correct. Some low carb berries are nice on occasion too. e.g. blueberries, blackberries, raspberries.

I already am very cautious of white potatoes… do they have a place in a keto lifestyle?
What about stuff like peas/corn/pumpkin/lentils/beans?

Im getting candida protocol flashbacks overhere

When you eat carb foods, you want it to have fiber, so you want to subtract the fiber grams from the total carb. I don’t really bother with this since I just eat healthy vegetables.

You can go for tubers that have less effect on blood sugar like yam and sometimes sweet potatoes in moderation.

Notice that whole grain have slightly higher glycemic value than sugar.

right-e-oh… So what about things like organic green stevia powder and monk fruit powder? Am I essentially priming my desire for carbs in this way?

(Zu) #12

hmmm I am macro-calculation-minded and use an app in AU called calorie king to calculate the carb/fat content of such things… has this already taken into account such fibre subtractions?

(Jim Russell) #13

There are a lot of threads about that on this forum. There seems to be a lot of individual variability on how they affect each person. The short answer seems to be “try it yourself and see how it works for you.”

(Zu) #14

Thanks for that

I think you shouldn’t stress so much with the calculation and spend more time looking at what is truly healthy foods, then you won’t have to worry so much about the minute details. I don’t count carbs because I just limit it as much as I can unless it’s fiber rich (non-grain) food. I also don’t stay on ketosis all the time, periodically I eat more healthy carbs.

Look, it’s like this, there are no essential carbohydrates needed for life. You’re body is fully capable of producing all of the glucose you need. The further you stay away from any form of sugar, grains, or starchy vegetables including yams & sweet potatoes, the better you will feel. Just eat leafy greens and other above ground veggies if you like, but don’t feel lie you have to to live.

(Sophie) #17

Agree with the above ^ I remember one of the Doctors (Phinney perhaps?) that said any veggie grown below ground is like a little sugar storage bomb. Goes for potatoes to radishes, so I do those in moderation.

I spend all my limited carbs on wine.:wine_glass::wine_glass::wine_glass:
