What to do when you know you are going to "cheat" for a day

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #41

A water fast is typically just water and some salt or electrolytes. Some people, probably most also add coffee or tea. Black only. Any food will break your fast in terms of autophagy but for weight loss some people depend on cream in their coffee or some such thing to make the fast easier.

The problem with artificial sweeteners is that they can cause an insulin response. It is best to avoid sweeteners especially on a fast.

If you are not fat adapted be careful after a carb heavy day of fasting the next day or two because you might suffer the ills of low blood sugar. Just pay attention to how you feel and if you don’t feel well eat. You can always wait a week and restart your fast.

Time is on your side. People can get impatient with any way of eating, or fasting but after 65 years I’m in life for the long haul.

Let us know how you deal with the carb heavy day and enjoy the reason for being there.

Have a good time man! Totally agree with the advice of paying very close attention to the effects of alcohol. It may be no issue at all. Or it could hit you like a ton of bricks if you’re not used to drinking on keto. It won’t be a great memory if you’re passed out in the corner.

Eat the lowest carb options you can within the parameters of having a good time. The lower you can keep the carbs without making a big deal about it, the better chance you have of feeling great though the whole event.
Have fun.

It doesn’t for me in a practical sense as far as my BG and ketones go. Technically so would water and coffee and some people will tell you that washing your hands will too. I’m really only interested in results.

If you have done strict keto for 2-8 weeks and are “Fat Adapted” your body should be more responsive and efficient when using Carbohydrate. If you combine Keto with Intermittent fasting you could be even more efficient. I use targeted keto and use carbs after my workout for an energy boost and to promote muscle protein synthesis (Muscle Growth) and i vary rarely step out of ketosis.

The key is to make the keto diet your own. Everyone is different and sometimes a delve into the dark side is all the motivation you need to reach your goals.

For me its about my health 1st and fitness 2nd. For you it might be something else. Do what feels right for you and like some of the members say, dont stress and enjoy the ride.

100% same here…

I go to things where Beer/wine are the main event and I pass on it all. I am a recovering alcoholic 32 yrs not going to blow it on any kind of a “party” Please know that even though you have been keto only a month, you will still react more to alcohol than before. Stay safe.

At first I got a big chuckle out of that. But before i took another breath, it hit me. There are indeed physiological effects from external stimuli like getting your hands wet! Every single time I do the dishes, I need to take a bio break. Every time. I might have just gone an hour ago, and technically still be good for a few more hours, but damn, if my bladder isnt telling me its time to dance. So i go, and it’s obviously maybe 1/4 full, yet the external stimulus MADE ME need to go.

Just like Pavlov’s dog, we train our bodies to expect certain things. I would think its possible for our bodies to expect a load of carbs after washing our hands. Seeing as we wash out hands before we eat, our bodies could be getting ready for a meal. Basically as kids we would rarely wash our hands, except for meal times where we were often forced to do so. I had four youngans myself, and i do remember the constant battle getting hands washed. I could see how a Pavlovian effect could arise in that.

I was actually being serious about washing your hands breaking a fast. I have read that some dry fasters consider that water absorbed through the skin with break a fast.

I would say to them, “Show me the science!” :sunglasses:
