What "keto" friendly food or gadgets are you wishing for this Christmas?

I know what you mean about boiling eggs! I’ve discovered that my Instant Pot does them perfectly, so that’s usually how I boil eggs these days. :grinning:

Ooooo… that sounds like a good idea. I don’t drink coffee, but am a tea drinker. I do like heavy whipping cream in my tea sometimes. I bet a nice Keto creamer would be lovely. Lots of luck on getting your creamers this Christmas!!

It depends on how you use the ketone meter, I think. Getting one as a gift would be nice.

Like some others on here, I do get curious about how certain foods might affect my ketone levels. If I got a meter, I would get one that did both, glucose and ketones. I’m pretty certain I would have been considered a diabetic if I had gone to the doctor before starting Keto. But I didn’t. Still, I would like to know how certain foods affect me. Just for personal knowledge. But because of the cost of the strips, I haven’t asked for one. Might do it for my birthday this spring, though. Not sure.

All thoughts are welcome!

I wondered this as well. :grinning:

I bought my original one from Sweden. It’s over the counter there. It was about $65/month at the time. My wife’s sister got it for me, as she lives there.

The second one, the doctor in the US ordered for me. I used it for two months or so. These have gone way up in price, though. The last time I checked, they were $150/month without insurance. Yikes!

Glucose is reasonable. Test 15 minutes, 30, 1 hour, 2 hours to see what happens. Here’s Thanksgiving, 2017:

Note the peak at 9.7 (=174.6, multiply by 18) is less than an hour (one hour between each two lines). That was “dinner”, which we ate around lunch. The next peak is dessert. Again, 1 hour, but I go down below my normal. The 8.2 at night is another “dinner”.

When I had pin prick meters, I was testing at 1-2 hours after eating. As you can see, from my CGM data, that was probably useless, as my blood sugar is back to normal in about 1 hour.

Supposedly, that’s not the case for T2 diabetics, though, so that’s why I recommend testing every 15 minutes or so in the beginning. Just be forewarned that if you eat low carb all day long, your line will basically be flat.

Ketones are a different story. They change relatively slowly, and I’ve done tons of test to see whether protein affects ketones. It does not appear to, or provides confusing results (sometimes, yes; sometimes, no). I was never able to figure it out.

Similarly, to the extent that fat cause higher ketones, it’s because (I think now) there is a bunch of extra “energy” the body can’t do anything with, and thus the higher ketones.

For my birthday my husband gave me an Instant Pot/Air Fryer combo, and I love it! It’s got a lot of uses, though I will admit, storing it is a challenge. We’ve already been using it quite a bit, though.

Thanks for this response! I have been Keto for over 2 years now, but I do wonder how my body responds to meat. I’m not worried about it, but just curious. It’s difficult to overeat meat or fat by too much. :grinning: A meter might have been more useful when I first transitioned to eating this way, but I am a curious person, so I always wonder.

I think you are correct about testing. Still, in the back of my mind I am curious how my body is responding to what I eat now. Most meals these days, I don’t bother with many veggies or carbs. But I do sometimes eat a large, fatty steak. I’m not curious enough to spend the money on a meter right now, though. They seem just too expensive for my budget, especially with the cost of the strips.

Sounds lovely! I didn’t realize they came in a combo. Storage is always an issue for me, even though I have a fairly good size kitchen. Not nearly as large as I see in most new homes now, but still pretty good storage and counter space.

We had to buy a new sous vide, as our previous one was basically broken. The case had to be removed, so you could see the propeller and the internal workings of the part in the water.

Something I could use is a simple mixer, something with a base. I know there’s nine zillion out there, but I’ve been making my weekly batch of ice cream using a hand mixer, and it’s less convenient than it should be. I have to put down the mixer to add ingredients when I could fold them in much easier if it could run without me holding it.

Which did you get? My Anova Nano is making some odd sounds and acting funny at times.

Can you take it apart? We had this one:

We also had sounds emanating from this one. We unscrewed the bottom and also took off the metal cover. The bottom just unscrews, and my wife took off the cover. So, we just had the metal heating element, thermometer, and propeller down in the water. We still have this, and it works, but the propeller is not protected, and we use with with a metal rack. We’re afraid something is going to hit the propeller.

I think this is the one we got, but I remember it being waaay cheaper on Black Friday:

As for the mixer, we actually bought a stand mixer last year during Black Friday, because we thought ours was going bad. It’s still in the box. Ours still works, though you have to use a strong rubber band to keep the lever that locks the head in place from moving, and allowing the head to move up and out of the bowl. My wife doesn’t allow me to move and I have to keep a hand on the mixer if I’m beating something in there that causes the mixer to shake.
