What "keto" friendly food or gadgets are you wishing for this Christmas?

As Christmas nears, I find myself wondering what I would like to receive. I’ve never chased ketones, but it has crossed my mind to ask for a meter just because I sometimes become curious. (It might be interesting to check after meals and see what happens and again in the mornings with my blood sugar.) One of those nifty ones that can check ketones as well as glucose. But I don’t need one.

Another idea might be monk fruit sweetening drops. I have started adding them to tea some days.

I don’t know. I’m not coming up with much that I want or need. I supposed that means I’m very fortunate. :grinning:

So… I thought I’d see what others are wishing for this Christmas. Anyone willing to share?

I’m going keto for a week or so, just to fit in more at xmas and new year party. I do this every year, Carnivore is my favourite woe, but its more social to go keto very low carb during the holidays.

I look forward to lobster and oysters.
Maybe some sugar free full fat ice cream

Since no one but our family will be here (we normally host Christmas, but no one will be coming this year), we might do lobster, crab legs, etc. Something we couldn’t afford to do for a large group, and can barely afford for us. Maybe a ham (we normally have someone who is kosher, so ham is out).

As for gifts, we already bought a Therma-Pen to replace our old one, which now comes on…sometimes.

When I drink tea at home (weekends, mainly), I’ve been drinking a “pumpkin spice” tea, which is good but doesn’t taste like spice. So, I’ve been adding sweetener my wife bought that has more pumpkin spice. I’m usually against sweeteners, but this actually takes the bitterness out of the tea and makes it taste better.

I just bought myself a new Deep Fryer for Christmas. Not bad, a 6L. 1800W stainless steel professional model available all over the internet for around $80. I found a seller on Ebay and got one for $42 plus free shipping.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

I’d love to try some Rebel Creamery ice cream.

#7

Ohhh… so would I! I’ve never tried Rebel Creamery ice cream.

Sounds good! I’m not Carnivore, since whenever I eat with my family (sons and husband) I eat something green as well, but any time I eat alone (if I eat lunch or no one else is home) I don’t bother with the low carb veggies.

Might as well treat yourself. I miss having a large gathering for the holidays. It’s just going to be my immediate family for Christmas, like it was for Thanksgiving. I had to look up Therma-pen as I had no idea what it was. Nice.

Wow, sounds like you got a good deal! Your post about a deep fryer jogged my memory. Not quite the same thing, but I have been thinking about getting an air fryer. I just don’t have a lot of storage space or counter space left for an extra gadget. :grinning:

Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). So, interested to see what different foods create in me.

(Bacon for the Win) #12

it is better than it should be. I wish it weren’t.

The Air Fryer concept is interesting. I considered getting one, but after some research it appears they are using the infrared heat and fan technique used by existing ovens like Nu-Wave, Jetstream, MagicChef, Sharper Image, etc. They have just been reconfigured and use a basket instead of racks. The cooking result is the same, except their capacity is much smaller. I was able to roast my 10lb. turkey in my MagicChef. It appears more to be a marketing ploy to call them a fryer. IMO the infrared convection oven configuration is much more versatile with the same results.

Last Christmas, my wife and I were researching air fryers and I came across a review online that said the best air fryer they ever found was a convection oven. They gave a model, and we ended up getting it. It’s a Cuisinart countertop convection oven and does great. I doubt it would do a 10lb turkey though.

Our turkey was smoked, though. Dry brined, spiced and spatchcocked, then into a Weber kettle grill for indirect smoking.

I just brined my turkey overnight. If I had been more ambitious I would have pulled out my Big Chief electric smoker and cold smoked it after brining before I roasted it. The Big Chief works great for cold smoking, all you have to do is suspend the rack on top instead of inside, using another rack or some wood pieces, then cover it with the box it came in. A large feed sack or a couple split and taped together works well too, you’re just holding the cool smoke around the food.

I used to have the Little Chief, back when I did more saltwater fishing, and learned to smoke king mackerel and lots of other fish with it. That was in late '70s/early '80s…

Now I have two Masterbuilt Electric Smokers (MES); an analog and a digital. The digital allows you to set a temperature more closely with a keypad on top and its thermostat keeps it close to that. The analog has a hand control like the electric skillets I grew up with around my parents’ house. It works well, but does require a bit more watching because the temperature wanders up during the day. Got the analog first then added the digital in hopes of being able to start something smoking in the early morning, or midnight, and let it cook low and slow until like 5 PM the next day.

The digital also has an optional side smoke generator that plugs into the side. Then you don’t need to run the heat in the smoker itself to generate the smoke. That allows cool smoke to soak into the food and you can refrigerate the chamber with some pans of ice to cold smoke cheeses or salmon or other things.

I got the Weber for grilling, and it turns out to be a decent smoker, too. I’ve made smoked chicken wings on it a few times, and really enjoy those.

Thank you both for this information. I really haven’t done the research. I greatly appreciate this information!

Hubby bought a sous vide last month and I would thoroughly recommend the investment. It was an early Christmas present. Now surfing through all the specialist cheese monger shops as I think that’s going to be our present to each other now.

All I want for Christmas is half a cow. And yes, Rebel ice cream is the bomb!

If only I had another full sized freezer! :grinning:
