What "keto" friendly food or gadgets are you wishing for this Christmas?

What’s the best ketone/glucose meter? Anyone have a recommendation?

(Ken) #22

I just got a second one., a Vintage International Harvester model last made in 1955.

You don’t need one. Buy a Cooker or Freezer instead.

I don’t do Christmas, but maybe I’ll treat myself to an Instant Pot Ultra 8 quart if it goes on sale. I can’t eat roasts, steaks, or chops cooked by regular methods, so it would be nice to sous vide some meat to a tender state.

#25

I love my Instant Pot; I can wholeheartedly recommend it, especially for cooking meat which falls apart.

Gym / exercise related things are on my radar for Christmas! My keto diet is going nicely, but I feel as though exercise is my missing link at the minute!

Some of the stuff I’ve been looking at though…

I cook every turkey “deconstructed” now. You separate the breast from the legs/thighs, taking out the backbone.

If you’re using the oven, this allows you to put the breast in for 30 minutes or so more, then add the legs/thighs, which means they are done at about the same time. You can also brine the breast and not brine the legs/thighs, though I might brine the thighs next year.

This also allows you to take out the thigh bone and truss, which means when you’re done cooking, you cut off the strings and slice the thigh into rounds. Like this, although this takes forever to get to the “meat” of the story:

Additionally, you get the backbone to make stock.

And, if you sous vide the turkey, you can sous vide at two different temperatures.

I haven’t cooked a “whole” turkey in quite a while. Years.

My sons gave me an Instant Pot last Christmas. I love it and use it most often for hard boiled eggs. Unfortunately, it is not really large enough. It is an 8 quart, but we eat a LOT of meat, and I generally like to have enough meat for two meals. Sometimes I will pre-cook stew beef in the Instant Pot, and add it to a much larger pot with extra broth, radishes (instead of potatoes), celery, onions, green beans, and sometimes a few carrots for my family to enjoy. Our sons are ages 16-21 at the moment, and still at home most of the year. Two are in college.

I generally make “freezer meals” with leftovers so they can grab something from the freezer for a quick meal.

My family is an Android family, not Apple. I do have a Fitbit that one my sons gave me, but it’s not a fancy one. I do like it, though. I would love a stationary bike, though. Good idea. Probably too expensive for my family, though. :disappointed:

I’ve just switched back to Apple actually after becoming an Android convert… now I’m completely Apple saturated! (Unlike my bank account as a result of this)

(Marianne) #31

I already have mine, but for those who don’t, I LOVE my egg steamer. In spite of googling how to hard boil eggs a million times, they rarely came out well until I got my steamer. Cheap gift, too. Game changer. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I am hoping that my kids will buy me some Keto coffee creamers; as I am currently all out and cannot logically justify spending the money on them, as we are on a tight budget. I have been putting MCT oil directly into a cup of coffee (and I get it down but don’t enjoy it).

I have told them that I would like this, so that is on my wish list =). “Fingers crossed”!

I have been on keto for over 4 years but am planning my yearly first of the year strict keto weight loss period to lose the 10 pounds or so I always pick up at the end of the year doing less strict / dirty keto. I have always thought a ketone monitor may help. Should I ask for one for Christmas?

(Bob M) #34

The results are basically meaningless. That is, high ketones don’t equate with a high rate of weight loss. This is speaking as someone with thousands of ketone readings, blood, breath, urine.

#35

research the bs meter you DO want LOL cause if left up to those who buy the gifts you might not get what you truly want LOL a suggestion to buy this one is the way to roll if that is what you want!!

Me…nothing. I hate gadgets. I am a true minimalist type and more crap around me the worse I get, less is so much more to me for my personality ya know

#36

I can relate. All I want for the Winter Holiday is ribeye. And Peace on Earth. :earth_africa:

(Bob M) #37

The one thing I WOULD recommend is a continuous glucose monitor, if you can get it for a reasonable price. I bought a year’s supply from Sweden, and I learned a ton. For instance, what does popcorn (homemade, butter, coconut oil, ghee, salt) do to your blood sugar? For me, nothing. Same with salsa (at least the amount I eat). What about “hot and sour” soup from the Asian restaurant (ostensibly, just soup with vegetables and shrimp, no rice or other carbs)? Caused my blood sugar to skyrocket.

I know this was a mishap in posting this to me…a zero carb person LOL
I know it was meant for the OP  Just a snafu on posting on this one

(Bob M) #39

Sorry, I didn’t necessarily mean you – I just meant in general.

For instance, at one time, everyone was convinced that protein = candy bar in terms of blood sugar, for low carb people. So, here’s a test I did where I ate about 162 grams of protein in a single meal, with basically no effect on blood sugar:

Now, this was after 36 hours of fasting with an early morning workout, but I could never find any effect on blood sugar due to protein. In fact, most times, I could not tell when I ate.

@ctviggen, did you need a doctors prescription for the CGM? also, gan you provide where you bought it from? Thanks in advance.
