What is wrong with me

(Frank) #1

I am an adult mail 52 413 lb, and lost I around 13 lb. I have been ketoing since this past Christmas day. Last week I started a 24 hour intermittent fast. I fasted Mon, Wed, and Frid. Surely, I thought I would loose some weight. Hoever, I ended up gaining 5 pounds. Talked about being shocked. I felt great all week. The days I fasted I had lots of energy. So I am pretty sure I am fat adapted. Does any one have some advice for a newby?

Hey Frank!

There is a newbie thread on the forum, you can check that out if you like.

13 Lbs loss is progress.
“Felt great all week” = YAY!

Weight can fluctuate daily, don’t be to hard on yourself!
Keep calm, Keto on is what you’ll hear here, it works, it takes time.
Have a great day!

Things to check:

Meal frequency: are you snacking at all? This will prevent your insulin from dropping sufficiently to release fat.

Food sensitivity: dairy causes problems & stalls for some folks. Whey protein in others.

Artificial sweeteners: some AS cause insulin spikes in some people, we are all different.

Protein: eating too much can stall weight loss in some people.

Alcohol: the liver will prioritize alchohol processing first & halt all weight loss until that is done.

Exercise: sometimes a too intense workout schedule stresses the body & prevents weight loss.

Sleep: not getting enough sleep will raise cortisol stress hormone which will make you stall.

Healing: sometimes there’s a lot going on inside unseen that the body needs to take care of before it decides fat loss is on the agenda.

If you feel great then you are on the right track! Sometimes all you need for the Keto lifestyle is patience. Welcome aboard & Keep Calm & Keto On

I suspect given your current weight that your fasting insulin is high. If your insulin is high, the body can’t access energy (fatty acids) from the fat cells. The insulin will block the access so a person can’t burn fat. Without doing a blood test, one way to know this is if you are hungry all the time. Really all a person can do is eat keto and get the insulin level down.

Frank,

Chances are, you’re fine. At your high weight, your body has a high degree of metabolic derangement, due to the detrimental adaptations your body is very good at conserving fat. Now, it doesn’t mean you haven’t been burning your fat, but your body may still be retaining the fat cell structures by filling them with water. Are you eating extra salt? If so, stop it, as after a month in you shouldn’t need it, so salt your food to taste now. If you go to OMAD and if you make sure you’re hungry by the time you eat things should go faster, but your loss will go in jumps rather than be linear, at least at first. Take pictures and measurements, you’ll want them in the future.

how do you know if you are in ketosis?

What are your macro percentages?

How much water are you consuming?

Are you moving around?

WOW, @LizinLowell , great checklist. Wish we could just pin it to the top of the Newbies area.

Also consider what meds you are on. If you haven’t had a check up in awhile, but t ake daily meds, you should schedule a med review. BTW many pharmacists are also quite knowledgeable and might have some suggestions too, if meds are an issue.

5-7% net carbs 65-70% fat and 30-40% protein on 1800 to 2200 cal

thanks

Thats probably too much protein, people who are very insulin resistant tend to convert excess protein to fat very quickly

(Frank) #14

maybe too much protein. I calculate my lean body mass ia around 210-230 so I eat about 150 grams average of protein per day

#15

As others have mentioned, increase fat and reduce protein.

thanks
